Random non sequitur posts catch-all thread

After seeing a few articles today, remembered that 25 years ago, people were excoriating Green Day for being punk rock sellouts. And now they're the mainstream elders.

I heard an interview with the commissioner of the new XFL on NPR today, and I was impressed that he managed to flub every single question. He blew questions about player safety, ethical recruitment, race, and player expression. Even the interviewer seemed annoyed. I walked away from the interview wondering why they're even bothering to have a league. It sounds like the sales pitch is that everything is worse than the NFL but at least the tickets are cheap.

DING DING DING!

Sure, but if you want cheap, faster football that doesn't care about long-term injury, is bad about race, and exploits its players, then college football is still right there. What does the XFL have to offer, exactly?

As someone who is only vaguely aware of the existence of American Football, what exactly is the issue regarding race? It can't be representation, as the few games I've watched seem to show the teams being almost entirely non-caucasian, with the possible exception of the quarterback and the kicker. Is there another issue?

It is representation, but it's not about raw numbers. Most players in the NFL are black, but team owners are almost all white, coaches are almost all white, and leadership roles on the team (especially the quarterback) are mostly white. Despite being a mostly black league, positions of power, authority, and respect have doggedly remained in the hands of white men.

And that's before you get into the whole issue of Colin Kapernick, police brutality, right-wing media, and Donald Trump.

Firefox recommended an article to me today titled "How to Write an Email With Military Precision" and I started braying with laughter, because if there's anything I've learned from friends and family who served, and other veterans I've seen on the internet talking about what being enlisted is like, "writing an email with military precision" is in no way an improvement.

I would very much like to see The Lord of the Rings films with the soundtrack completely redone by Led Zeppelin.

I ain't tellin' no lie
Mine's a tale that can't be told
My freedom I hold dear
How years ago in days of old
When magic filled the air
‘Twas in the darkest depths of Mordor
I met a girl so fair
But Gollum, and the evil one
Crept up and slipped away with her

The pain of war cannot exceed the woe of aftermath,
The drums will shake the castle wall,
The ring wraiths ride in black, ride on.

Sing as you raise your bow,
Shoot straighter than before.
No comfort has the fire at night
That lights the face so cold.

Oh dance in the dark of night,
Sing to the morning light.
The magic runes are writ in gold to bring the balance back.
Bring it back.

At last the sun is shining,
The clouds of blue roll by,
With flames from the dragon of darkness,
The sunlight blinds his eyes.

Maybe it could be a two hour super-cut of selected scenes and the music could be Led Zeppelin songs that have been remixed, remastered, as well as orchestral arrangements of Zep songs, and they could do that cool thing where a rock three piece (electric guitar, bass, drums) joins an orchestra for some reimaginings of Zep songs. Oh and maybe have some doom metal bands doing instrumental covers of Zep songs. OK. MAKE IT HAPPEN!!

I just watched the last 30 minutes of the Aquaman movie. Suddenly I’m craving steamed crab legs with lemon and drawn butter. And ham. Shaped like a fist.

I met someone at the dog show. She was holding my left arm, but everyone was acting normal, so I tried to look nonchalant.

Finally watched Avengers: Endgame, and if nothing else, they deserve credit for sticking the landing, something we've seen so many different pieces of media trying to keep far fewer plates spinning fail at.

I was so relieved that they did it. I know people have criticisms but it was pitch perfect for me. Nice to have that run of movies wrapped up and know it doesn't jump the tracks at the end.

There are movies I enjoy so much I want to watch them many times more then there are movies like endgame I enjoy on a level where I am completely content with the experience and would be happy to never see it again.

Avengers has to be the best miniseries ever produced in movie form.

Why? Why did they send her?

Over anyone else? How should I react? These things happen to other people.

We both said, “I really love you.”
The Shriners lent us cars
We drove up and down the sidewalk
fifty-hundred-million times

I do believe it's time for my bi-annual attempt to actually f**king finish Baldur's Gate II.

It's genuinely been one of my favorite games of all time since it's release, and I've never finished it.

I'm doing that now, but for kingmaker.

Since a tomato is a fruit, tomato sauce is just a kind of jam. So it should be acceptable to put other kinds of jams and jellies on pasta like spaghetti or ravioli or maybe even pizza.

I say it is, you just have to get the other ingredients right so the flavors work together. Maybe peanut butter stuffed ravioli in a jam/jelly "sauce"?

It's arguing semantics. Biology defines fruits according to criteria like reproductive function, not culinary criteria, right?

If you want to put 'fruit' jelly on a pizza, you can, that's why they're both called pies, I guess. You can pour your banana smoothie into a deep dish crust and call it pizza. It's a free country.

double edit: oops, the pumpkin isn't actually the sauce, so pumpkin ravioli wouldn't count.

I have a friend who owns a few pizza restaurants. He did "dessert pizzas" for a while that were exactly along those lines.

I mean, pizza is just an Italian sandwich, so I say go hog nuts and have you a PB&J pizza.

Mmm.. peanut butter and puttanesca sandwich

Rather than semantics, I think it comes down to context. In the context of scientific botany it’s a fruit. In the context of casual conversation it’s a vegetable. *pushes nerdy glasses back into place*

are there other kinds of botany? I need to know!
