Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order - Catch All

Of course I can't find it now but I read a hilarious tweet this morning wondering why, with an entire universe of possibilities to choose from, the design they landed on for the protagonist of this game was a dorky ginger kid.

Seriously every time I see his face my interest in this game flags. When a nerd as big as me wants to dunk your protagonist's head in the toilet and take his lunch money, you have a problem.

Your problem is you're a high school bully!!!

I admit, not a big fan of this protagonist. They could have gone so many other directions.

Still got the game though

They've had questions and complaints about the protag since the original teaser/announcement video. I'm on the same boat as yall.

I just got a notice from Amazon that it has shipped to me. I guess I know what I will put in the "what are you playing this weekend" thread.

2 days to go, and I'm frustrated that no brick-n-mortar stores break street date any more.

Even the ma-and-pa ones? Those were how I got my hands on Halo 3 early.

There aren't any ma-and-pa stores left around me ... I will check the 2 stores within walking distance from my work at lunch time and see how I go.

Any reviews yet? Are they holding the embargo until after it's released?

Embargo lifts tonight at midnight ET.

So, yeah, at release.

That's... not encouraging. I think maybe I won't try to pre-load it tonight.

Yeah, because every hero looks like Chris Evans, Chadwick Boseman, or Christian Bale. /s

Anyone know when preload is available on Origin?

It's EA, they've done this numerous times, but, in general, they've been really weird with marketing this year. Stuff is seemingly being sent out to die (*cough* NFS *cough*).

Honestly, they might be feeling burned by previous early release experiences like Mass Effect Andromeda and Battlefront II. If a day one patch isn't available yet, they might not want to push the game out early too.

As a lapsed (near enough ex) Star Wars fan, but a fan of the old games and a fan of Souls-likes, I'll admit this game has me pretty intrigued. Respawn is a good studio, too, so that helps. Can't wait to see what reviews look like.
My biggest problem with the old Lightsaber-based games was how mashy they were, so if this game needs to be played with more nuance it might just be almost what I always wanted from Jedi combat.

I will have played a bit by tomorrow night and will post impressions. I won't get far but I am happy to give some initial thoughts.

reviews embargoed but if you search Youtube there are playthroughs....https://youtu.be/MdbaMH1igTM

Seems kind of dumb but huge companies often make dumb choices.

Or those playthroughs are from streamers consciously or unconsciously breaking embargo, or working around a loophole where a Let's Play is "technically not a review" or something. Or timezone issues. No clue what time it is in Australia right now (doubt it's been Nov. 15th long enough for a completed stream to go up), but they'll probably have stuff online before Americans do.

I feel like there was an instance of a recent game that had a ridiculous review embargo and the game turned out really good, so I don't take it as a sign of anything. Then again, I don't really check reviews to find out if a game is "good" or not. I follow people whose opinions and insight I find interesting and conversational, and most reviews are just boring for me to read or watch.

Already installed on my PS4, so I'll probably play a bit of it tomorrow morning after I wake up.

PC version is marked down to $50 for some reason on Amazon right now if anybody's interested.

Picking a date and sticking to it is a notable improvement over, say, Anthem's series of previews and early accesses and a "real" release date.

Likely matching Walmart's pricing on new games. Walmart now does $10 off everything.

tldr Anthem's marketing budget killed the fall releases' marketing budget.

You might be onto something there.

Odd that Disney isn't helping out though. They probably don't want another IP failure, I'd imagine. Are there ads on Disney+ or anything?

Twitch has a couple dozen streamers live right now if you guys want to take a look.

Oh sh*t, I just now learned that this is a Stig Asmussen joint. I'm now 100x more interested automatically.

Outer Worlds has started to drag a bit for me, so this is coming out at the perfect time. *Fingers crossed* please be good.

Dug about an hour into the game so far. Can’t really comment on the combat because so far it’s just been squashing various bug dudes.

I’m getting huge God of War vibes (the latest one) off the game in its level design and Metroid style secrets that are stashed all over the place. Definitely am enjoying the vistas and traversal.

Won’t comment much on the story other than to say: it’s a Star Wars story. So far they have neither reinvented the wheel nor bashed it straight into a wall.

Édit: forgot the best part! The soundtrack and sound design is A+++

I'm going out to pick up my copy at GameStop at 9. They're open for both this and Pokemon, so it will be interesting to see which one is more popular.

EDIT: Pokémon is more popular by a 8 to 1 margin. I should have known.

That's good to hear. I think when I saw the first trailer I mentioned it reminded me of GoW and looked promising.

Edit: Need to resist pre-ordering. So tempted.

Polygon: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order review: the Star Wars game no one was expecting.

Kotaku (video review): Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order Is One Big Video Game Smoothie, And It’s Delicious.

IGN: A review that opened with:

Prepare to Maclunky.

Phew. Hang on while I clear some space off my PS4 HD before booking it over to the local Target at opening tomorrow.

Picked it up at lunch today, it’s in my PS4, the update is downloaded ... I’m going in!

Just as a counterpoint to the more positive reviews, having put 4 hours in now, I’m definitely glad I’m only “renting” it through EA Premium. I’ve really enjoyed it so far but it’s also nothing special it’s a good, not great game.

The best analogy I can think of would be for folks hopping into Outer Worlds expecting a Fallout experience (in length, depth, breadth), this game is more on the tame and modest end. I enjoy it, I don’t $80 Canadian enjoy it.
