...and that's ok!

I am starting to look at my pile more seriously now so I am ready for the 2020 thread. I have fallen off the wagon over the last few months so I am looking forward to putting my goals on (virtual) paper.

I don't think I'll knock any more games off the backlog before the end of the year, but I've got my 2020 spreadsheet ready to go!

I'll not be getting to Death Stranding this year after all, and have relaxed my pace a bit in beating Crystar. Even so, Bloodstained should be defeated within the week, which means my final addition to the pile shall be Pokemon I think.

I like having a more relaxed attitude about some of this stuff.

I'm hoping to wrap up a few smaller games before the year ends. Pile progress suffered because of some big, chunky, very awesome games this year, but I'm totally a-ok with that. What a ride. <3

I'm actually able to have some time off around Christmas for the first time ever, so I might actually get another game finished, but I'm ready to re-organize and press that Reset button on the goals. I believe I'll be moving next year, so a lot of my gaming stuff will have to be boxed up.

December report:

Added:

  • Walden, a game (Steam) - Mostly out of curiosity. It seems pretty relaxing, so I might end up playing more than I thought I would.
  • FFXII The Zodiac Age (Steam) - I don't really count this one, as I've already beaten FF XII three or four times before (including the International Zodiac Job System edition)
  • Return of the Obra Dinn (Steam)

Finished:

  • Dragon's Crown (Vita) - Well, not really, but I'm at the final boss, and I plan to finish it before January 1st.

Dropped:

  • Wild ARMs 2 (PS1) - That localization ruins a game that is not very good to begin with.

Played:

  • Monster Hunter World Iceborne (PS4) - Getting close to the end of the story on that one. One or two more MHW Mondays should get me there. (because apparently I suck on my own)

But... But... it's only/already the 27th?!? /O_O\

That really snuck up on me, here I was I thinking I had plenty of time for my goty list, finish Xenoblade 2 etc..

*panic*

Well the last big hooray for me is to finish Trails in Cold Steel 2 on the Vita. I'm so close.

So, who wanted a new thread for the coming year?

I did! I did! I have Sunday all to myself, as well as the evenings of the 29th, 30th and 31st, so I plan to wrap up at least one or two games till the clock strikes 2020. I'll do my pile report in a few days and then I'll be ready for 2020!

Well, I suppose I'll be drawing a line at Christmas as I do for the GotY awards when it comes to the annual tally. I started to organize the data more thoroughly last year, and have decided to continue this trend again. So let's do a comparison. Games in bold are those that I beat.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
The Legend of Zelda
The Legend of Zelda: Adventure of Link
Castle Crashers

Games Played: 16
Games Beaten: 5

Last year's numbers in these categories were 15/11, 14/5, and 15/6. This year I played 39 games total, completing 21 total. The overall completion percentage is better as I finished more than half of the games I played this year.

If we remove repeats, then I played 29 new to me games in 2018 and finished 16. In 2019, I played ...well, that's where you can see my system getting fuzzy, but for current numbers we'll list 23 new to me games and finished 16. In those two categories, my numbers saw an improvement.

However, if we dig into how I tally things, we can probably get far better completion percentages for 2019.

Spoiler:

Destiny is never a game I'm going to complete, and while I listed Shadowkeep as "new" for 2019, you can easily argue it doesn't count. As such, you can adjust 2019 games as 14 total and 12 completions, 6/7ths, or 85.7%. If we remove Destiny from 2018's list, the numbers change to 14 total played, but only 10 completions since I, for some reason, marked it as complete (I guess because I completed story missions? I dunno. This year my feeling is "if the Raid hasn't been conquered then it hasn't been beaten" so...). That means 2018 was 5/7ths, or 71.4%. In 2019, I did a better job of purchasing and completing games that were new to me, and were it not for the Xbox I was gifted for Christmas I may have even managed to finish Crystar within the year (and therefore I wouldn't be using Christmas as the cut-off, but whatever).

Regardless, just as we removed Destiny, we can also go ahead and remove Super Smash Bros. Ultimate from the "Games of Prior Year" because, for starters, Smash wasn't new to me so I shouldn't have placed it but whatever. If we remove that, then we're now looking at 4/7 games from yesteryear but new to me beaten. That makes for a completion percentage of 57.1%, which is better than 2018's 5/14, or 35.7% completion.

2018's total completion would therefore be 53.6%, with 2019's at 85.7%. So, if you calculate exclusively games that were new to me in 2019 regardless of release year, the total percentage of completions is increased significantly.

I consider that a huge success, though I also played more new-to-me games last year. What that tells me is that, in 2019, I was a bit pickier with what I played, but also less prone to dropping that which I chose. Which largely fits with my goals.

