2019 - 12 Month Pile Program

I'm not going to ask this in the relevant console threads, but my kids have been saving for a Switch, but the closer we get to that target, the harder I'm finding it to justify the purchase.

We have a WiiU LOADED with pretty much every Nindie title that released, plus a bunch of Wii titles for it ("classic console" and physical disks). They haven't completed the single player mode of Splatoon, and I was fortunate enough to grab BotW in physical form for the WiiU when it was released.

Outside of Mario Odyssey, I'm struggling to find a compelling reason to buy one. They'd be much better off buying a couple of additional controllers for my PS4, and I set up family accounts/profiles for them...

Any thoughts?

Honestly... I'm not going to push for the purchase. Especially if you already have a WiiU. I haven't found it all that appealing, and for the life of me, I don't see the appeal of the Switch. Maybe it's because I don't really have to share the TV with my kids, maybe it's because I don't do a lot of commuting. Maybe it's because my kids already game quite enough on the iPad's, and I don't want them to get any more screen time than they're already getting. But yeah, aside from Mario Kart 8 (which I am SICK of to death, despite the five year old's protests) and maybe Just Dance... I can't argue for it.

Cant exactly speak fromt the kids-perspective, but I have played 3 great games on Switch (BotW, Odyssey and Xenoblade 2), so I dont regret the purchase - especially since the only other Nintendo machine I have ever had is a 3DS, I am still waiting for them to dig into that back-catalogue... When already having a WiiU, that surely takes away some of the value.
The thing itself is very much based on the mobility, which I dont care much about. If that aspect is not compelling, the purchase does seem hard to justify. They should release a Switch-box without a screen, that would be awesome.
Maybe get a used one whenever a Switch 2.0/Pro comes out. Hasn't there been strong rumors about that for a while.

As usual, it comes down to what type of games you want to play and whether there are strong use-cases for the portable factor. For me, playing a turn-based RPG laying down in bed with the screen gripped by a tablet holder over my face is phenomenal, comfortable, and good for my back. This means even though I have Valkyria Chronicles Remastered for PS4, I'd rather play it on Switch for that portability factor.

I don't recall enough of your tastes to say what is and isn't worth it, but this year especially Nintendo has been striking it out of the park regularly. Octopath Traveler last year was a wonderful throwback JRPG whose greatest weakness is its story (and I guess "grindiness", though I didn't have to do any grinding at all to "beat it". Still took 70-some hours, and there's an additional ending that will require grinding).

Right now, three of us in the Nintendo Switch games thread are convinced Astral Chain is Game of the Year material (you can find some of my thoughts here on my blog or listen to my podcast on it). There's a huge community of players that are old and new to Fire Emblem that are absolutely loving Three Houses, praising its story and characters as being some of the best of the franchise and greatly improved in terms of "anime bullcrap" compared to prior games, with one of the most common complaints being that it is too easy, if anything.

Link's Awakening is a wonderful trip back to old skool Zelda design with a modern coat of paint, wonderful if you never played the original. Super Mario Maker 2 has a whole host of features that were completely absent from the original Super Mario Maker, increasing the game's versatility. Speaking of tactical games, Mario + Rabbids is evidently the best X-Com-alike you can get on the market, with your typical Nintendo-style collect-a-thon thrown in. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is ...well, ultimate Smash Bros. The single player mode was startlingly complete and enjoyable, and the massive roster gives the feeling of longevity. If you like Smash, then Ultimate is a necessity.

I've yet to hear anyone say something negative about Untitled Goose Game. Expect it on many GotY lists this December and January.

Then there is, of course, Splatoon 2, ARMS, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and Super Mario Odyssey, in addition to upcoming titles like Luigi's Mansion 3 at the end of this month, Pokemon Sword & Shield, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, as well as all the titles I'm not thinking of.

So there's a lot of games the Switch has to offer, and not all of them ports or direct sequels to WiiU games. It's just a matter of what you like and might find worth it, but just as the WiiU started hitting its stride and releasing some of its best games in year 3 and onward, the Switch is now hitting that stride.

But, I am also one of the local Nintendo Evangelists, and their design tends to cater to my tastes far more frequently than the competition. I also simply enjoy having two docks, so I can carry the system from one room to the other depending on which TV is available to play on. So, it's versatile and fits a lot of my personal use-cases.

Thanks all!

Appreciate the perspectives. I can see it being great for myself, but they haven't been saving up to buy me a console (although I do like that idea ).

You list all the titles that would sway me ccesarano, I absolutely love the look of Link's Awakening! I'd even add "portable Skyrim" to the list of wants.

My kids are heavily into Pokemon, so Sword and Shield has them pumped.

