NFL 2019: Week 6

Mike Tanier's weekly take on the NFL

Under the heading of "Hey Jaguars: Don't Get Carried Away By Minshew Mania":

The Saints won that game 13-6 because they are a playoff-caliber team with quality veteran backup Teddy Bridgewater at quarterback, while the Jaguars are a mediocre team whose quarterback, the focus of all the hysteria, is Case Keenum 2.0 dressed as a Blue Oyster Cult roadie.

How dare he.

Also: has Tanier seen what Jaguar quarterbacking has looked like for, oh, a decade or so? If "Case Keenum 2.0" is supposed to be a cautionary warning, he's badly misread the room. Case Keenum would be in a battle with David Garrard for the second best QB in Jaguars history.

Did the people who came up with the Progressive ad campaign featuring Baker Mayfield using the Factory of Sadness as his actual home ever see the Factory of Sadness video?

Draw Play Dave is one of the best football commentators out there.

Unrelated: The Lions ... might be good?

Tanier covers Cam because everyone's looking for a QB controversy and Carolina is the closest thing to one. (Discounting the Titans, because Mariota has apparently forgotten how to play QB.)

Here's Tanier (emphasis mine)

Newton is a battered veteran who has never been popular with a segment of the fanbase and is coming off a poor year. Allen "looks the part" (note how subtly we are handling the racial semiotics) and happened to arrive just when the running game and defense were clicking for the Panthers.

Have I mentioned that the Carolinas were part of the DC fan base for decades until 1995 (and, to be fair, after)?

Looks like GB forgot to show up for the first quarter

With the Jets on MNF next week, maybe we'll get the Sam Darnold meme generator back.

Is that actually Bradley Gilbert or someone doing an impersonation of Bradley Gilbert?

Brett Favre not watching the road when talking to Peyton makes me nervous

"Brett, you're trying to merge between those two semi trucks!"

"You gotta take some chances, Peyton!"

Lotta settling for field goals tonight

Awful call on a phantom hands to the face robs Detroit of a stop and leads to a Packer TD.

most refs: wow let's not make that mistake again. This ref: HMB

Refs just completed stealing the game from Detroit. Holy sh*t. Both of those hands-to-the-face were bogus. The non call on obvious pass interference.

That is some of the worst one-sided officiating I've seen in a while.

Well that was a hell of a thing.

What a sham.

^ this cost them in the end. Way too many drives stalling in scoring territory.

But Lions fans are understandably incensed by the officiating, particularly in those final drives of the 4th quarter.

And on the topic of officiating:

Yikes. I'll take a W but some serious negative karma points.

I think GG mentioned it earlier. The end of the Jets Cowboys game was also ridiculously bad.

Officiating has now solidified itself as the 2019 NFL theme, now that Antonio Brown is in the rearview.

Watching the replays of those calls, it looked like the ref saw the O-lineman's head pop back. That is about the only reason I can think those would even remotely be called. Bakhtiari sold the sh*t out of it, wittingly or not.

If I were an O-lineman in the NFL these days, my head would pop back as soon as any defender's hands so much as brushed my shoulder pads.

After thought.

Lions tried to let the Packers score and instead they hit the deck so they could wind things down for game winning FG.

Could the Lions of dragged the RB. While he was still standing. Into the endzone?

You're getting into the territory of something that may get tried at some point.

The rule for giving up on a play and declaring yourself down is:

Rule 7, section 2, article 1 - Dead Ball Declared

An official shall declare the ball dead and the down ended:

(e) when a runner is out of bounds, or declares himself down by falling to the ground, or kneeling, and making no effort to advance

As written, there doesn't seem to be anything stopping the defense from fireman-carrying the ballcarrier into the endzone, although the referees still have the ability to declare plays dead at their discretion, as we see at the bottom of article 1:

(n) when an official sounds his whistle while the ball is still in play, the ball becomes dead immediately

Myles Garret has as many sacks (8) as he does tackles.

That's maybe something of an issue.

His pass rush grade at PFF is 90.9, 3rd best among edge defenders, and his run defense grade is 58.2, 84th out of 116 qualifying edge defenders.

Speaking of PFF grades among edge defenders, sneak peek at this week's thread: Dee Ford ranks 4th in pass rush grade. Frank Clark ranks 86th.

Well, sure, but it's not like Frank Clark is used to hitting men.

The sport is being ruined by the officiating. It's been bad for a while now, but this year is just outlandishly bad. I'm seeing it everywhere. Everyone is complaining about the reffing. Half the posts of /r/CFB and /r/NFL are about the state of officiating in the sport. It's just destroying any fun when you know the game isn't being decided by the best teams, but by the refs.

Peters from Rams to Ravens.

Now there's rumors of Ramsey to the Rams.

Trade deadline isn't that far off so teams making moves now.

Ramsey trade reportedly for two 1sts and a 4th.

Now I get to cheer extra hard for the Rams to lose games and boost those pick values up.

Rams sure like collecting Jaguar scraps. Dante Fowler, Bortles, now Ramsey.

Goddammit. I don't want that cancer on the team...
