NFL 2019: Week 6

Pages

* Teddy Bridgewater's numbers aren't exceedingly different from what he posted in Minnesota. He's averaging 212 passing yards per game. His 7.0 yards per attempt are right in line with the 7.2 he threw as a Viking. 1.7% INT rate is slightly lower than the 2.0% of his final Viking season. But two metrics in which Teddy has made a sizable jump: his completion percentage (up about 5 points to 70%), and his sack rate (8.9% as a Viking, only 5.5% this year). It looks like like what you would have expected from a 3rd year of starting experience from Teddy, just separated from that second season by 4 years. Quite frankly, a bunch of teams with bad QB situations look stupid for not bringing in Bridgewater to compete for their jobs.

* Dak Prescott looked like he was going to blast right through all of the "should Dallas pay Dak?" doubts at the start of the season. But the slow game against New Orleans, and then the interception-filled game on national television against the Packers, have slammed the brakes on that.

* Derek Carr was sacked 7 times in the team's two losses, and only 1 time in the team's 3 wins. Carr's time-to-throw is among the very fastest in the league - the fastest last year (2.55 seconds), currently 4th fastest this year (2.52 seconds). The difference between the Raiders winning and losing seems to be whether or not the Raiders offensive line can pass block for at least 2.6 seconds. PFF currently grades Carr the 7th best QB in the league this year.

* Here's one of those scheduling things that should not be allowed. The 49ers play against the Rams this week. The Niners have a short week from playing on Monday Night, while the Rams have the long week from having played Thursday Night. Worst of all, the Niners are on the road for this game. A team coming off Monday Night playing one coming off Thursday Night should be avoided, but when it does happen, the Monday Night team damn well shouldn't be the road team, and especially not for one of those all-important divisional games. At least it's just a cross-state game and not a cross-country one, but that's just a bit too much of a scheduling screw-you for a divisional game, IMO.

* Oddly, the other Monday Night team (Cleveland) is also scheduled to play the other Thursday Night team (Seattle). At least Cleveland gets Seattle at home, and it's not a division (or even a conference) game. Still seems like unnecessarily punitive scheduling.

* With another game over a 95.0 QB rating, Gardner Minshew is the first player ever to start their career with their first 5 games reaching that mark. (Fortunately, fumbles don't factor into that number). The articles declaring Minshew as the permanent Jaguars starting QB have already begun.

* Remember when Jamie Collins was lazy trash for years in Cleveland? The guy that missed every tackle? Guess who is the #1 graded linebacker on PFF so far this year. It's our boy Jamie. To little surprise, Collins' grade at tackling is still trash, and by far the worst part of his grade. But he has shut down his zones in pass coverage, and has been a terror as a blitzing linebacker, recording 5 sacks and 6 more pressures already.

* After what Jags owner Shad Khan described as a "heart-to-heart conversation", Jalen Ramsey has returned to practice and will play Week 6.

* Lamar Jackson's passing yardage has declined every week this season, dropping to 161 yards this week (along with 3 INTs) in a squeaker of a win over a compromised Steelers team.

I'm always here for Teddy B praise.

I guess I'm either not a real Eagles fan or a real Football fan, because when I saw my other local buddies posting all the memes about Cowboys doing poorly these past couple games, I couldn't join in. "Uh, Eagles lost to the Lions and Falcons and probably would have lost to the Packers were some of those play calls different. We're not exactly in a position to be mocking Dallas". It's only now that I better understand Philly's stance on the rivalry: who cares how well or bad Eagles are doing, every opportunity Dallas presents to be mocked must be taken.

It just feels petty to me, though. If it was some fun trash talk it'd work better, but the Cowboys hate gets really, really deep and I just can't relate to it.

Poor Foles.

Eagles against Vikings on Sunday. Maybe it's because of my recency into the fandom, but that feels closer to a rivalry to me. I can see Minnesota feeling like Philly robbed them of their opportunity at the Super Bowl in their own stadium, and... I dunno. I see Eagles vs. Vikings and it feels like there's something to prove, like it wasn't enough to actually win that Super Bowl, but to continually prove Eagles are the better team and it wasn't a fluke.

So I'm nervous about their chances this next game. Won against the Packers? Man, I'm shocked, I really am, but I feel like if the officiating had gone down differently it could have been another loss. Won against the Jets? That's like congratulating someone for removing the foil wrapping on the Pop-Tarts before putting them in the toaster. Even then, somehow the Jets defense was able to kill the Eagles running game.

Maybe this lack of confidence is in part why I can't go making fun of Dak Prescott and the rest of the Cowboys line-up.

It's probably too soon to have the discussion, but the Foles salary cap situation will be interesting for the Jags to navigate if they do stick with Minshew.

Nobody is going to trade for an injured Foles at the trade deadline, so the question doesn't begin until the offseason. Foles has $15m of guaranteed salary in 2020, which means there's a lot more cap space to be gained by trading him rather than cutting him.

If they traded him before June 1st, they would eat $18.75m of dead money, but with Foles having a $22.125m cap figure in 2020, they would have a net gain of $3.375m of cap space in 2020, and get him off the books entirely in 2021 and 2022.

If they cut him before June 1st, the dead money would be $33.875m, meaning a net loss of $11.75m cap space. For a team that's already over the projected 2020 cap, losing another ~$12m of space is probably not workable.

