Interesting Kickstarter Catch-All

Well, shoot. I totally forgot to post here before the campaign ended, but did anyone back Return to Dark Tower? My parents used to play Dark Tower all the time when I was young so it was a no-brainer to pledge at the $225 level. The number of stretch goals and how much you get included with the game seemed pretty awesome.

Now to sit and wait patiently for a year and hope it doesn't get delayed.

I have fond memories playing it with my great aunt as a kid. I have been watching it, but just couldn't justify it as i a) don't have anyone to play it with and b) going to Hawaii soon so no extra funds.

It was incredibly expensive and the campaign overlapped with Oath, which I did back. I'm a sucker for exclusive upgrades and such, but I didn't feel like I had a way to be reasonably certain I'd enjoy the game. By contrast, Oath was $90 plus shipping, had tons of third-party playthrough videos, a print and play, and a Tabletop Simulator mod.

I really hate the "you can only get the best version this once" model that KS encourages. The FOMO works, I know, but there have been tons of succesful games that have no KS exclusives (Gloomhaven, Oath just raised $1 million, etc.).

All that said if I look deeper at The Dark Tower I'll probably start second-guessing my lack of support because it looks sexy and the theme really appeals to me.

The team behind Star Traders: Frontiers have launched a Kickstarter for their next project, Cyber Knights. It's a cyberpunk-themed turn-based squad tactics RPG.

Really tempted to back this. $20CAD is not going to break the bank but this would be the one project I've considered that I'm not 100% sold on.

I originally though you were talking about spending $225 on this:

I backed off Return to Dark Tower since it is really Dark Dice Tower and relies on players staring at an app instead of the tower. App-enabled games are great, but not when they’re supposed to be about a cool tower.

Ended up backing Cyber Knights. It's under $20 CAD and what they are pitching is extremely intriguing to me. From what they've shown and detailed, sounds like they are already decently far long. I still don't see how they can hit a 2021 release date but am more than happy to wait.

It's likely 90% done already. It looks like they're mostly doing the KS so they can have extensive playtesting done. This is how they've done things in the past since they're only a two person team (plus contractors? or have they grown?).

Ah good to know. The kickstarter FAQ says the alpha will be available by the end of 2020. Still seems like a tight timeline. Some people here and in the Steam reviews had really positive things to say about Star Traders: Frontiers. Sounds like it's still the duo and contractors.

Trese Bros are machines. They regularly update even their older stuff and spit out massive content updates for their newer titles. I would have no worries about them hitting their dates, based on their history at least.

What do folks think of Rocketmen by Martin Wallace? There’s one day left and I haven’t really gotten a good feel for it yet to decide. I haven’t played any (?) of his games but know his is a name that gets pulled often on the conference call.

Probably too late for feedback now, but I chose not to back because it seemed pretty light and the press-your-luck element wouldn't fly with my game group. I've only played a couple of Wallace's games, but have liked them (London, A Study in Emerald (2e), Railways of the World). Playing Brass: Lancashire tomorrow night, actually.

KS exclusives are cosmetic only. I'll wait and see how reviews fall out and pick it up retail for a significant savings if it's good.

I'm pretty much finished with board game Kickstarter campaigns unless the "exclusive" is something that impacts gameplay and won't be available later, or there are no plans for a retail release. Otherwise I'm paying a premium to get it a bit earlier, and I have plenty of games to enjoy as it is.

Kickstarter has successfully unionized

Edit: Bonus joke because I can't resist...

How can you tell the difference between a Chemist and a Plumber?
Ask them to pronounce unionized...

The Chaosmos expansion campaign has entered its final 48 hours.

I'd never heard of this board game before, but it's reputation is that it's completely unique and high on player interaction. After reading some reviews and watching some videos, I backed it to the hilt.

Kindred Fates (the Pokemon-esque kickstarter) has 7 days to go and only 2 more stretch goals to unlock. It's unlocked the "Will be on the Switch" goal as well, so if you're interested, there's plenty of content!

Kindred Fates looks awfully good. I haven't put more than a few hours into any pokemon game either.
On the other hand it's an expected launch of 2023, which is a long time to wait for a game in a genre I'm only sort of interested in.

That's a real tough kickstarter considering Temtem is in early access right now.

nvm

nvm - the 'quote is not edit' edition

Hmmmm...backing that MakeWay thing for the kids at today’s Early Bird 50% off price and will decide whether to cancel during the remaining two months of the campaign.

LANDER

A competitive, space-themed strategy board game for 2-4 players. Manage resources and develop your crew to complete the most missions.

My local game store was chosen as a test store for this game and I thoroughly enjoyed the times that I was able to play it. Though the Kickstarter version is a little aesthetically different, all of the changes I can see are definitely superior. They haven't hit their goal yet, but there is still plenty of time to get there.

Other Kickstarters I'm backing:

  • Wonderland's War This one gives me Quacks of Quedlinburg vibes, but with different things to keep track of and more player interaction.
  • The Infinidungeon. 100 feet of reusable scrolling dungeons! I backed their first campaign (Immersive Battle Maps) and both myself and my players have really enjoyed the big-ol-book since it arrived. I think that these scrolls are a really cool idea for DM'ing a one-shot designed around them. Or just to actually keep things hidden from my players until I want to reveal them. I want two.

Kickstarters I currently have my eye on, but don't know if I'll have the funding to participate [In the order of "Ending First"]:

OMG you guys, a new edition of the Fading Suns pen and paper RPG!

The Kickstarter for Frosthaven, the sequel to the wildly popular Gloomhaven boardgame, has launched today. It has impressively raised $2.5M as of this posting.

I still haven't been able to get a game of the first one going... time and people are in short supply.

I'm very interested in trying either of these on Tabletop Simulator.

The Frosthaven KS campaign mentions a solo player daily puzzle (for each day off the campaign anyway) that is run on TTS if you're interested in seeing if the game is for you.

Oh, Gods... I'll never get it to the table, but I loved the setting...
