2019 - 12 Month Pile Program

July Report. Super late edition.

Played Pokemon White 1 and Black 2. Lost my save for Black 2 for some reason. Fell hard in love again. Felt like a school boy again. Checking out Platinum, X/Y, and Sun/Moon. Give me more suggestions. Should I go for Lets Go? Ive heard of Ranger? or Mystery Dungeon?

DQ Builders 2. Second Chapter almost done.

Well, I'm not finishing anything else by tomorrow, so here goes:

Been kind of a weird month for me, I've been a bit all over the place personally and professionally, dealing with some frustrations at work and some emotionally exhausting stuff personally. I haven't finished much, but I've been playing games as escapism a lot, and it has felt kind of all over the place. In particular, I did a deep dive back into Dragon Quest XII's postgame section, which I've really enjoyed.

Goals for this quarter:

Spoiler:

Finish Legend of Heroes: Trials of Cold Steel
Finish Metroid: Samus Returns
Finish Moonlighter
Finish Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight
Finish Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (stretch goal) [on Chapter 4; I'll be done with this by month's end]
Finish Baldur's Gate (stretch goal) [not happening]
Finish or remove 3 2 other games from the backlog [I beat Celeste, but the other games that I finished were new additions so they don't actually help the backlog].

GWJ GOTY Eligible [Record-keeping for December]:

Spoiler:

Algobot (PC)
Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars (PC)
Celeste (PS4)
flOw (PS4)
Flower (PS4)
Invisible, Inc. (PC)
Journey (PS4)
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel (PS4)
Marvel's Spider-Man (PS4)
Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS)
Moonlighter (PS4)
Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight (PS4)
Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken (PC)
The Swapper (PC)
Song of the Deep (multi)
Super Mario 3D Land (3DS)
Tactics Ogre (PSP)
Tales of Vesperia (multi)
VVVVVV (multi)

Second month in a row with no backlog progress, though I'm in the midst of Baldur's Gate and should have that wrapped up early next month. Final Fantasy XIV sucked up most of my available gaming time, but I'm starting to need a break from that.

After Baldur's Gate, we'll see how things shake out. I want to check out some of the PS Now and free Epic Game Store games I've been accumulating, but I also think I'm itching to try Yakuza 0. The former don't count as backlog games for me, while the latter would. We'll see what I'm in the mood for when the time finally comes.

Played:
Final Fantasy XIV
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Nier: Automata

Same as July pretty much.

Soooooo. This summer has been a weird one. August report incoming.

Added:

  • Two Point Hospital (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif) - An unexpected and much appreciate gift from one of the regulars on my Twitch channel. I loved what I saw in the demo and I was going to get it eventually. Just gonna dip in earlier than I thought!

Finished:

  • Little Briar Rose (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) - A bit of a letdown, to tell the truth.
  • Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) - So I haven't technically marked it as completed in my spreadsheet, but I did mark it as completed in Backloggery back on August 1st, which is when I finished my first playthrough. I'm almost done with it, I still have two gentlemen to romance (out of... twelve?). I've also watched the entire first season of the anime (with the same voice actors, *swoon*), I've completely redecorated my Steam profile and I'm planning a huge Twitter thread in which I explain which guys are the best and why, including explanatory gifs. I can't wait to move on to Edo Blossoms. This postcard was sent from the bottom of a very deep, deep Hakuoki hole.

Dropped:
None!

Played:

  • Guild Wars 2 (PC) IMAGE(https://backloggery.com/images/mastered.gif)
  • Mr Love: Queen's Choice (iOS) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - I'm in love with this game. So. Damn. Much. I don't typically put iOS game on my GOTY list, but this one is going on it. You read it here first, folks!
  • Assassin's Creed: Origins (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - Started this last night, and I really like it. So many little improvements and a gorgeous game. I just wish I could hack off Bayek's little ponytail. I hate it. :)

Remaining games: 50 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (48 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Progress (Games): 19 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 5 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) - 16 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 8
Est. remaining hours: 591.5 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (616 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Progress (Est. total hours): 128 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 66 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) + 71.5 played IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - 158 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 107.5

Backloggery is at 22, which isn't great. I'd planned to make more progress in August, but I wasn't in a good place. I missed my kids something fierce (three weeks is a LONG time), and just fell in a sort of lethargy and basically just played Hakuoki and went to bed early. And work was no help at all, with half of my team on sick leave. Hopefully September will be better! (yup, that's me, eternal optimist!)

