Fake headline, but I won't blame the writer. Many/most headlines are written by editors.

The Astro player and fan meltdowns this season are going to be epic. It's like they think they got away with it, so now we have to like them. I mean, there is a lot of that going around today.

Did you watch the whole video? This guy is either engaging in parody or literally has severe mental health issues. Not a good example to use, either way.

Guess there isn’t a 2020 thread yet?

Just had one opinion I had to voice: I find it borderline offensive that every morning ESPN airs KBO baseball and does nothing but speculate over MLB’s bullsh*t for 3/4 of the runtime. If you’re gonna air the sport, provide some actual commentary. Save the speculation for a talk show.

The answer is to stop watching ESPN!

Outside of specific live events I want to watch, I don't watch or mute things I am only casually interested in. I took that approach a couple years ago and haven't regretted it one bit. It has become not much better than the TV equivalent of current day Sports Illustrated or Newsweek, websites that carry the name of formerly reputable publications and not much else.

Is there going to be a 2020 season?

Apparently Manfred and Clark had a “productive” in-person meeting today. I wouldn’t be shocked if there’s a decent portion of owners who don’t want a season (for various reasons) and the comprise among themselves is to delay to get the shortest possible season. At this point MLB is the furthest behind in any of their planning to even begin.

Edit: Now being reported that a deal is in the works. Will feature prorated pay for players and include expanded playoffs. This is from Jon Heyman.

Edit 2: Jeff Passan reports that MLB has sent a new proposal to the MLBPA.

Would we even call what they're proposing for 2020 a "season", at this point?

I really prefer if they just scrap the entire idea of a season and do a world-cup style tournament or something like that. Get creative. They can always return to the standard season when/if things calm down.

Details of the proposal:

•60 games in 70 days
•Season starting July 19th/20th
•Full Prorated Salary
•Expanded Playoffs in 2020 and 2021
•Waiving of any potential grievance
-MLBPA may counter with a 65 game season

Unless the potential grievance waiver is a major issue, I don't see why a deal can't be reached in the next day or so. MLB took a major PR hit over the weekend.

Manfred is really awful at PR.

I'd say at this point Clark needs to be careful lest the public catches on that he's just as incompetent as Manfred. Clark just has the players on social media to sway public opinion. If they flat out reject this latest proposal or even respond back with something the owners are never going to take like 75 games full pro-rata that goes beyond the Sep 27 date (especially now that Fauci has come out and said he doesn't think they should be playing into October), public opinion could sway back away from MLBPA.

Well, at this point Clark is just a figurehead. They have someone else doing the negotiations and Clark is the representative of that. He was so ineffective that it's bizarre he hadn't been replaced yet. Public opinion will completely turn against the players if they can't get a deal done shortly.

Of the major league sports commissioners (and I have a massive blindspot for MLS despite it being huge), Manfred is the worst at PR. At a time when the MLB is generally struggling and with a bunch of different problems (perceived and real) instead of convincing the owners that there are things they need to change and modernize, he just parrots their wishes.

MLBPA counters with 70 game proposal. We'll see on the proposed timeline of those games but hopefully they will just meet in the middle at 65 and be done with it.

I saw some math that showed 66 games as the ideal middle-ground for both.

Details from Jeff Passan:
Among the details in MLBPA’s new proposal, sources tell ESPN:

- 70-game season from July 19-Sept. 30
- $50M in playoff bonuses
- 50/50 split of new postseason TV revenues in 2021
- Forgiveness of salary advance for Tier I-III players
- Universal DH
- Mutual waiver of grievance

It won't get accepted but the gap is so small if something isn't worked out both sides will severely damage the MLB.

Never mind, no one can be trusted to do this right. 5 Phillie players and 3 staffers have tested positive and their families have also got it. Blue Jays shut down their facility because 1 pitcher, who's on the 40 man roster, and recently spent time with Phillie minor leaguers, started feeling symptoms. The Blue Jays and Phillies facilities are 6 miles apart.

"Test regularly". Omg, I'll have my kid's daycare show MLB how it's done.

Started a thread for Sports Pandemic talk.

We have discussions that encompass this in several threads, but this isn’t so much to end those, as each sport has its own set of challenges. But often, the topic becomes general, and we begin mixing sports in ways that aren’t useful. At the very least, for those of us that look at threads for multiple sports, it can sometimes make it hard to not go off topic, and an off topic that is already destined for Cleveland.

So this is pretty cool:

Put me in Coach, I'm ready to play.
