Welcome folks, and happy Ashes retention day! You may all celebrate by smashing an imperious 211 or going for a two-ball duck.

For most people reading this, September marks the turn to autumn, and all its melancholy golden brown flavours. But Down Under, it is the beginning of spring and the rebirth vibes are just starting to kick in. Like the first juicy green buds that emerge after a thawing frost, this week’s release list has sprouted some big games to kick off the season.

Path of Exile: Blight is not a comprehensive expansion, but it sprinkles in some new ingredients to keep the soup tasty. There’s a spoonful of tower defence, a dollop of new gear, and a drizzle of new oils to anoint your weapons. Add in some revamped mines, character class tweaks, and leaguey stuff, and you got a stew goin’. This one is pitched at existing players, to keep ‘em lining up for more.

Borderlands 3 swaggers in after 7 years away and asks, “How about a BILLION guns?” The former looter shooter champion is now the contender. Has it still got the chops?

Break out the keg, because here comes Gears 5. There’s something very NFL about Gears. A new game with exciting new features in its single and multiplayer modes brings all the promise of the start of a new football season with some promising new recruits. Finally, the Xbone gets a decent exclusive.

If shootin’ or spammin’ doesn’t do it for you, why not try the other big franchise release this week: Star Wars Pinball. Just don’t go using the Force to tilt the cabinet. There’s a Trials Rising expansion: Crash and Sunburn, with new levels and some American football skins. Last week’s chunky 6GB patch to my copy of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was paving the way for the arrival of Assassin's Creed Odyssey: Discovery Tour - Ancient Greece. It’s free for owners of the game and lets you wander around the map in tourist mode, unhindered by guards or mercenaries. Plus, in-game characters can give you guided tours. Sounds the version of the game my kids will be playing for a few more years.

I’ll throw a GOTW to Gears 5. It looks more polished and sure of itself than Borderlands 3. Gears and beers!

Here's the list, now in release-date order!

Looking at Blasphemous this time around.

It's GreedFall release week!

I'm waiting on reviews to see if Spiders' increased budget means we get a good game from them or another AA jankfest.

I had forgotten about this! Looking forward optimistically, will likely get it at some point.

Looks interesting, I'd like to demo it on the xbone before buying.

Fired up Gears 5 thanks to XBGP PC. First time I've played a Gears game since the original for a few hours until my roommate walked in with Bioshock. I quit that game without even bothering to save or anything. We'll see how this goes. It certainly looks way better than the colorless blah of the original.