Oh no, looking back I just realised July must have been the first time I've missed a pile monthly report since I joined the forum early 2016!

I'll double up here to make up for it, though still not much to tell really.

Dropped: Nothing!

August is done and you know what that means? Video Games.
Pretty much anything that isnt a portable gaming system isn't touched at all.

Playing.
Legend of Zelda: Seasons of Ages.

Pheonix Wright: Justice for all. For some backlog work.

Fire Emblem. Tres Casas.

Pokemon Ultra Moon for your 3 DAS.

I havent finished anything again.

The month of August was fair to me, and so I was fair to my games. I played quite a bit, and managed to complete a good number of games as a result. Did still buy too many games thanks to sales and impulse, though.

August report:

Added:
Night in the Woods (PC)
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne (PS4/preorder)

Finished:
Nier: Automata (PS4)

Played:
Grandia III (PS2)

Wasn't sure what to play after wrapping up Nier: Automata. With all the talk around the Grandia HD release on Switch, I remembered that I had Grandia III in the backlog, and decided to go with that. I played maybe 10 hours of it so far. It's OK so far, and unfortunately it looks like the best character (Miranda) has left the party for good. We'll see how it goes.

I was hoping to play A Bird Story last month, and spend more time with Night in the Woods, but alas, that did not happen.

August report~

Added:

Celeste (Epic) - Also free

Beat:
(nothing..*sad trombone plays*)

Made Progress In:
Nier Automata (PS4)
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (3DS)

Planned Games To Beat In 2019

Spoiler:

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4)
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (3DS)
Banjo Tooie (X360)
Persona 5 (PS4)
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (PS4)
The Witness (Steam)
God of War 2018 (PS4)
Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4)
The Witcher 3 - Blood and Wine DLC (PS4)
Resident Evil HD remaster (PS4)
Black Mesa (Steam)
Firewatch (Steam)
Paper Mario: Color Splash (Wii U)
Star Fox Zero (Wii U)
Star Fox Guard (Wii U)
Subnautica (Steam)

In Nier Automata, I'm almost to the point were you can't do side quests so I'm trying to decide whether I want to do them all or if I should make a beeline for ending A. The sidequests in that game are a lot like the original game. They add some flavor but doing them all kind of sucks the fun from the game. And the most important thing at the end of the day is to have fun, right?

September should be a better month for me. I'm a bit more settled in my new position at work and hopefully I'll have more mental/physical energy for videogames. August was just rough.

GAMES COMPLETED:

  • Hahahahahahaha NOTHING

GAMES PLAYED:

  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses
  • Judgment
  • Crystar
  • Astral Chain
  • Oninaki (Demo)
  • Kill la Kill IF (Demo)
  • Cadence of Hyrule (Demo)

SHORT AND SWEET:

Exercise, a social life, and feeling stalled after a point in just about each game resulted in a lot of hours played, but not enough completed games. This does not bode well for September.

THE OVERWROUGHT NAVAL-GAZING:

Spoiler:

The first major change to August was that I had resumed my efforts to exercise, while also trying to return to the coffee shop for writing each Saturday... and then failing to do that for at least two Saturdays in a row. I wanted to stream in the mornings, but taking regular walks before it gets super hot out and reading my Bible daily has also interfered with such attempts. So physical and mental health have been a pretty big thing for me this month.

Even so, it didn't stop me from putting a ton of time in Fire Emblem: Three Houses at the end of last month in a week. Yet once I hit that 25 hour mark, it became harder and harder to keep playing like I had started. I don't know if it was a mood thing, or if it was the game itself. It was becoming easier, and it felt like I was stuck in the same loop. I haven't even hit the time shift yet. I've already hit something similar with Crystar, though far sooner. The game starts out pretty well, but it's pretty obvious what the gameplay loop is and what you're basically going to be doing for the next several hours. I'll be saving more of my thoughts regarding that in a blog entry I hope to write this week, but needless to say, when a game fails to disguise its core loop, you kind of see the hamster wheel you're on a lot more clearly, and that becomes a problem.