If they designated him a "June 1st" cut, the dead money would be $21.375m, netting them a small $750k cap space gain, but with $6.25m remaining on the cap in both 2020 and 2021. That's doable, but the trade option would obviously be a lot better.

For a team potentially buying Foles via trade, the fact that $18.75m of his cap figure stays behind in Jacksonville makes him a decent bargain for the buying team. His cap numbers would be $15.875m in 2020, $20.625m in 2021, and $20.75m in 2022. He's already only got the 16th highest annual average, and removing the signing bonus part would drop him into the 20s. For a QB-needy team that isn't in a position to grab one of the top QBs in the draft, sending a mid-round pick to Jacksonville to take the non-signing-bonus part of the contract off their hands might be a good alternative.

Of course, Minshew could face-plant over the course of the next month and Foles could make his way back onto the field and re-assume the starting role, so it's all speculation at this point. But, if the Jags do decide Minshew is the answer going forward, they're going to want to get out of Foles' contract as soon as possible, to take advantage of the window Minshew on a rookie deal offers. (And for the second straight year, they would be eating double-digit millions of dead money spent on a QB that played only one year of their deal)

Somebody's gonna want Big D!ck Nick. Assuming his collar bone heals up OK, he's probably better than 10-15 current starters.

Of course the Jags could Jags this thing up so who knows, right?

Unrelated: The Panthers are playing in London on Sunday, and several players have worn a T-shirt with a "Keep £ing" logo on it. GET IT? KEEP £ING?!

This franchise is used to having 0 quarterbacks capable of playing NFL football. You can forgive them if they're confused as to how to handle the situation.

Disappointed the Dolphins-Redskins crayon eating extravaganza didn't make the preamble.

Are you actually from Souf Joisey, or did you just move there.

My HS friends & I used to argue of whether we hated Dallas or the giants more. I am clearly a heretic, but for me it's the giants. That's probably only because I've had to live for some time up in the home territory of the vile blueshirts.

The ideal season is one where both teams finish 0-14-2, but if one of them has to win the games between them I would rather it be Dallas.

That Minshew Ringer article is good, yall should read it.

In case it matters, one INT wasn't his fault at all.

Teams are taking out their long passing game and it's hurting the paying game. Course M. Brown got hurt and they seemingly had no answer.

It feels like they're doing the same things and getting worse results, which is the same trend from last year. I'm not sure the fix here, but Lamar's intermediate throws have been awful. More play action maybe? I don't know. I expect it'll be an up and down season with the defense being so bad. Oh well.

Philly fans have a long established hatred of all things Dallas and Boston. You get some NY hate but not a single Eagles fan I knew didn’t root for the Giants against the Patriots in the Super Bowls. The real question is who would we root for in a Cowboys vs Patriots SB. I know I would root for Terrorist Blimp Attack.

So, uh, is the Giants defense Bethea and a bunch of rookies?

And one Jenorous (sp?) Jenkins.

This game is fun so far. Shockingly!

If you like bad offenses.

Dude got shoved from the line of scrimmage all the way back to the punter's kick trajectory. How do you get steamrolled that badly in punt protection?

I certainly did not root for the giants against NE, and I'm an Eagles fan.

I didn't exactly root for NE, but if forced to choose...

Ironically enough, I am sitting in a restaurant in Morris County, and place has a bar. It's full of giants fans watching the NY/NE game on TV.

Just now I greatly enjoyed all the swearing and groaning after that fine punt.

That Jones INT, oof.

Danny Dimes finally strikes.

Man, Rupert Murdoch's had a busy past couple of nights.

*Legion* wrote:

Rookie mistake and you know it. Just holding it too long.

TD pass to Golden Tate was nice at least.

Jones had looked pretty good so far. He seems to be playing like the game isn't too fast for him.

Whoooooooooooaaaaaaaaa!

That didn't look good for Gordon

That jump by Markus Golden for the TD was incredible for a defensive player.

Why was the camera on Robert Kraft when Joe Buck said the word "pampering?"

Ooo, ooo, Erin Andrews should ask Murdoch why he was meeting with AG Barr last night!

That one too, right?

Despite New York's lack of offense, this is still a one score game.

EDIT: Nevermind

Down 2 TDs halfway through the 4th, punting on 4th and 2? What are your doing, Giants?

Hrdina wrote:

Definitely born and raised. But I've only been interested in football the past few years (well, I started getting into it five years ago, I think during the Chip Kelly premiere). As such, I didn't really grow up paying attention to the rivalries or anything else of the sort. So while I've done some Googling to figure out the Dallas rivalry, it's not something I feel in my bones. My general distaste for the city of New York is largely why I dislike the Giants and the Jets, but it really doesn't have much to do with football.

You should force yourself to watch the opening Series of the 2nd half of Super Bowl XXXIX. Watch it enough times until you get real angry and bitter. Then remember the League destroyed everything related to Spygate for “reasons”.

I didn't get that play call either.

The Giants did miss Engram, Barkley, Gallman, Shepard so their offense was going to take a hit. This loss didn't feel that bad since I thought the Giants played well taking all into consideration and Jones continues to improve.

A coworker of mine has her husband and son (both Miami fans) travelling from CT down to FL to watch the game. It's also to play some golf so safe to say the golfing will be the highlight of that trip.