However, there are lies, there are damn lies, and then there are statistics. Star Wars: Jedi: Fallen Order and Control in particular are two games I enjoyed enough to complete, but I would not be surprised if I would have preferred my money and time being spent on Daemon x Machina, or Dragon Quest XI S, or, surprisingly, Death Stranding, after having watched my friend play through a mission and some cut-scenes.

I also failed to revisit as many games I loved in the past, and my plans for games I'd be making videos of for the YouTube channel changed drastically. That, however, is a whole other topic I'll not bore you with.

Overall I'd say 2019 was a success, as I certainly played games more this year than I had in the past and engaged less with anime and film than recent memory. However, though I never bought a game I wasn't in some way fired up for, Sekiro (which I sold my copy to Harpo after abandoning), Control, and Star Wars: Jedi: Fallen Order feel inadequate compared to some of the titles I left for later purchase.

I'll do a proper December report by the 31st.

Last one for the year, don't think I will finish anything else sooooo here we go!

Added:
Headmaster (PS VR)
Skyworld (PS VR)
Yakuza 6 (PS4)

Finished:
Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Forza Horizon 4

Totally Accurate Battle Simulator

Well at the start of December "building a new computer" thing happened so I've been feasting on all the Gamepass goodness. Finally was able to power through to the end of Xenoblade, it makes me mad how good that game could have been if they did couple things different. Discovered Operencia, this game is an excellent take on the old school dungeon crawler. Basically been loving gaming this month.

Year end report time!

At the start of the year, I had 23 games on my backlog. On December 29, I'm down to 11. It was definitely a mix of playing games and simply removing those from the list which I either was no longer going to play, or, due to receiving for free from various services, decided they no longer counted. The latter is due to the fact that I didn't want free games to perversely create anxiety for myself when looking at my stack of games to complete.

Overall I completed 29 games this year. Four of those were replays. The rest were a mix of new games and backlog titles. I did a pretty good job this year of only buying something when I intended to play it. There were some exceptions, of course, and they'll carry over into 2020's pile.

Final Fantasy VII Remake and The Last of Us II will probably be the first two day one purchases I make next year. I'm also all set to pick up a PlayStation 5 when it comes out, I'll likely pick out one or two titles to go along with that. Other than that we'll see what catches my eye in the new year on top of the other titles from the last few years that I still want to get around to playing.

I've tried Witcher 3 again as it's the CRPG club pick and this time I've just made it beyond the 1 hour mark, so will see how far I get. I think I'm a bit more receptive to it this time round.

*aside from Tacoma I don't think have played another game through to completion this year. My video gaming time has dropped right off to maybe 5-10 hours a month, there might even have been a month or two when video games barely got a look in a t all. It is picking up again a bit now and have very loose plans for 2020 gaming. Will be heading over to the next years thread soon!

I don't think that I'm going to finish or buy anything so final December report:

Added:
Days Gone

Finished:
Trine 4

Played:
A Hat in Time
Warframe (co-op with eldest son)

2019 has been a rough year for me personally, professionally and in the gaming space. Looking back at my goals for the year, I did okay.

1. Similar to several others, if I buy it in 2019, play it in 2019.

I purchased ten games this year and played or finished seven of them. The other three have been purchased since Black Friday so I think that I'm still within an acceptable window since purchase.

2. Keep a close eye on those digital purchases. They might be cheap but they add up.

Five of the ten purchases were digital--not bad.

3. Remind myself: if I am not having fun or lost interest in game, it's okay to toss it from the pile

I didn't abandon many games but it did happen. Good thing to remember.

4. Do something about that unopened 3DS still gathering dust. Maybe just set the Vita down for a couple months, plow through the three games owned and get rid of the system unless my kids suddenly find it interesting.

Yeah, still gathering dust. My youngest children tried playing with my old DS and had little interest so I doubt if the 3DS would get much more use from them. I'm still planning on playing these games. Maybe 2020?

5. At least TRY a western RPG. Witcher 3 is still in the shrink wrap from holiday 2016 purchase.

Still in the shrink wrap.

6. Keep gaming balanced against 60 book reading goal for 2019.

I finished 65 books this year so I guess everything balances out.

Whelp, final night of 2019 and I still got some other stuff to do before departing for MAGFest tomorrow, so not about to beat anything tonight. Even so, December was, uh... it was pretty packed.

GAMES COMPLETED:

  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses
  • Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
  • Gears of War: Ultimate Edition

GAMES PLAYED:

  • Crystar
  • Castle Crashers
  • Destiny 2: Shadowkeep
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Pokemon Shield
  • The Witcher 3
  • Gears of War 2
  • Halo 5

SHORT AND SWEET:

I'm glad I said I wouldn't buy Pokemon or Death Stranding until I beat select games on Switch and PS4, because I'd otherwise have another unplayed game lingering on the pile.