Which is where Astral Chain comes into comparison. Put almost 7 hours into the game on Saturday alone, and with what bits and pieces I got on Sunday and Monday between Church and family time combined with Friday, I'm already at about 10 hours in. But despite seeing the gameplay loop of investigation, astral plain, boss, they've managed to mess with it enough here and there that it's far more cleverly disguised. There's also enough different activities in each phase that I'm not just doing the combat. While Fire Emblem kind of has this with the social mechanics, the combat becomes so easy it feels like you're grinding social and grinding battle. It's amazing how much that shift has impacted me.

Judgment, meanwhile, is just... I like it a lot. But with it being the third Yakuza team game of the year it really is more of the same.

Does this mean my time spent actually playing any of these games is reduced? For the most part, know. I feel satisfied whenever I'm done a play session. The problem is that, with the exception of Astral Chain, it reduces the enthusiasm to return to the games, and when I'm done work and socializing I feel like I need to psyche myself up to play something. Not a good place to be at.

Nevertheless, I hope to make some real progress in September. Ideally, I'd have each of these games beat, but I also have Control arriving next week, then there's Link's Awakening on the 20th, and... Checks spreadsheet... Cripes, Daemon X Machina is the 13th?! AND Dragon Quest XI S the 27th?

I'm not surviving this month.

August report:

Added:
A Hat in Time (PS4)

Finished:
Onrush (PS4)
Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 (PS4 - with kids)

Played:
Trails of Cold Steel (Vita)

Almost finished with Trails of Cold Steel and helping my youngest on strategy with the Lego games (get the x2, x4 things first before buying characters--no, really, trust me) took over the bulk of August. Watched the credits roll in Onrush as well which was nice. Lots of pile to go through still and only Trine 4 on the watchlist in the near future.

August Report (Better Late Than Never edition):

Added:
Dragonball FighterZ
Soul Calibur VI
Guilty Gear Xrd Rev2
BattleZone
Nocturnal Doctrine
Apollo 11 VR
Atelier Nelke

Finished:
Soul Calibure VI (kinda?)

Played:
Horizon Chase Turbo
Ogre Battle Lets Cling Together
Beat Saber
Witcher 3
Driveclub
Moss
SoulCalibur
Dragonball FighterZ
RaceRoom

Honestly I had a hard time remembering that I actually played games in August, but looking back I did get a little bit of game time. Most of the purchases resulted from a really good sale on PSN and my lack of willpower. Majority of the time was spent actually on my PSP playing Tactics Ogre. Been way to stressed and tired for big screen gaming this month.

Not really expecting to pick anything the remainder of this month.

I have a metric ton of adulting to do tonight, so I'm not finishing anything. Here's the September report.

Added:

  • Borderlands 3 (Epic) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - A prepurchase I made in a moment of weakness in August. I regret nothing.

Finished:

  • Blackwell Convergence (iOS) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)
  • Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) - Well, I marked it as "beat" last month, but this time, it's well and truly wrapped up. All twelve routes. Twelve gentlemen. With three different endings. I made a thread about it.

Dropped:
None!

Played:

  • Guild Wars 2 (PC) IMAGE(https://backloggery.com/images/mastered.gif)
  • Mr Love: Queen's Choice (iOS) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - Still very much in love with this game.
  • Assassin's Creed: Origins (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - So I managed to give Bayek a haircut. I still haven't finished it. I'm probably nowhere near finishing it, but I like it. It's very pretty. I got to pet tons of kitties.
  • Borderlands 3 (Epic) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif)IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - So back in August, I got corralled into playing this with two French colleagues I ran into on Twitter. It was a bit of a risk, because I'd never really talked to these guys before, even though we do share a few common interests. But we're really getting along and having a blast. Collecting tons of guns. Shooting lots of guns. Selling lots of guns. Oh and explosions. Lots and lots of explosions. They were right on the GWJCC, this is Borderlands. If you didn't like Borderlands before, this game won't change your mind. But it's great stuff if you're a Borderlands fan.
  • Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - Of course. The follow up to Kyoto Winds. Which I'm really enjoying. I consider the two a complete package, actually, and they're actually a single game on some platforms.

