Xbox One Catch-all

Yes.

Even if I don't have a Xbox and it will be PC and mobile only.

Even more yes.

My first yes was all about it being the best feeling controller I've ever used, and about how amazingly life changing it is to have access to four extra inputs which can be used with your thumbs on the sticks.

In addition to that, on the PC you can use third party software (I use something called reWASD currently, but I’ve used various other tools in the past) to map any input on the controller to any keystroke you want (ie, more than just controller buttons) and to create complex shift and macro functions that allow you to build far better control schemes for games than developers ever provide. Granted, you can also do this kind of remapping with any other controller, but reWASD can do a lot more with the Elite thanks to the controller’s onboard profile and remapping features, and again, those life changing bumpers.

Some examples:

- My default control scheme for every game is to have one profile where a tap of the Xbox button toggles play/pause on my current media app, and holding the Xbox button enters a shift mode where the face buttons provide extra playback functions like skipping back and forward in podcasts, and then a second profile I can quickly toggle on the face of the controller that swaps the Xbox button to take screenshots.

- In Witcher 3, I created a control scheme where instead of using a stupid quick pause radial menu to change spells I simply held a shift key (one of the bumpers) and pressed a face button to cast all spells directly without pausing. You know how people complain about how the combat feels a bit clumsy and repetitive in that game? It's night and day better when you can have direct access to all of the tools available to you.

- In a great many games I remap pointless or unused inputs to quick save and quick load, or set them up as functions triggered by a long press on the menu buttons vs the short press.

- Similarly, for games that offer keybinds to go directly to specific menu/interface sections I will frequently map those to long presses on menu buttons, or to face buttons that I’ve remapped to bumpers.

I have an adaptor that lets me use my Xbox Elite controller on my PS4. It’s a little hinky to get working, and it was a little bit pricey, but it’s well worth the cost and hassle to never have to touch a PS4 controller unless a game does something annoying like binding critical functions to motion controls or the touchpad. (There’s a half baked solution for simulating track pad stuff, but it’s not really functional for anything that calls for precise input.)

Hori and Scuf both make an Xbox style controller for PS4. The Scuf ones are basically what MS based their designs on.

Yeah, I took a look at those, but ultimately just bought the adaptor. It was a lot cheaper, and I preferred the look, feel, and paddle positioning of the Elite to the PS4 Scuf, so particularly given how rarely I play PS4 games it seemed like buying a dedicated $150+ controller for the system didn't seem like the way to go.

You were not supposed to convince me to spend $200 on a controller. Damn enablers.

I secretly prefer the PS4 controller but only because I don't like offset sticks.

Apologies.

For what it's worth, I'm a member of a dual income, no children household so my value assessments might be a bit suspect for folks with other circumstances.

As someone who went from strictly playing PS1 and PS2 to playing Xbox360 and XB1, I can tell you that the awkward phase of changing to offset sticks is doesn’t last long. Now I can switch between offset and aligned with absolutely no awkwardness at all.

I have the Scuf elite Xbox and PS4 and neither is as nice as the Elite. The PS4 one was particularly disappointing. Waste of $150.

Obscenely in-depth review of the Elite Series 2 controller for those poor souls who have yet to be peer-pressured into purchasing one:

I read a review that said they were sure the grips couldn't come off of an Elite 2.

FWIW, my grips have been just fine for a couple years now on my Elite 1.0. In any case, it's a great controller and worth the money.

My brother espouses a theory about spending your extra money on the things you use the most and rely on the most. Shoes, absolutely. Since I'm primarily an Xbox gamer, I use my controller almost every single day and it is so worth it. It was initially a gift I had on a wish list and didn't necessarily expect to receive (bless Sigsbee and the young Fremen), but now that I've got one I can easily say it's worth it.

I would consider upgrading but Xbox 4 is less than a year away. I'll watch and wait.

Do you really think they would make that controller obsolete? I’m not saying that Microsoft is above doing something rotten like that but it doesn’t seem likely to me.

I expect controllers to be compatible on XB1 or Scarlett. Could be wrong, but it seems like the direction Microsoft is headed.

Also, I'm not sure Scarlett is a day one purchase, for me. I'm sure they can get met motivated, but I kind a feel like I did back when the 360 came out, in that I was happy enough wit the OG Xbox that I decided to wait. In fact, I I ended up winning my first 360 the following fall when GWJ were still doing raffles for donation drives.

This time, it might even be easier to hold off, as I expect that you will be able to play games online with both XB1 and Scarlett players at the same time. You won't be watching your friends playing Scarlett versions of the same games as you. I think they will be mostly compatible both ways.

I'm sure, at some point, there will be Scarlett games that just won't run on the XB1, but I doubt it is in the first year, maybe two.

I agree, but I'm happy enough with my current Elite that I don't need to bet on it.

Edit: Lots of people on reddit saying these things are buggy. Yes, the people who get buggy ones are the most likely to post, YMMV.