Maybe I look at a couple of Switch Lites (they are really motivated to save, it's crazy)? That could be a different path for them, as upgrades to their new2DS which they love playing. Especially with the next Animal Crossing hitting in 2020.

Lots to think about!

If you go the route of getting two Switch Lights, speak to some of the folks in the Nintendo threads regarding the accounts situation. My understanding is you can have one "Owner" account tied to games that others can then play, but they'll be booted off once the owner or another player decides to play it. That's regarding digital purchases, at least.

Physical works as it always has. Still, with the world moving forward more and more into digital (or titles like Untitled Goose Game, which is currently digital only) these sorts of account issues are going to matter more and more.

Buying you a Switch so they can get the PS4 for themselves. Smart.

Picked up a Switch in Spring - If I was getting one now for the boy, I'd go with a Lite.

Only reason our regular Switch sits in the dock is to charge and that's it.

Edit. but yeah, check on that Account business.

Those little buggers have been 4 dimensional chessing me all this time!?!?

Unless I miraculously beat Luigi's Mansion 3 in one day, I don't think I'll be tallying anything else. So, here's the October Report.

GAMES COMPLETED:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
  • Control

GAMES PLAYED:

  • Crystar
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses
  • Luigi's Mansion 3
  • Destiny 2: Shadowkeep

SHORT AND SWEET:

Destiny 2 took up a lot of my time.

THE OVERWROUGHT NAVAL-GAZING:

Spoiler:

I feel like this month just flew by in a span of two weeks. I finished Link's Awakening this month? Are you sure I completed Astral Chain last and not in October? Hrm... Really, the death knell was the weak decision to drop cash on Destiny 2's Shadowkeep DLC. I dunno why I felt the compulsion to do so, but I did, and I've been dragged so thoroughly into that game's clutches that I've finally made peace with its grind. Unfortunately, this means even after I got finished with Link's Awakening, I wasn't able to swiftly jump right back into Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It's been slow going with that game, as I'm only on Chapter 16. The end is getting closer, but the school nature of the game's formula means there's a lot of stat boosting and support manipulating to get through. It's a lot of game, but I wasn't able to finish it in time for Luigi's Mansion 3 to release today.

I've also been busy in physical life space, enough so that I'd have whole weekends I didn't even touch a video game and barely played anything throughout the week (and when I did, it was typically at night signing into Destiny 2). It reached such a point that I think this week I sort of gave up my social obligations and decided I'm going to just play games all week. I really hammered into Control the past few days and managed to complete it, and am now free to either move on to Judgment or Crystar (part of me is tempted to Platinum Control, since I only have three trophies left, but they'd be a grind and I would rather move on for now). Star Wars: Jedi: Fallen Order is out in two weeks, and that was the last planned PS4 purchase of the year... well, that and The Outer Worlds, but... yeah, I'm really wondering whether I'll actually finish Crystar or Judgment at this point. I already held off on The Outer Worlds for fiscal and time reasons, but I certainly want it. I wouldn't mind it being a December purchase.

This leaves me wondering if I'm even going to bother getting Pokemon Shield.

I did make an adjustment to my workout schedule, sending me to the gym in the mornings before work rather than after. This should allow me to more easily squeeze in game time during the weeks.

...oh, yeah, I still gotta finish recording Darksiders footage so I can make that video.

I expressed to my therapist this week that I think one of the reasons I wanted to so desperately just sink into my games this week was so I could beat something and feel like I was productive in some way. Perhaps. I think having these incomplete games I enjoy piling up is also just wearing on me. Regardless, working on a better balance between life and games, for sure.

nothing? and if I did, it wasn't memorable enough to remember.

Basically Trails of Cold Steel 3 took over my life once it launched. I haven't touched any game since. I am about 40 hours in, just over half way point, so sadly at this pace I might be done with it in couple weeks.

October report:

Added:
Nothing

Finished:
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood (PC)

Dropped:
Grandia III (PS2) (too boring)

Played:
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
Dragon's Crown (Vita)
Monster Hunter World Iceborne (PS4)
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (3DS)

I haven't gotten very far into Dragon's Crown, but hopefully I can finish it in November, and keep moving along in Breath of the Wild (I think I have found 30 shrines so far, with 3 divine beasts to go). I don't anticipate finishing Zelda anytime soon, even though it has become my new podcast game.

October Report. I moved in the beginning of the moth. Mostly spent time rearranging the collection and tossed some boxes out. Sorry fellow collectors. Don’t need boxes taking up space.

Learning to stream to my phone via PS4/Steam due to placing the stuff upstairs. Works okay.

Added. Trails in Cold Steel 3. Awe yeah. It’s Rean time.