Remaining games: 50 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (47 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Progress (Games): 21 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 5 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) - 17 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 9
Est. remaining hours: 646 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (609 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Progress (Est. total hours): 138 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 66 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) + 40 played IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - 188 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 56

Backloggery is... still?... at 22. Okay, still not great, but at least it's not decreasing I guess? Spent a lot of time on AC Origins and BL3 without actually completing them, which isn't helping. Hopefully, I'll catch up in October, and even early November since I've decided to do Extra Life again. Hope to see you all on Game Day (November 2nd, though I'll probably be kicking off on the day before).

September report~

Added:
Batman: Arkham Asylum (Epic Freebie)
Batman: Arkham City (Epic)
Batman: Arkham Knight (Epic)

Beat:
(nothing)

Made Progress In:
Nier Automata (PS4)

Planned Games To Beat In 2019

Spoiler:

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4)
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (3DS)
Banjo Tooie (X360)
Persona 5 (PS4)
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (PS4)
The Witness (Steam)
God of War 2018 (PS4)
Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4)
The Witcher 3 - Blood and Wine DLC (PS4)
Resident Evil HD remaster (PS4)
Black Mesa (Steam)
Firewatch (Steam)
Paper Mario: Color Splash (Wii U)
Star Fox Zero (Wii U)
Star Fox Guard (Wii U)
Subnautica (Steam)

I'm starting to think this just isn't my year to make progress on the pile. Backloggery says I've beat 5 games this year. 5. Two of those are long RPGs though. One being Persona 5 and the other The Witcher 3: Blood & Wine expansion. And currently I'm playing through Nier Automata trying to get all the trophies because why not. My plans for the rest of the year is to go back and finish Kingdom Hearts 3 plus pick up Pokemon Sword so maybe this is just a year of RPGS. The only other game I'm planning on buying in the next 3 months is Death Stranding. And maybe Life is Strange 2 when the final episode hits in December.

GAMES COMPLETED:

  • Astral Chain

GAMES PLAYED:

  • Crystar
  • Control
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

SHORT AND SWEET:

Yikes. Fire Emblem and Judgment are staring at me like abandoned kittens on the sidewalk in the rain. I was hoping to finish off Link's Awakening, but I still have two dungeons left. Due to some financial complications, I'll not be buying much. Luigi's Mansion 3 is a definite still, but The Outer Worlds is no longer a certain thing. I'm just going to try and catch up on what I have and avoid spending money. Almost done editing a video, and I think I ought to spend a weekend or two just playing video games rather than working on things at the coffee shop all day Saturday. Football is also back, so there goes a few hours every Sunday, Monday, or Thursday for games. Once Link's Awakening is finished, I'm going to finish recording footage for Darksiders, then return to Three Houses and finish that. I'm also going to put more attention on Control so that I can return to Crystar and Judgment.

THE OVERWROUGHT NAVAL-GAZING:

None this time.

I lost my willpower this month

Added:
Nintendo Switch
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Golf Story
Untitled Goose Game
Links Awakening
Blood and Truth (PSVR)

Finished:
Witcher 3 main campaign!!!!!!!!!
Tactics Ogre Lets Cling Together (JRPG club)
Golf Peaks (mobile)

Playing:
Witcher 3 Expansion packs
Blood and Truth
Moss
Xenoblade 2
Untitled Goose Game
Golf Story

Progress I'm actually very happy with, Witcher 3 main campain credits finally rolled after playing it since December of last year, and finishing another huge JRPG over the summer with Tactics Ogre I'm very happy with.
Ended up treating myself to new Switch model, couldn't resist anymore. But due to the way Nintendo prices games on this system, I see hard time really growing a big pile. In a week of owning the Switch I probably put almost 13 hours into Xenoblade alone, its amazing how you can find time to do something when your actually excited about it. Couple hours after kids go to bed on the Switch has been nice.
I will pretty pleased if I can manage to finish Goose game, Golf Story and the two VR games, Moss and Blood and Truth by end of October.

