Firefly - Love it!

sh*t, it was on Netflix about a year ago. I was pissed when it left.

It's on Hulu now. $13 on Amazon, Google Play, or iTunes.

How in this day and age have we not resurrected this yet?! Still annoys me.

It's just on the other side of too long ago now. Plus, the movie didn't really make things easy to make a season 2.

my fault for making that statement thinking you could read my thoughts. I agree. Mostly it sucks that this has such a huge following and faces one of the largest piles of legal, copyright, and to add story issues they need to overcome. Sigh...I think someone nailed it a few pages back, why do I get my hopes up and ever come back to this thread?

It will never happen because no one is this lucky, but Fox is “wide open” to bringing back Firefly.

I watched a youtube video somewhere dealing with shows that were cancelled too early that made an interesting observation. They looked into public records and spoke to representatives while doing research for the piece and found that there is a high turnover rate in the television executive positions. Now, it's not like Burger King's turnover, but most of these positions have a 2-3 year cycle of "get hired to improve ratings --> fix problems left by predecessors --> make a series of bad decisions --> secure a new job at a different station before being fired." Basically it asserted that while there are definite fixtures at certain stations that manage to stay for decades and become synonymous with the company they are at, most of the time the people that canned the show you love have moved shortly after they canned it. Hating on Fox for cancelling Firefly now would be like screaming at toddlers for the crimes of their great grandparents.

Problem is they killed one of the best characters in the movie and a new series would mean more Adam Baldwin which I'd rather avoid.

Yeah, either reboot it, or introduce a new conflict and set of characters. Either way avoid the baggage of the original.

Prequel series would have Wash back in the driver's seat, and be set before Jayne joins the crew?

They're all very old looking now though. lol

My wish:
Retcon the movie, never happened.

Wash, Zoe, Mal, Kaylee, Book return, new crew for the rest. (not recasts, new crew, new stories)

I fear that this could only be disappointing.

Yeah, that was what I found when I googled Adam Baldwin to prompt my memory on Jayne's name.

It'll never happen guys. As much as I'd love it to, it'll never happen.

Not with that cast but Star Trek came back and became bigger/better by expanding the universe beyond Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise.

Perhaps something like that could work.

Agreed. At best, we'll get a spinoff set in the same universe, but that specific show is likely done.

Hell, they could pick it up with Wash & Zoe's kid, all grown up. Maybe get cameos from Uncle Mal and whatnot but yeah, it would need to be something entirely new.

Animated series is the only chance for original cast. Otherwise, yeah spinoff time.

This is where I'd go with it. River would still be around, etc.

Tough to compete with The Expanse, though.

As much as I'd love to see the show revived, I can't see it happening in a way that would make the fans happy. Too many characters are dead, and the big bad story (government experimentation => the reavers etc) has been concluded (even if it had to be rushed for the movie).

I don't like the idea of a spin-off, or a story about their children. I felt that the original had the perfect chaotic combination of amazing characters, and actors to go with them. I don't think that lightning could strike twice to repeat that.

I would like to see more of River's story told though. And I, myself, am a fan of Jayne.

Sigh, yeah, one of the reasons Firefly is so beloved, really, is because it didn't have time to get a sucky season, like either Buffy or Angel.

Flag on the play! Season 1 of Buffy is the least great.

S6, sir. Unequivocally.

Rewatch all of season 1. I dare you. No "Once More with Feeling" to keep you going in Season 1.

I've watched Buffy multiple times. Season 6 is a far bigger disappointment than season 1. You usually expect first seasons to be wobbly.

Sure I've told people to watch Welcome to the Hellmouth/Harvest, Angel, and Prophecy Girl to just quickly get up to speed before. But that was back when the show was airing, and those were definitely the 3 key mythology and best episodes of season 1. But honestly, aside from I Robot You Jane, they're all solid.

S2 is the best season and it still has more stinkers than that (Go Fish, and Bad Eggs in particular).

And no I'm not looking up those episode titles, I damn well still remember them all.

Yeah I loved Jayne. Sucks Adam is a toolbag.

Part of me would love to see this alive again part of me is ready to let it die.

Firefly also has a number of comics and a unofficial audio play that is really good.

How can your subjective opinions be so wrong? Season 3 is the best. Most cohesive team dynamic, best main villain, some of the best episodes of the series - Helpless, The Zeppo, Lovers' Walk, The Wish, Dopplegangland (I didn't look them up either ). On subsequent rewatches, I figured out that the reason I think a lot of people bounced off season 6 as a whole is that it lacks what it has always had before, a solid big bad to hate. There's no mayor or vampire or god to defeat. The main villains of season 6 are depression, drug use (magic), grief, and toxic masculinity (I'm looking at you Warren). How do you stake those? I think it was a brave decision and I think they are handled well.

PS Yeah, Adam Baldwin would be problematic and Morena Baccarin is probably too big to return. Plus, having read up on where they were probably gonna take her character, I don't think I want to watch it happen.

PSS I love debating Buffy!

Yeah, seasons 3 and 5 are my personal faves, mostly for the Mayor and Glory. Season 5 also has The Body which is one of my favorite episodes of anything.

Agree on the Body. Wow. And proof that background music telling you how to feel is highly overrated.

The whole magic as drug analogy is the problem with season 6. Power corrupting would have been the right path but harder for them to redeem. They already had touched on it with Giles and his past mistakes. Really a weak choice and the story suffered for it. And of course the horrific use of Bury Your Gays trope. Be better, Joss.

Also we do have a Buffy thread around here somewhere. I started it a while back for a Netflix rewatch before it left to go to Hulu.

Edit: Here
