Gears 5 Catch-All

I tried multiplayer last night; is Warzone only available for custom games? I played a playlist that was usually TDM (yuck), and Escort or whatever and KotH once each.

You should try Destiny. Great shooting mechanics.

I tried Escape and Horde last night- Horde was...time consuming and a little boring. I kinda wished they would have stuck with the style Mass Effect had - 4 rounds.

Escape was..tons of fun!

Been having a ton of fun with the campaign but was a little annoyed when we tried 3 player as one player has to be the robot. It's more like 2.1. It reminded me of the Star B*tch Mario galaxy jokes.

I also did 3 player and had the exact opposite experience. The person playing Jack loved it and said it was a refreshing twist on the gameplay.

What am I doing wrong? I have GamePass, I have installed the game but when I try to start it is says "Gears 5 isn't unlocked yet visit the store to see when you can play it."

Grr...

I think it's only for Gamepass Ultimate folks. If you haven't converted your sub, that's the issue.

The other thing is that I had to manually search the store for Gears 5 Ultimate and install it. It wasn't under the Gamepass section of My Games or whatever.

I had to select the ultimate edition, and download it from the store.

I got very mad last night, playing this. There is a boss, an Icemonster is all I'll say to avoid spoilers, that is..pardon my french, total bullsh*t. It takes quite some time, and is full of instakills deaths, that leads to a short unskippable intromovie every damn time you die.

Its infuriating when things like this are part of the bossfights. I wish they were skippable!

Oh boy, I'm so not looking forward to this if it's coming up soon at the end of the Act I've been playing. I've died plenty already. I wonder if it's possible to adjust difficulty down for just a certain fight and then bump it back up after.

End of Act 2, so you have a ways to go

I will try to dial down the difficulty as well tonight, and hope that removes the instant deaths a bit. That what I will try tonight, because this fight aside, I am enjoying the game very, very much!

Yeah, that's right what I'm about to walk into the next time I boot up I think. I just took care of some open world business that featured a LOT of dying for rewards of questionable value...had to call it before I got into the last remaining story mission.

Working my way through Campaign right now and enjoying it. Gears is one of those franchizes that I have also consumed all the other media (books and comics). Going to get the most recent one because I feel like there is something needed to connect the characters a bit more than I'm getting so far through story. So d-l'ing now and will listen while I work today.

Tried a bit of Horde and it was fun. I am going to install it on PC as well if there are any folks there that are looking to group up for any game mode.

This game gets me right in the gibbs!!! (j-ibbs or g-ibbs you decide lol)

Look at all that juice!

Let me know how it goes! and if you have any tips!

Trying to hold off getting this as I’m still playing remnant and BL3 is out this week. I don’t have an Xbox so 60 bucks is hard to take on at this time.

$2 for two months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and you can play Gears 5 (and more than a hundred other games) on PC. Am I helping?

I had exactly the same reaction! That one was the worst...you had an unskippable cutscene followed by a lengthy hike to get to the place where there was some other cut-sceney action before you were killed again. Ugh.

Seems odd...usually there have been fairly convenient checkpoints prior to each battle. Since I'm clearly close to that point I'll report in soon.

Helping to make my decision easier. Thanks!

I turned down the difficulty setting to the lowest (Weakling, or something like that) and managed to win the bossfight in only two deaths, and 15 minutes of grueling combat, where my GF has holding her breath in terror of what would happen if I kept dying!

Anyways - that helped a bit, since it took away most of the insta-deaths.

Insane mode is stupid this time around. In the old games a buddy of mine and I would go through the hardest difficulty slowly and painstakingly but, in this one you cannot be downed once. Then, with the instant kills that a lot of the enemies seem to have, it just takes away a lot of the fun. It used to be hard and puzzle like but, if you messed up there was a chance to fix it. Now it's just frustrating because of the occasional slip up, you lift your head out of cover at the wrong time, restart, an enemy's buzzkill bounces behind your cover, restart.

Ok, yeah - I found THAT ice boss with the little unskippable bit. Definitely annoying! As for the fight, I got the pattern down fairly well after a few tries but kept screwing up the execution. It's one tough fight solo. It took a good 30 minutes of trying (with a few real bad wipes towards the end...AUUUGH), but I finally got it without moving off Experienced.

The key to the fight for me (Act 2 boss spoiler follows):

Spoiler:

I didn't realize up until stumbling across it in the fight that you can shoot thinner ice with regular bullets - you don't have to use explosives. Shoot ice, shoot boss to induce charge, shoot weak spot, rinse and repeat (dodging quills he throws at later stages).

For me, the key to the boss fight in question was to do the secondary missions for the act.