Been playing: Dead Cells, Grindstone and The Outer Worlds.

Finished: Nothing

October report:

Purchased:
Trine 4 (PS4)

Finished:
Gem Smashers (Vita)
Mecho Tales (Vita)

Played:
Dragon's Crown
Trine 4
Need for Speed (PS4)

I am still in a gaming/life funk so knocked out a couple short games on the Vita that helped add to my trophy pile since the Sony PSN trophy points thing expires soon. Trine 4 is a relatively easy puzzle game that is relaxing and fun at the end of a long day. I am also dabbling in Dragon's Crown for the JRPG club. The only purchases in the foreseeable future are going to be for the children so plenty of time to chip away at the pile if I get the urge to get back into gaming anytime soon.

October report~

Added:

Beat:
Nier Automata (PS4)

The Witness (Steam)
God of War 2018 (PS4)
Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4)
The Witcher 3 - Blood and Wine DLC (PS4)
Resident Evil HD remaster (PS4)
Black Mesa (Steam)
Firewatch (Steam)
Paper Mario: Color Splash (Wii U)
Star Fox Zero (Wii U)
Star Fox Guard (Wii U)
Subnautica (Steam)

At this point, I don't even know if I'll have 10 games for the goty thread. ^^; I was planning on buying both Death Stranding and Pokemon Sword this month but I had to replace a tire on my car so I'm just going with Pokemon. Mostly because I want to experience the raid battles, camping and trading with friends at release.

Nice idea. I did my Game of the Month thing to keep track of possible GOTY contenders last year, but this is better...

I figured the once-a-month check ins would be a perfect opportunity to remember the new games I've played this year. It's worked out really well, and I've actually been surprised by how many new games I've tried.

So a mid-month jump in for mid-month naval gazing.

I put together my 2019 GotY Contenders document today, which is always a work in progress and serves an additional purpose. I use it to better categorize and tally up all the games I played in the year using my spreadsheet for tracking these things month-by-month (I suppose I could do it all in the spreadsheet, but it's easier for me to use the spreadsheet throughout the year and then sort it in separate columns in a doc). I have games of 2019 played with beaten titles in bold, games of prior years that I'd never played/beaten before with those beaten in bold, and new to this year are repeat plays, allowing me to track games I decided to dip back into and play again because that's something I want to do more of.

What was interesting about this tally is that, until June, it was a good mix of all three categories. New games from 2019, games from before 2019 that were new to me, and then games I had already played. Once June hit, I stopped gaming as much and thus any gaming time I had was relegated to new titles only. This hasn't changed all that much approaching the Fall, though that's in part due to the onslaught of releases that we've been hit with.

Hoping to improve that in the next year. However, I'm also feeling good about what I might be able to complete in November. I might actually have a lot done, and my completion percentage of new games by year's end could be at a pretty good spot as well. I'm pretty much 60-75% certain I'm done buying games for the year, despite there being plenty I'd love to get around to.

It'd be 100% but I'm being tempted by all the positive reception to the new Pokemon.

Regardless, I'm especially excited to have half of Thanksgiving week off, meaning I should be able to shove a lot of time into games and making sure I get closer to completing a bunch of stuff.

And that's the mid-month naval gazing report.

Guess I'll just go ahead and be first to post since I know I'm not beating anything today.

GAMES COMPLETED:

  • Luigi's Mansion 3
  • Judgment
  • Star Wars: Jedi: Fallen Order: EA
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

GAMES PLAYED:

  • Crystar
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses
  • Destiny 2: Shadowkeep
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
  • Darksiders
  • Borderlands 3 Free Weekend

SHORT AND SWEET:

Changing focus of December's video, should be good to clear out the 2019 list of unbeaten games.

THE OVERWROUGHT NAVAL-GAZING:

Spoiler:

Looking back at my mid-month report, I'd say I managed to do pretty well. However, when considering my Darksiders video and some of the observations I wanted to make, I realized I'd need footage from Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess to make an accurate comparison for dungeon design. Considering I've been wanting to do a Twilight Princess video, I decided I'd push Darksiders to a 2020 video so I can begin recording Twilight Princess footage and have the two projects overlap. This led to me recording A Link to the Past footage for a potential comparison between it and Link's Awakening, which turned in script form into a different but unclear thesis. After having Garion take a look at the initial script, I uh... well I got a lot to think about and not much time to do it in because my thesis is weak and I really need to figure out what I'm saying with this video.

