Portland, Oregon Meetups

If you (or anyone on here!) are interested in salmon fishing in the Yaquina River out at the coast, I'll be out for 3 straight weeks camping in Newport (last week of August and first two weeks of September) along with a few weekends here and there. More people on the boat ups chances of catching something, and it's usually just my dad and I. Surprisingly, it's hard to get people to make time.

Here's the boat from last year. I know I posted a picture of it in the something you created thread:

If anyone's interested, just shoot me a PM. Portland meetups are still going to be pretty much off the table for me these days because I work seven days a week between two jobs. and the limited time I get off goes into vacation/fishing.

Welcome to the party. Watch out for the marauding bands of free range kombucha-addled ukulelists.

Aw man, reminds me that my favorite Climbing gear/ukelele store closed last year:(

Tuffalo, I don't know if I've mentioned it but it looks like you did a fantastic job building that boat! I may be interested in a fishing expedition. If you don't mind, PM me what kind of gear I'd need to pick up to participate.

No gear! Just would have to get a day license/harvest tag if you don't have a fishing license and tag and understand that the chances are pretty low of getting a salmon. We can comfortably have 5 people in the boat fishing and cram 6. My dad and I can basically fish four poles ourselves, so anyone who wants to come mostly just gets to sit around and relax. Just need warm clothes and sunglasses/hat. We really would like a full boat any time we can because it's mostly just my dad and I and then we can only have two poles out. PM me any days you'd like to tentatively schedule (last week of August and first two weeks of September plus all September weekends), and I'll try and make it work out. Things are always slightly up in the air until a day or two before you go.

Are we interested in doing something for International GWJ Day? It's looking like October 19th is the most likely date. The last few times we've tried this, everyone's been too busy or gotten Portland anti-social.

I am interested in an International GWJ thingy!

Side note: I'm guessing tuffalobuffalo is out fishing by now. I was in Newport earlier in August and the weather was wonderful. My wife and two older kids went fishing, but had no luck. Hope it goes well!

Out fishing but might be done by then. Super busy in general, so I won't be able to commit to anything yet.

I will not be available that weekend unfortunately.

I'm interested if newbies are invited.

I’m antisocial ( )but I’m going to be out of town during that time anyway. Renting a house on the coast for my birthday for much of October.

That sounds rad. Have fun!

I could be available October 19th.

I'm down for GWJ day on 10/19. I don't see anything on the calendar yet.

I hope someone can step up and help organize something for GWJ day. Since I can't make that one, if no one else can host / organize that day and things fall through, I'll try and host another time after that.

Alright, let's do this, then. Anyone have any good ideas for a location? The obvious choices are Guardian Games and Ground Kontrol. I am really not hot on either place. Ground Kontrol is way too loud for socializing, and Guardian Games is a little too....much? I dunno, the warehouse thing and their sense of interior design makes me feel kind of agoraphobic.

Other options:

Lucky Lab
Decent place for a meetup, even if I'm not crazy about the food or the beer. The west side beer hall is a better location than the east side.

The Zipper
Multi restaurant thing off Sandy with a solid bar and a bunch of really good restaurants and a big central area. Can get a bit crowded on the weekends.

Rose and Thistle
Sort of hidden English-style pub. Not sure what the crowd's like on the weekend. Food is English, which is...not the greatest business decision, but the beer's good.

Moon and Sixpence
Another English pub with a decent amount of space. Another place really pushing that very narrow English cuisine market.

Base Camp Brewing Company
Fairly decent space, with a lot of outdoor seating. Can be kind of crowded.

I'm also fond of some of the smaller game bars around town like Game Knight and Cloud Cap, but they all seem potentially a little small.

Any other suggestions?

Rose & Thistle!!! I work a couple blocks away and used to live right by there. I can probably make it if it's in October!

I’m already occupied on that day but I second the Game Knight recommendation. I used to go there all the time but don’t live in that neighborhood anymore. It’s a nice, cozy place with a decent menu.

At this time, I don't think I have any conflicts. I'll pencil myself in.

I'll throw out an option for hosting in Salem. Board Game cafe here has a private room for rental. Seeing as I'm one of the few down this way, I don't expect folks to be interested in making the trip. I'm down for anything in the Portland area.

I'll leave it open until Sept. 19th and make a decision then.

Something else to keep in mind. My wife and I have a 2200 square foot home in Beaverton. We have multiple tables and seating for dozens. We have a TV with a Switch and PS4. Depending on the day we’d be happy to host. We could order in food or pot luck or something like that. You all could have the run of our house, meet our cats and we could make use of the space to play board games, MP games, etc.

Downsides are the transit options aren’t great and restaurants are better equipped to provide food, etc.

Upsides are that no one is going to kick us out, we have plenty of space across 2 floors, so we could have MP games (Towerfall, etc.) going at the same time as board games. Also quieter than a restaurant, obviously.

I totally understand if a restaurant is preferred, but I remember having a good time at Tuffalo’s place and would be happy to try and host in a similar way.

Yeah, that would be great! I was just suggesting bars/restaurants because my place is still in a state of semi-construction. But yeah, I'd prefer that to having to make a flag that says shalam baskur and introducing myself as "kazooka" in public.

Oh, and specific to this discussion if we did settle on 10/19 we could host that day.

That is a great offer DSGamer! If transit is an issue for someone, I would be happy to provide a ride.

Hello! It's apparently been three years since I logged in last (What?!) but I fondly remember the meetups at tuffalo's place and would like to join in on the big GWJ day. We also live in Beaverton so that would be perfect for us.

I've been a lurker for ... a while. But I'm rather interested in joining the meetup on October 19th -- regardless of where it is.

And I could also provide a ride for a person or two. I live in SE Portland near the 50th/Foster/Powell intersection.

At DSGamer's house sounds great if that's how it goes down. I will definitely start to plan on this for October 19th.

That's crazy - you live fairly close to me.

Thanks for taking this up DSGamer. I'm glad someone can host on international Goodjers Day in the area.

Seems like the consensus is DSGamer's house on Oct. 19th. I'll set up an RSVP thing so that we don't have to individually e-mail everyone who's interested. (If anyone's got a good suggestion for that sort of thing I'd like to hear it. I signed up for one site that appears to be an e-mail password harvesting operation, and EventBrite wants me to put on a concert)

edit: Also, DS, if you need help setting up/cleaning up, let me know.

Thanks for the offer, kazooka. I’ll definitely take help. I think a good starting point is figuring out what food to bring. I’m happy to pick stuff up or order something.

A potluck could be easier. First off, though, perhaps we should use that form to figure out if there are any dietary restrictions, etc.

I can probably bring some smoked salmon!
