Drawing / Sketching / Digital Painting

I'm glad you finished the month, Godzilla Blitz! What you wrote reminded me of something a famous artist whose name escapes me once said on the Sidebar podcast: "illustration is art under the circumstances," which I think is exactly right. Sometimes there are a million things converging and taking away your time, yet you have to finish your drawing, but what matters is that you do.

Thanks!

I really enjoyed Inktober. I've never had formal training or informal training, and the last time I drew something with my hands was last Inktober. I'm pretty much a dude with a pen.

That said, I feel like I made some progress this year. Most of the time I finish something and I know it's not good, and sometimes that makes it hard to continue, especially after a few bad drawings in a row. But there were enough times where I finished something and thought, "Heh, that doesn't totally suck." It made trying again the next day easier.

And I really appreciated the encouragement, the feedback, the likes. When you're not good at drawing your stuff gets pretty much ignored. Honestly, that's to be expected and I totally get it. But it does mean that words of encouragement are super appreciated. They helped a lot, so thanks to all for the support!

What's everyone been up to?

I've been reading Console Wars, by Blake J. Harris, and it inspired me to draw my first Sonic in about 25 years:

The book is an absolute blast, by the way .

"the day job"* (such as it is) has been consuming all of my time right now (more than it deserves for how little money i make from it, tbh) and sucks out most of my drawing energy unfortunately. I'm still very much focused on my "maps, tokens and other RPG stuff" Patreon account through - if (again) i ever have the time to go back and update it properly! Right now my next project idea is a set of illustrated potion bottle reference cards for 5e D&D, and I need to continue putting together my "maptober" dungeon encounter maps.

*basically freelancing for a local publisher doing simple book layout stuff and only able to charge for, like, a fraction of the time it's ACTUALLY taking me to complete these projects.

That sounds less than ideal... but your project sounds awesome! I hope you do find the time and energy to work on it!

I found time to draw a thing!

(It's a teeny bit more..NSFW than my usual stuff so i'll spoiler tag it just in case)

Nice! I really like the colors! Also, I don't think that's the first time I say that about one of your drawings .

I've drawn a couple of chimp portraits in the past couple of days, but I'm sticking to black and white ink, as if we were still in Inktober instead of December:

I painted my daughter and the spirit of OC's for her. She is big into drawing cats of all kinds so I thought it would be fitting. I then printed and frame it for her.

Sorry for the fuzzy second photo of the frame. :/

I also painted a weird little thing that my son drew called "The weirdest hot dog". This one went on a shirt at his request (no photo of shirt).

This is amazing.

That is one weird hotdog!

Super cool!

Good work, everyone! Love the creativity!

Spoiler tagged for NSFW-ishness again.

**actually, scratch that. It'll probably be safer to post this on a Blogger blog since wordpress technically doesn't allow "adult content" and i don't want to get my main blog banned!
Going to start up a blogger blog for this instead just to be safe.

These will probably get a whole lot more NSFW over there, so fair warning.

Hello, artist friends!

Have you seen this tweet from the Inktober Twitter account that was posted yesterday?

Who’s up for something new this year?⁣

To keep yourself in good inking shape we are announcing weekly drawing prompts!⁣

Every week we will post a new prompt. You have a week to draw it and post it online with the hashtag #inktober52.⁣

First prompt: FLIGHT
#inktober2020

I don't know that I'm committing to all 52 weeks (plus of course the 31 days in October, which will be here before we know it), but I think I'm going to give it a go, especially since our own Weekly Prompt thread hasn't been active in a while. What do you say? Any other takers?

oho. i'm trying to do something weekly with a local group anyway so, this is a good idea!

...i just wish i wasn't coming up totally blank on the first prompt

Cool!

Humm. This might be the perfect amount of commitment for me. I might have to wipe the November and December dust off the pens.

Yessssss!

Here's my Inktober52 #1 drawing: "flight."

That pegasus looks very happy to be up in the air. And why wouldn't it be? It can fly, which is awesome.

I might try and use these prompts to get me drawing again (though it would be digital for me as usual). The first one might be a bit late though, depending on whether I find some time this evening.

Thank you, Ravanon! And I hope you do find time to participate --I'm curious to see what you come up with!

Okay, here's something a little quick to start off with. In general, I think I might use these prompts to learn how to draw things I haven't tried to draw in detail before—in this case, wings.

Week 1—Flight:

Experimenting with the smudge tool in Procreate, something I don't usually use. The results are okay, but I should probably have done things in a slightly different way to avoid some of the 'artefacts' that show up if you look too closely (please don't look too closely).

Very cool! And those smudges look good!

The smudges, I can't unsee them, Gaaaaahhhhh!

That's actually a good idea Ravanon!

i'm blanking on inspiration for this first prompt completely, but to be fair i am full of the cold at the moment.

I looked too closely at the smudges Ray!

The next inktober 52 prompt is up... Shadow.

I've still not done the first, been too I'll all week to focus on drawing anything. I will catch up though when I feel better!

I hope you feel better soon!

I too haven't done the first one yet.

I also hope you feel better soon, pyxistyx!

As for this week's prompt, I'm still thinking about it, but hey --I drew another chimp last night!