Welp, I'm sold. Besides, Gamepass has saved me enough from buying games that I don't feel guilty for gifting myself that for Christmas.

If only it came in Ocean Shadow, I love the look and feel of that one.

Microsoft has already stated that all Xbox One controller will be compatible with Scarlett.

The Elite 1's rubber wrapper issue wasn't because the wrapper didn't go all the way around. The material itself expanded over time, causing bubbles to form where the glue couldn't hold any more. I would need to see a better explanation of how that problem was addressed before purchasing an Elite 2.

All I really want is two paddles in the back to replace the action of clicking in the thumbsticks. PowerA makes a cheapo version that has programmable paddles. The sticks and buttons get crappier faster because its cheap, but that's still a way better value than an Elite controller if its only going to last a year. If a year passes and everyone agrees the new Elite controller is still going strong then I'll jump on board just to generate less waste plastic.

Alternatively if they released an Elite 1 controller with just smooth plastic instead of a rubberized grip that would work too.

So it's a modern video review?

My Series 2 was only delivered yesterday so I haven’t spent a ton of time with it, but it does feel like a marked improvement over the initial Elite, and the customization options alone are enough to justify the purchase for me. I haven’t had the issues with the triggers that some people are reporting, but the lowest setting is extremely low- it’s possible that the games those people are testing them on aren’t designed for that level of input from the triggers.
I’m not super concerned about the grips peeling because my original release-day Elite only started suffering from that earlier this year, and only after I disassembled it to replace the bumpers.

So it's a modern video review?

No, it's a Tim Rogers, professional video game expert review.

If you’re not already familiar with his schtick, that video is probably a bad place to start. Suffice to say, though, that there is no such thing as a middle ground opinion on what Tim Rogers does — you will either be (justifiably) immediately repulsed by it, or you’ll be intrigued by how bizarre and audacious his self indulgence is that you’ll stick around and realize that while you aren’t (and probably never will be) sure whether the way it mixes with the rest of his madness is good or bad, you absolutely love it.

Sorry to interrupt the controller talk. Thinking of getting my niece the Master Chief Collection for Christmas as she enjoyed Halo: Reach and Destiny on Xbox 360 and PS4, respectively. In fact, I think we have a photo from when she was 8 or 9 playing Combat Evolved co-op with my brother. She melee'd him in the back of the head one time because she wanted his rocket launcher.

I know MS has since released ODST and Reach remastered for the Xbox One, but are they automatically included with the Master Chief Collection? So that if she loads the disc up it'll download those as well or something?

Hah, I didn't realize that was a Tim Rogers review. Now I'll actually watch it

This is a good point - if you set the trigger stops shorter on the Elite 1, you can't go full speed in Rocket League. Not sure what the stops are actually doing, because that makes it seem like they just stop you from pulling the trigger all the way. Is that really useful?

I’ve found it useful in some games, shooters in particular, but YMMV. The lowest setting for the triggers on the Series 2 basically turns them into an on/off button input.

That was my thought. I clicked on the link to see how bad this was, and saw it was Tim Rogers. Then it was, oh, "This is going to be great!"

Here is a "short" review of just the Halo Showcase event in Forza Horizon 4.

Reach isn't out yet and some parts of it are going to be free for MCC owners (multiplayer I think) while other modes (campaign and firefight, it isn't clear if it will be one purchase for both or if they will be sold separately) will be DLC. ODST is an add-on for $5US, but only includes the campaign mode so no firefight. Reach is backwards compatible though and runs quite well on Xbox One if they still have a disc or digital version for 360.

I was impressed that he could do a one hour review on a controller. I thought his shtick was entertaining. It kept me watching much longer than I otherwise would have.

I got this message on my Xbox app

Calling all Heroes! 505 Games celebrates the 5th Anniversary of Gems of War, an epic Puzzle RPG from the creators of Puzzle Quest. Select [Launch app] to download the game for free and collect your special gift to unlock new riches and troops as you combat enemies in match-3 battles. Redeem on your console or at Xbox.com/redeemcode. 3QXKF-J66DM-MKTD6-4XRRX-6GPQZ

Gems is a fun game ruined by free to play bullsh*t.

Our Series 2 arrived yesterday, but I haven't had a chance to mess around with it til tonight. The weight feels very good in hand, solid construction, like holding a good firearm. It's very ergonomic, almost every finger now has a way to contribute to the game, except the useless pinkies. I did remove the under pedals for now, but will replace them once I start pc gaming with it in a serious way.

Has anyone had trouble navigating Steam Big Picture mode with this? It skips around on the interface a lot, and for some reason I can't map the Y button. It'll probably get sorted out; the pc games themselves play just fine.

As a dad I couldn't resist the opportunity to enrage my teenage boys. They wanted to show me how well it works on the 1X, so I fired up Minecraft and acted all impressed. Hah!
