Civilization VI

I tend to agree with BadKen. For me Civ 6 is a big and bloated board game with too many uninteresting minigames within the larger game. None of those minigames make much of a difference and you can choose to ignore many of them without any real consequences. When you realize this you also realize you're wasting your time playing it. FWIW it took me >500 hours to get to that realization though And I did have a bit of fun along the way.

Wow... I'm actually complaining about a game having too much content.

I think Gathering Storms is one of the best Civ expansions there is. But Civ 6 as a package is still really flawed.

Never used CQUI, there is a smaller UI mod that is usually updated very fast, and do some of the same.

Yeah.
I don’t mind there are many different systems. And being able to ignore some and focus on others would be good - like playing a civ where you ignore religion and focus on tech or vice versa. That would be a meaningful choice. Or focusing on Ages, but ignoring Climate Change, with the benefits and consequences it brings.
Problem is, that is not really how it ends up working. Too many of the systems are poorly implemented in the game and makes very little difference.
With the Ages system as the greatest offender imo, but the climate change is also quite weak ( though I haven’t played after they increased its effects in the April patch)

Care to elaborate and save me from any temptation? I probably havent played Civ in a year, havent looked too hard at the expansion.

The World Congress and climate are two things I don't consider fun at all. The AI is not sophisticated enough to make the World Congress interesting. To me, adding climate effects makes it feel like unless I pay close enough attention, I end up fighting the map itself. It's hard enough for me to settle suitable areas and grow my civ without my carefully chosen areas changing out from under me.

I also really don't like the notion of consumable resources. One of the things I liked most about Civ VI was that initially it did away with a lot of the tedium of strategic resources. If you had iron, you could make swordsmen.

Gathering Storm has too many constraints to juggle, and that's not fun for me. And because of the added complexity, the UI is even worse at keeping the information I want to see at my fingertips. I know there are mods, and some of them are quite good, but that's just one more thing to break when there's a patch.

Gathering Storm ruined the game for me. I think I'm finally done with Civ. After loathing Beyond Earth a few years ago, then this, I've lost confidence in Firaxis.

Play XCOM2 with War of the Chosen to get that confidence back!

For me, Civ VI just came along too close to Civ V. I played A LOT of Civ V so the thought of playing VI just never seems that appealing to me. It's still installed, though, along with all the other Civ games that are on Steam. So maybe in a few years I'll get around to putting some time into this one.

I'm still enjoying Civ6 a lot. With a newborn in the family, i'm alternating playing Civ6 and Rimworld with my Steam Controller in the living room.

I've enjoyed what each expansion has brought to the game (although I wish some things they would stop re-DLC'ing every new version, and just include in the base game from the start.)

I can't get into XCOM2 despite multiple tries. I *loved* XCOM (and the pre-reboot older titles), but just can't get with XCOM2 at all. I even went and bought WotC to see if that would help... nope.

June update is out. Patch notes here.

Hi folks! Thinking about (finally) picking up Civ VI for the Switch. Question about cloud saves -- assuming I have a vanilla game all around, will that cloud save be available to play on other platforms where I have the game like Steam or iOS? (I don't have the game on any other platforms yet, just thinking about the future; likely going to get an iPad Pro sometime soon as well).

tldr: are Civ VI cloud saves platform agnostic?

Cross-posting with the Video Game Deals thread, but Civ 6 Gathering Storm is $19.99 on Prime Day today. That's the cheapest I've seen it yet. Steam key.

Just as a heads up, Amazon warehouse workers are doing a two-day action to demand safer/better working conditions and a living wage. They are asking people not to engage with Amazon or any Amazon service yesterday and today. Just something to bear that in mind as you make purchasing decisions.

New patch coming out soon, plus a mysterious new multiplayer mode they're teasing.

Have they fixed it so war isnt bullsh*t yet? Seems there are glaring errors in the game that haven't been corrected. I recently played 3 or 4 more games on Prince and they all went the same way.

* Friendly AIs suddenly agree to declare join wars on me in cooperation with unfriendly civs
* Said warmongers never actually send any units against me
* I take the opportunity to go punish them a bit, usually pillaging tiles, killing any units I find, and taking a city or two
* The rest of the world decides I'm a warmonger for the rest of the game, still never does anything about it.

Do you have Gathering Storm? The Warmonger stuff was replaced by Grievances there.

I didn't get Gathering Storm on account of my unhappiness with the other issues. It doesnt sound like that doesn anything for a continuous failure for warring civs to actually go to war (like send invading units and stuff) or friends turning to enemies thanks to bad diplomacy.

I've had more actual conflict with barbarians than any other civ in VI.

I do enjoy most every other change they made to the series but it's currently a 3X game. They left out Xterminate.

Edit: Oh and the religious stuff is interesting once, but too tedious to enjoy after that. They should have made it possible to simply disable religion.

You can disable religious victories when you create a new game.

They have really upped the quality of their patches. Very nice. This one seems weaker though. But more map types is great.
There is still an endless list of stuff they ought to improve.

Also, expansions coming to the Switch version by the end of the year! Good news for anyone like me who plays exclusively on the Switch

beanman101283 wrote:

Yep, doesnt stop Peter from hitting me with a dozen missionaries every turn.

I think you could go into the config file and change all the civs desire to pursue a military victory to zero, but... You shouldn't have to, and that might cause some wonkiness.

So, BR mode in Civ now, right?

They upped the cost of religious units so no one can flood anyone else with missionaries, and especially not on Prince. If you hate it that much, make a bunch of Inquisitors and kill the two or three Peter sends over now and again.

I'm just very eager for them to add in the Expansions to the Switch version so I can take advantage of cross-save.

I'm so pleased they've done something like this and it's very heartening to see others (Divinity: Original Sin 2) doing this as well--hope it's a trend.

So about that...

It's a last man standing Mad Max flavored mode with a slowly shrinking red death zone.

Full patch notes are here.

So Civ Battle Royale?

I was quit before I saw that. I'm twice as quit now.

LOL
Can't believe I was right...

I never play MP on Civ games (because I suck obviously) but it sounds fun at least to try once.

Wow, game design is easy now. Just slap Battle Royale in it.

Sorry was too easy.

Oh my...

If tried to start this game many times, but something blocks me. I've tried play throughs on YouTube, but my game develops differently from the gameplay in the video.

I know I'll love this game, but I really not get into it. I think after 4 hours of satisfying gameplay I"m in. And I need to play this kind of game beside the FPS and Sims I'm playing online. For instance Cities Skylines gives me a lot of tranquility, but I want to step into the real thing and Civ 6 is the real deal for me.

Any tips?