THE OVERWROUGHT NAVEL-GAZING:

Spoiler:

December was the first time in a long time that working on my YouTube channel stopped being fun. As I commented in my November report, I had chosen to deviate from my original plan to do a video on Darksiders because it would require footage from Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess if I were to make my best analysis and comparisons. I then decided "Whatever, I'll do a quick and dirty comparison between Link's Awakening and A Link to the Past to discuss why I believe replaying games is valuable". Thankfully, I had garion333 read the script. His honest and thorough feedback made me realize how lame the video would be, and so I scrapped that idea. But it turned into a lot of hair pulling and groaning and banging at a script trying to figure out how I can talk about A Link to the Past.

Because, if I'm honest, I don't actually love the game anymore. I still remember hearing Blind_Evil comment on it negatively for that first time he ever played it. It was a splash of cold water to a dreary face, after years of reflexively saying "No, A Link to the Past is great, you're wrong and Ocarina of Time is over-rated". I went back and replayed it about five or six years ago, but this time... this time I just did not enjoy it as much. I don't know what changed between then and now, but it made not only replaying the game less enjoyable, but trying to figure out how to write about it when I was feeling so negative towards it was... a trial. Fortunately, I found a positive hook, but it meant only three videos in 2019 when I thought I could put something together in time for the year's end.

It was the opposite of Final Fantasy VI this time last year, which helped revitalize my love of making the videos. Yeah, it wasn't as perfect as my memory held it, but I still had a blast playing the game and dissecting it to the best of my abilities. This carried over into Final Fantasy IX, and was carrying over into Darksiders until I decided to delay that.

Fortunately, I now have an angle to approach future Legend of Zelda games, but I'm now feeling a bit pressured. I "started" a series on Final Fantasy, and I'd like to begin Final Fantasy VII soon so I can then have a video out by March. This means the rest of my year after that is likely Legend of Zelda and that exclusively. At least, that's the pressure I put on myself.

In the 2020 pile thread, others are contemplating how to deal with the pile and enjoy the hobby still. One attempt to make a quick video by revisiting an old title instead sucked all the wind out of my sails (something something Wind Waker reference). I can only hope I'll feel revitalized going into Final Fantasy VII.

I say this, because replaying old games really does help me enjoy this hobby more, and by revisiting them in groups it sometimes gives me new perspective. Playing A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds simultaneously really helped contextualize where the latter improved but also where it's lacking, and I am interested in taking what I've written about for A Link to the Past and carrying onward with Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess just as I started with FFVI to FFIX.

Anyway, I'm sorry to bore you guys with all that. Honestly, it was the only negative for me, and as I look at all the games I now have and can play on Xbox One X, PS4, and Switch together, it does make me concerned that I'll be overwhelming myself.

So, just as I try not to let the pile bother me, I'm going to try and make sure my creative hobbies do not stress me out... which is now easier because, knowing I cannot release this Link to the Past video in time, I've managed to just relax and be glad I'll have a video in January for the first time in a few years.

Otherwise, been a pretty good month, even if there aren't a lot of titles I beat.

Happy new year, I forgot to do my December report last night.

Holy crap on a cracker. It's even worse than I thought. Well, the good news, I suppose, is that I bought none of these, so really, I promise, officer, it's really not my fault. It's a testament to the generosity of the GWJ community in general, and my Secret Stanta Pyxistyx in particular.

Finished:

  • Vampyr (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) - The combat got really frustrating, some dialog was super repetitive. It's a bit of a shame, because I liked the concept, but they went absolutely nowhere with it.

Dropped:

Backloggery is at 19, so a big step back. I didn't expect this month to be good as the gifts arrived, and I'm very grateful for each and every one of them. Folks more eloquent than I have already spoken up in this thread or the 2020 thread about their relationship to the Pile, and I echo a lot of those thoughts, so I won't belabor the point. The thing is... I have a Pile. And that's okay. And I'm trying to keep it under a reasonable level. I'm not overspending, and tracking the Pile is actually something I enjoy (Spreadsheet Seamstress was a tag suggestion for me, and for good reason). So I'm going to head into 2020 and keep on this merry path, playing as much or as little as makes me happy, keeping the journal of my travels along the way. All the best wishes to you all for the year ahead of us.

Also, I'm sorry, Cces, but I have to say something.

December Report!

Prior posts:

Not a bad year! I made some progress against the backlog, and played a lot of good stuff. And, since I've been tracking my backlog (about two years ago), I've been a bit more focused and finished more games, rather than doing what I used to do -- start something, play a bunch of hours, then get distracted by something shiny and lose focus. I've found that I enjoy gaming a bit more now that I'm doing a better job of either seeing things through, or intentionally calling a game done when I don't enjoy it.

Buying a new house and getting a promotion at work really screwed up my pile last year. That and 4 of the games that I beat were 40-100+ hour time sinks so I did get a decent amount of gaming time. I'll have to come up with a planned games to beat list for 2020 but hopefully this year will be more stable so I can make more progress.
