[News] Post a D&D Picture

Previous incarnations of Cleveland/P&C/D&D have had an image thread, to handle political cartoons and other image-based stuff that doesn't belong in the general post-a-picture threads.

If any of them spawn an extended discussion, please spawn it off into its own thread. Replies to non-picture replies should take the form of a link pointing to a post on a different discussion thread.

And I shouldn't have to say it, but the images still need to abide by the rules.

Yes, I will happily pay for the 5000 kids who don't need help to go to college as long as I can also pay for the 5,000,000 who do.

Means testing sounds good in theory, but always winds up leaving people out, and winds up being used as a lever to divide and demonize, and to weaker support and a gradual erosion of benefits because it's easier to move the cutoff when it affects someone else.

This is, I think, the big lie about social policy that society will never accept no matter how strongly it's supported analytically: that it's pretty much always cheaper and more effective for social programs to just give people money, than to build structures for testing how badly they need it, testing how they're using it, and so on. People viscerally hate the idea of somebody undeserving getting handouts, but the reality is that structures to prevent that are always just bureaucracies that run people in circles without creating value and siphon money off to middle men.

It's the age-old story where a city spends $14M to on drug tests for welfare recipients and thereby prevents $185 in welfare fraud. It doesn't make society mad, because fundamentally society considers paying one guy to do drugs worse than letting a hundred people go hungry.

I think there is a lot of research to show that effect but I think it is something genetic. Research has shown that babies under a year can sense when something is "unfair" (like another baby getting more toys, or more affection, etc) and they obviously can't understand the bigger concepts. It is just something built into us.

Now that doesn't mean it isn't something we should work to change - a lot of our "instincts" are not helpful or good in modern society but I think it means we need to look at different kinds of solutions.

YES!! I want to pay for college for every person, millionaire kids are people, they get free college if they want it. Same with healthcare. Thats what a human right means.

Fun story, I actually know someone who was born in a millionaire's family and then she was disinherited and disowned when she came out as bisexual. So yes, she should go to college for free. Everyone should go to college for free.

As long as the millionaire is paying taxes, the millionaire is paying for their kids to get free college. I'm helping pay for everyone else's.

thats still tip toeing back to means testing, it's something you have to set up a system to check. Every person. Every single person, period, end of conditions. No 'as long as...' or 'only if...' or 'you have to be..."

address millionaires cheating on their taxes as it's own issue without leveraging human rights.

Nothing like the guy who said literal Nazis were "very fine people," who employs white supremacists, and who just told a room full of American Jews that because of Warren's wealth tax "you have to vote for me, you have no choice" try to sign away people's 1st Amendment right to please one his largest donors, Sheldon Adelson, who's founded and funds a group that fights against the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement.

Worse, even though this isn’t literally The Nuremberg Laws 2.0, declaring US citizens a separate nationality, for any purpose, is exactly a thing that makes Nazis very happy.

Modern American Nazis also support anti-BDS laws, because they think Jews should just go live in Israel, so they also, by chance, support a strong Israel.

This is a much scarier move than the press is likely to portray it as.

From the article that's from:

After meeting with President Trump at the White House in the Oval Office on Tuesday, Russia's foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said there was no talk of election interference and brushed off the notion that it was a topic of importance.

Whew! The people who interfered with the last election have said they're not going to do that again. Sets my mind at ease.

Link.

Is that...?

Does the person making the joke know the scene those paintings depict? Or are they ignoring it?
