Monster Hunter World Catch-All

Was in the Squad at 8 EST, but unfortunately can't stay past 9 EST

Aw, I just jumped on!

East Coast/West Coast time difference is kinda rough, especially through the week. I can rarely make it home before 6pm Pacific at the earliest.

Smaller group tonight it sounds like, but I was going to try to jump on for an hour or something here soon if I can get something to eat.

Edit: Missed everyone tonight. I finally got into another online Gold Rath hunt and even managed to cut the tail. I carved a shard from it instead of a surspike, though. God.

Yay! Gold Rath event quest this week. I still haven't gotten a surspike from a tail carve yet, but it's a lot more opportunity for kill rewards.

It's almost Monday again, so I'm looking forward to doing some monster hunting after missing last week!

Aim for 5-8pm PST; if you can only jump in partway through, that's totally okay, too. We'll see when I show up; I'm helping a friend with some stuff tomorrow, but we've already talked about me hopping on his PS4 for a few hours in the middle.

As always, if you need an invite to the Monster Hunter Mondays squad, ping me here or on PSN.

It's been a busy week, so I've lost track of what's going on. Any good events? I've passed MR 100, and while my endgame gear could be super-optimized-endgame, I'm totally fine with doing assigned quests and optional quests. I'm not feeling a particular need to throw myself into the long grind, when I can just be playing with friends!

Yep! The new content update just dropped, so this fella joined the hunt:

There are new quests for Horizon: Zero Dawn gear, and the guiding lands has a new tundra region.

Who's down tonight? I'm banging on my head against Acidic Galvenus right now. Also trying togather odogoraan pieces for my anti-leshen plan.

Wow... new augment system introduced with the new encounter. You can now put multiple full armor set bonuses on your weapon. That's nuts.

I'm all for more power creep!

I'm afraid I'm going to miss tonight. I mentioned that I'm helping a friend with some stuff; he has Monster Hunter downloaded, but I forgot that I haven't really checked in on it for a while. It's downloading a 40 GB update now, and that's not gonna finish in an hour

Sorry, I'm really bummed to miss two in a row! If someone puts up a stream, I'll try to check it out for a bit.

I should jump online in about 20 minutes or so, just finishing a podcast.

Worked late tonight and didn't make it

Gotta get some practice in before the 13th...

Thrilling was in "Quotations."

Squaps didn't share voice so I just sound like a crazy person in that stream. Perfect!

Fun hunts though. Video and Bobby are both getting close to the end of the story, so they should be able to do most non-tempered monsters soon.

Squaps and I did a couple tempered Gold Rathian investigations while Video was stuck in cutscenes. We downed it in 8 minutes the second time. Felt pretty great.

I only remember you, me , and bobby. Wait was Squaps there? I thought you were doing a bit like you were talking to someone.

I've started playing Monster Hunter on Steam, after grabbing it from a recent sale, and about 5 hours in I'm already liking it. It's my first MH game, although I messed around with Dauntless for a bit earlier this year. MH has long been a curiosity since I know people who play it for hundreds of hours and can't get enough, but I didn't have a ready sherpa to onboard me so I never got around to it. But this is supposed to be the most approachable MH yet, and now I have a PC that can run it! And if I decide to stick with it, then Iceborne comes out in like a month.

So after the first main mission, I picked a sidequest where I was supposed to go gather fancy mushrooms, but instead wandered off to explore and found and tracked a Great Jagras, and started the attack/run/chase loop. He eventually ran off into region 4, and while following him I saw an icon saying "Anjanath tracks," and idly wondered what an Anjanath was, since I didn't pay close attention to what the track looked like. I caught up to the Great Jagras and resumed stabbing him, until a T-Rex came in and stomped on both of us and we both went down like a couple of sacks of potatoes. I didn't even get to loot the corpse when I respawned.

Welcome to Monster Hunter World, I suppose.

That's fantastic.

I'm also on Steam! Truth is, most of my stuff is on my Steam account and I'll be transitioning back to that very soon because I have a ridiculous amount of jewels on my PC account. Steam account is roxlimn2k. Friend me up and we can farm up stuff for Iceborne. One month is just enough. Bit short, really, but it's all good.

Friend request sent. For now, I'm just working through the content and trying to learn. I was given the defender armor right off the bat, but people on the internet seem to be of the opinion that they're some of the best armor in the game, but people who use them without really understanding the game may find they're more of a crutch, so I'm trying to play it normal so far.

I just beat my first Pukei-Pukei, which didn't seem too hard but I still got knocked out twice before I could land the finishing blow. Well, the first one was kind of cheap, since it quickly turned into a melee-a-trois between me and the Pukei-Pukei and an Anjnath, and I was the most fragile of the three. That Anjanath, though. He seemed to really enjoy popping up repeatedly at some of the worst times for this mission. Kinda funny, it reminds me of the Xenoblade games where enemies of all levels may be in an area, and some you're just not equipped to beat yet. Except instead of patrolling a moderate region, he roams the whole map and can show up and throw a party at any time.