That aside, I shouldn't need to do much recording this month, meaning all gaming time can be dedicated to the three remaining 2019 purchases I need to beat: Crystar, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Crystar will likely be beaten soon, as I'm pretty sure I've passed the halfway point and the different chapters shouldn't take too long. I think I'm hitting my limit on Destiny 2 now that everything requires "Prestige" level gear, so most PS4 gaming time will likely be focused on single player (unless my friends actually do get Castle Crashers on sale and discover the joy of its co-op, as I just snagged that one). Fire Emblem is also closer to the end point, chapter 17 of I'm guessing around 20. I anticipate both of those being beaten before Christmas, and it possible to also have beaten Bloodstained by then.

However, I'm also kind of using the completion of those games as a carrot. I visited a friend yesterday and watched him play some Death Stranding, a game I was pretty convinced I didn't want to play. Upon seeing it in action, I realized the handful of reviews I'd watched -- both positive and negative -- didn't really explain the appeal of it well. I was getting interested just watching him. I imagine there'll be stuff that will keep it from being mind-blowing to me, and I refuse to accept the idea that the game is revolutionary and will change everything. It really kind of is the simulationist Breath of the Wild with connectivity mechanics thrown in. That's iterative, not revolutionary, but that's also not a bad thing. Regardless, once I've completed Crystar, I am free to purchase and play Death Stranding.

Once both Fire Emblem and Bloodstained are finished, however, I'm free to purchase Pokemon. What I've seen of the gameplay via a highlights of someone's Let's Play has me thinking this is going to have the appeal Black/White or X/Y had for me.

What will 2020 hold? Don't know. During Black Friday shopping my sister overheard me talking to someone about how nice that Gears Xbox One X is looking but I just can't purchase it right now. Evidently she sent a text to my niece, who was chilling with my parents at the time, and told her to drop major hints. So there's a percentage chance I'll be getting myself a new console for Christmas. At the same time, I wouldn't count on it, so who knows? If I get an Xbox One X I'll have a bunch of new titles I can play. If not, then I'll start playing catch-up on games I missed this year (ha ha ha yeah right have you seen next year's release list up until May?)

Regardless, I have a good feeling about December. Just needs balance, as all things in life require.

I've played a good bit of stuff, but haven't really notched any games off the pile this November.

New:

Greedfall (PS4)
Yomawari: Midnight Shadows (PS4)
Citizens of Space (PS4)
Xenon Valkyrie+ (PS4)
Death Stranding (PS4)
The Park (PS4)
Assassin's Creed Odyssey (PS4)

No games beating, but I did Platinum God of War (2018)

Added:
Still nothing!

Finished:
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (SW)

Played:
Wild ARMs 2 (PS1)

Never got around to Dragon's Crown, but will do in December. Breath of the Wild just took over my life and would not let go until I got tired of chasing shrines and decided to get it done. Started playing Wild ARMs 2 randomly two days ago. No idea if I will get to the end yet. I don't hate it, but oh god, those PS1 polygons...

Added:
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (SW)
Medievel

Finished:
Far Cry Primal
Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 3

Playing:
Dragons Crown:
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Breath of the Wild

Did pretty good with Black Friday, only bought two games, Zelda for 30 bucks and Medievil for 20, other than that, didn't buy any games at all, digital or not. Spent my time very effectivly by finishing Trails of Cold Steel 3 and decided to wrap up Far Cry Primal. Plan for December is to do a bit of a game clean up and see what happens.

November time.

Mixing my time with Pokemon and Trails in Cold Steel 2.

Pokemon Ultra Moon / Shield

Trails has been fun but I'm at a snail's pace right now.

Backloggery is at 29, so a fair bit of progress. With Extra Life, I did a fair bit of gaming at the beginning of the month, wrapping up three games. The rest of the month wasn't as great, because I'm tired and just so exhausted, and barely have any energy left at the end of the day. December probably won't be much better, but that's okay.

Decent progress this month. I'll be happy if I can finish Overcooked!, Pokemon Sword and Kingdom Hearts 3 before the new year.

November report:

Added some Black Friday specials:
Life is Strange Season 2
Indivisible

Finished:
Dragon Quest Builders (mostly co-op with the children--when they get stuck on bosses, Dad to the rescue)

Played:
Trine 4
Dragon's Crown (Vita)
Warframe (co-op game to play with my eldest son)

Dropped:
Nothing!

Pretty quiet month for me. Getting close to finishing Trine 4 and will probably start a bigger RPG on the Vita. I've mostly knocked out or just skipped the uninteresting free PS+ Vita games and have RPGs left. Dragon's Crown the second time through isn't as much fun but I'll give it one more try. My goal this year was to get through God of War or Dragon Quest XI...might have to settle for starting God of War here in December. No other anticipated purchases in 2019. 2020 has FF VII, Last of Us 2 and Lego Star Wars Collection but that is a long ways off.