Spoiler:

Because of these, I was able to upgrade Jack to the point where his Flash ability freezes enemies. I had Jack flash-freeze the boss, allowing me to shoot the weak spot. Boss recovers, I run and keep my distance until the Flash recharges. Rinse and repeat. Sure it was a long fight, but this made it fairly easy. I only died once because I didn't dodge in the right direction.

Great idea that I completely overlooked...and I did all the secondary missions.

Spoiler:

I'm awful at changing abilities during fights so I just run with shock traps. :P

Thats a great idea! I did all the side missions as well, but just didnt think of this!

The developers approach Horde for this as an endurance trial. I too would prefer a shorter variation of the Horde model. Besides ME3:MP (man I could go for some of that right about now) I liked Firefight in Halo: Reach a lot because of how customizable it was. You could make a game last 10 minutes or 10 hours depending on which options you picked.

This thread has been pretty quiet, getting the feeling this Gears might be a miss. I played for a bit but Borderlands 3 is going to keep me diverted. Dunno, that game just feels a lot more fun and engaging. Getting pretty downer vibes from the community for Gears. I was pretty excited for it, have really enjoyed the others. It’s too bad it released against Borderlands, I think a lot of people have already moved on to that game.

The cool thing is it will be sitting in the Game Pass vault for when I have an empty gaming plate!

Personally really enjoying Gears so far. Just started Act 3 in the campaign and having fun with the new side mission structure. Escape is a lot more fun than I was expecting and the new Heroes for Horde mode make me want to try all of them. Have not played any vs yet but looking forward to getting to that too.

I think Gears 5 is great. I personally skipped boarderlands 3 because the gears community is bigger now and I just need 1 person for boarderlands coop.

I havent beat it yet but I honestly think this may be my favorite Gears game so far. It's beautiful, the shooting is even more dialed in, I love how smooth it is at 60fps (playing on XB1X), the story is great (IMO the best writing in the series), the open world stuff is great but not overwhelming like the AC games, etc...

I haven't touched the multiplayer stuff yet but will after I finish the campaign. I bought BL3 but haven't started it up because I'm just enjoying this game so much.

I hadn't put more than 2-3 hours into a Gears game since Gears 1, but last week I played through the first 3-4 chapters of Gears 4 (seemed solid) before plowing ahead into Gears 5. I'm liking it a lot and holy cow is it gorgeous on my 4K TV through my One X. I'm on Chapter 4 of Act 2 now, and have played a round of each type of multiplayer. I find the movement awkward and, much as I love active reload, I do get frustrated by how quickly I empty my gun at times--it feels like I'm always reloading. But I've dropped the difficulty to Casual or Beginner or whatever they call it, because I just want to ride this rollercoaster to the end, I don't want to need to replay any of this after getting killed, so I'm okay with that.

Is there an obvious difference between the Lancer and the Retro Lancer? I'm always a little puzzled about what to do when carrying a lancer and seeing a retro model on the ground...I prefer to keep one of my weapons a lancer, and generally am inclined to keep whichever I will have the most ammo for (at least, I think they use different ammo, even though that doesn't really make sense).

I have a couple of story questions about the end of Act 1 and early in Act 2:

Spoiler:

Late in Act 1, when Fahz reveals to Del that JD was responsible for a civilian massacre due to him overreacting to some mob violence, a)is that something that happened in Gears 4? and/or is it something the player is supposed to have known already? b)is that a reference to the events that are the subject of that memorial you come across in act 1? c)or, is he actually saying JD is responsible for some of the massacre that you have just discovered, in the theater? (I don't see how that could be the case, but maybe I missed something that would make that work).

Similarly, in the first few chapters of Act 2, after JD shows up to help Kait and Del, and some time has passed and JD has a shaved head and I think a prosthetic arm, is that supposed to be the first time they're all seeing each other again since the end of Act 1 when the Hammer of Dawn gets out of control? The initial scene played like that to me, but Kait and Del have some subsequent conversations about how JD has changed and him being buddies with Fahz now, and I'm not sure whether that's supposed to be all based on the same 2-3 minutes that we just saw or if it's understood that they've all been working together again for a little bit.

Finally, at this point, mid-Act 2, what exactly do we know about Kait's connection to the locust? I think I've heard that the reveal from Gears 4 was that Kait's grandmother was a locust? Or is it that her grandmother had a baby with a locust? (And was that, like, a science experiment, I assume, and not some sort of unusual romantic situation?) Having just seen the scene where Kait discovers children who were experimented on with locust-y stuff, I certainly have my suspicions about other ways in which Kait may have been involved in this stuff, but I'm not sure what I should already know had I played Gears 4 and/or just paid better attention to the story thus far.