September report:

Added:
Drakengard 3 (PS3)
Tomb Raider 2013 (PC - repurchase)
Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness (PC, not included in backlog, I just want to play it to see if it's really that bad)

Finished:
Tomb Raider 2013 (PC, replay)

Played:
Grandia III (PS2)
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood (PC)

I plan to start Dragon's Crown for the GWJ JRPG club very soon (like, probably next weekend), and hope to finish it in October, since it's pretty short. Not sure if I will actually finish Grandia III. I made it to the second disc, but I can't say I'm having a great time.

Gaming time has slowed down even more. It’s a combo of being kind to my arms since I was getting some arm and neck pain and spending time on other hobbies. I continue my slow crawl through Fire Emblem Three Houses and played Blackwell: Convergence.

Not a bad month!

Current backlog state:
91IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) / 25IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif)

Goals for this past quarter: I didn't get to everything I'd like, but I did get through a lot of games! The Twin Wardens would say: "Not terrible, but not impressive." But they're a tough audience. Personally, I'm pleased.

Spoiler:

Finish Legend of Heroes: Trials of Cold Steel
Finish Metroid: Samus Returns
Finish Moonlighter Didn't even return to this. I have a feeling I'll find my way back in a few months.
Finish Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight
Finish Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (stretch goal) almost! I am just searching for the motivation to finish
Finish Baldur's Gate (stretch goal) Nope! I'm still in Chapter 4
[/s]Finish or remove 3 2 other games from the backlog[/s].

Goals for Q4 2019:

Spoiler:

Play and Finish Dragon's Crown Pro (PS4) - Haven't started
Finish Dragon Quest XI (PS4) - as in, completely finish and platinum. I'm not too far off by percentage, but probably need at least 10 more hours.
Finish Tactics Ogre (PSP) - as in, just see the credits roll. I'm not too far here either. Maybe 5 hours?
Finish Baldur's Gate: EE (PC) - I'm not super close, though I have a feeling this could go quickly if I applied myself
Finish the DLC for Marvel's Spider-Man (PS4) - I've done one of the three CTNS packs.

That's good for now!

GWJ GOTY Eligible [Record-keeping for December]:

I've been in a gaming no-man's land for most of this year.

New job, new focus, new sleeping pattern, new challenges with the kids. Between all that, most nights I've just sat in front of YouTube on my PS4 and fallen asleep.

I've bought 3 PSPs (don't ask).

I've purchased an OEM PC, and the means to juice it up for gaming (psu, ram, gfx card) but haven't had the time to assemble it all.

I fell down the raspberry pi rabbit hole, and emulation. I now have a retroflag MegaPi, and GPi case, both waiting on assembly...

I see a pattern forming here.

So, I guess I'm posting as a two point catalyst.

1. To actually make something of these purchases and opportunities to play

2. To get back to being a more active member of this community. It's been way too long.

I'm just glad you're around, m0nk3yboy, gaming or no.

Oops, late September report.

Purchased:
Need for Speed (PS4) - purchased because my oldest son (23 already, ack!) wanted to play co-op with me and when your son asks you to play co-op, you buy the game

Finished:
Trails of Cold Steel (Vita) - JRPG club

Played:
Need for Speed
Rogue Aces (Vita)

I have been in a big ol' gaming funk that goes along with many life issues. Work is stressful and sucks, wife went on a two week trip overseas so I was a single dad of two elementary school boys to add a bit more stress and some other mental health issues made for a slow September. I have done a bit of dabbling in quick games on the Vita but have only turned on the PS4 twice in six weeks to play Need for Speed with my eldest son. Trine 4 is coming out soon and that might get me back into the swing of things along with life starting to settle down a bit. Sigh.

Must have been while you were kissing me...

September addition - Plants Vs Zombies Battle for Neighborville (For the boy)

Played some Dragon's Crown and Tactics Ogre for the JRPG club. That's about it.

Still on the board games far more than video games at the moment. There've been a few added to that pile for sure.