My main issue so far is dodging and getting away long enough to heal; I'm mostly alternating between the light bowgun, which is plenty mobile so I don't have to worry about getting close and dodging a lot, and the Gunlance, which isn't mobile at all but I can guard a lot of stuff. But I like the Gunlance because of the name, and the times when I can drop a Wyvern Fire on a fool. That's actually how I killed the Pukei-Pukei; he was already at pretty low health and missing a tail when I went down the second time, and when I respawned and caught up with him, I found him sleeping. The Wyvern Fire I unloaded into his face quickly woke him, but a couple more hits and he was down.

So out of curiosity, what are people's favorite weapons?

I'm also on Steam and still play fairly regularly, as I only started the game a few months ago. Steam account in profile.

As for favorite weapons, I started with long sword. The foresight slash is very powerful once you know a monster's moves.

Diablos convinced me to try gunlance and I moved on to regular lance from there. There are some fights where being able to tank through big hits is very useful.

My last transition to bow was triggered by a tempered Bazelguese. Melee is just a high risk, low reward proposition against that monster. It has proved useful against several others including a certain elder dragon's horns.

I mainly rotate between these 3 based on the hunt, but I've at least experimented with them all. That's even easier now as the defender weapons are very strong and cheap to build. I mainly wish I was better at sword and shield as well as hunting horn. Maybe some day they'll click.

I started out with Sword and Shield because it's forgiving to play that weapon at a survivable level. It's the most action-y weapon in the game, in that you can almost always cancel out of a move and the combos require a lot of button-pushing. I transitioned out of it because once you get good enough, you realize it's actually a really, really demanding weapon to use at a high level.

Then I went to Light Bowgun because I like Third Person shooters and that's the most like a shooter. But I had to go to Gunlance to pass a wall later in the game. A wall is a monster that forces you to know a mechanic. If you do not know the mechanic, it will not let you win.

After Gunlance, I went to Charge Blade, which is my current main.

MHW demands that you know how to hunt a monster while another monster is trying to kill you. It introduces that mechanic early with Anjanath, but he is not the worst invader by a long shot. LOL.

Hunting Horn is my overall favorite weapon. Sadly, there's still a misconception that it's a multiplayer, support only weapon, but it is not. I easily soloed my way through both 4U and Generations with it, and it has been my secondary weapon in both base MHW and Iceborne. It is slower to kill than the highest dps melee weapons, but not by much. It needs to be a little less damage because in a group setting, the buffs it provides are borderline overpowered. I just love the way this weapon plays.

I mained Gunlance in the MHW base game and Charge Blade in Iceborne. Gunlance offers safety, unmitigated damage through shelling, and versatility in playstyle through the three different classes of gunlances. I'm still most partial to the full burst playstyle. Blowing things up is fun.

Charge Blade really does feel like the jack of all trades, master of all weapon. It blocks, it stuns, it has unmitigated phial damage, it's mobile, it can burst hard, it can have Mind's Eye, it can offer great sustained damage, and now it can offer solid elemental damage too. I now understand why many players that start with Charge Blade often don't end up playing anything else. It took a lot longer to feel comfortable with Charge Blade than most other weapons I've tried, but I've got it now. Feels good.

I'm going to be running the Safi'jiva siege on and off for as long as it's available. The new weapon upgrade system is pretty insane.

Arrekz has a pretty good primer:

And Team Darkside has a more detailed breakdown:

If anyone else wants to join in, look for me online.

It's Monday again! Time to meet up, 5-8pm PST, 8-11 EST, and hunter some monsters!

Gotta admit, I got tied up in Titanfall 2 again and kind of missed everything that's happened in MHW. I was just hitting some of the final gear upgrades, getting that whole 'almost completed my collection' feeling, so another tier of gear upgrades hit at just the wrong time. That's okay! We'll make it right by slaughtering our way through the local ecosystem.

I'm a maybe leaning "no" for tonight, I've got a TTRPG group coming over to play. On a bette rnote, I beat the annoying vibrating monster at the end of the main story, so I've only got to some small "paperwork" in the guiding lands to get to safi'jiva. Still need to get a large eldar gem though to finished off my Vaal set.

Favorite weapons: Hammer and Great Sword. Attack slow, and hit hard. Though I also swap in HEavy bow gun from time to time, to get some of that sweet sweet DAKKA DAKKA.

I tend to try and main a different weapon every game. My overall favorites though are Great Sword, Insect Glaive, Charge Blade, and Bow.

I am a sparkling aerial ballerina, who occasionally takes a side job on sword and board.

I'm running Lance currently. I started with Heavy Bowgun, then Greatsword, briefly Sword & Shield, and now Lance. I've found that blocking just ends up being important to my playstyle, and Lance's ability to rapidly switch between total offense and total defense is working for me.

Currently my favorite is sword and shield, but I am still in the learning phase of charge blade. Played through the main game on PC with only greatsword and those massive hits are awesome, but I just love the mobility and versatility of SnS.

They're all so fun aren't they?

Charge Blade and Bow. Loved guard pointing in MH4 and never looked back.

Picked up hammer again recently but I want something a tad more complex. Maybe I'll jump to Long Sword or Lance? I can't hunting horn for the life of me, but I do love the doots. My problem right now is I've got too much recklessness because of CB. I see a scream or attack animation and I think, ooh "Guard point" and then I think "sh*t, I'm hammering" Need to discover good spacing and pacing for those non-shield weapons.
