Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

Sheena is rated PG and that had all kinds of naked Tanya Roberts on a zebra. And I believe that Temple of Doom was the first movie to receive a PG-13 specifically to avoid getting an R rating.

Hah, I was ready for that one. I was also ready and did a pause potty break (stealth fast forward) through the possession scene where Sigourney Weaver is rolling around in bed and seducing Bill Murray and says "I want you inside me". I did however forget the scene where Dan Aykroyd is lying in his bunk and a ghost appears above him and moves down his body then disappears but his pants then get unzipped and well...luckily it went over my kids heads. I don't remember that scene from my childhood.

Ghostbusters had several scenes that 14-year-old me found very...intriguing.

What I always thought was my first R rated film in a theater, which my folks brought me to in 1977, was Smokey and the Bandit.

It was PG.

Now I have to see if Porky’s was PG, too.

Yeah I think PG 13 was made for films like Ghostbusters.

Yes and Red Dawn was the first PG 13 movie. I know about Temple of Doom and the MPAA.

Just saying Ghostbusters fits in there with Poltergeist and several other 1984 or earlier movies that are definitely more than PG.

There's a Geeks Who Drink trivia night coming up Sept 12. Might rewatch the whole thing and try to play.

FTFY

No, the final season is starting this fall.

I forgot where I was. Sorry.

I tried 2 anime series on Netflix this past week:

Ultraman was painful. I gave it a full 9 episodes to get better and it just got worse. The "awkward teen hero" trope is so old and this is one is even more poorly written than most.

One Punch Man, on the other hand, is a delight. How can Netflix only have 1 season?!

Because Hulu has exclusive rights to season 2 in NA. At least for a time.

I just watched that too and loved it. It made me steal my mom's Hulu info so I could watch season 2.

Are there any other seasons?

Not yet.

My wife and I checked out the first two episodes of the Dark Crystal and it was.... okay. Not great, but not terrible. The muppets are pretty rough to get used to at first (probably because they didn’t change anything from the movie from over 30 YEARS ago). They are very stiff and can’t emote at all whatsoever.

The story itself is all over the place too so far, but the voice acting is top notch.

In case any US folks missed it, Netflix is getting episodes of the current season basically as they air. The first episode is up, new ones every Friday. Hooray, I won't have to pirate them!

I’m on ep. 4 of the Dark Crystal series and loving the hell out of it. The amount of work that went into making it is amazing to me and being a huge fanboy of the original I am as giddy as a little schoolgirl to be immersed in the world once more. I was worried about it being a prequel but it seems to be setting things up nicely so I am just enjoying the ride. My 8 year old son started to watch it with me but he got scared pretty quickly which is strange because content wise it wasn’t (at that point in the episode) any worse than most of the kids shows he watches. I think the puppetry gives it a realism that bothered him and is probably the thing that appeals to me the most.

If I didn't know going in Simon Pegg voiced the Chamberlain Skeksis, I would never have guessed.

After four episodes I can safely say that the new Dark Crystal series is one of the most stunning displays of imagination Ive seen in a show in ages. Absolutely brilliant on every level. Damn.

I'd bet they would all get Rs now. Granted, they were all before PG-13 existed, but if left the way they are I think they would still get Rs.

Spaceballs is rated PG. I tried to watch it with my son when he was about 8yo. Within the first 30 minutes it has boobs and Rick Moranis yells M.F.er. Luckily my son was completely bored with it and didn’t even notice when I turned it off.

We’ve watched - or tried to watch - a couple of 80s PG ‘classics’ on Netflix the last couple of months with our 7 year old and, well had to turn of them off due to the volume of swearing in all of them. The Goonies and Back to the Future were especially bad at it. Over here in the UK they were definitely all dubbed before release to cut it out, I saw them all and believe me there wasn’t nearly as much swearing in the UK versions when they came out.

The BBFC (the UK classification board) rated Gremlins a 15 on release, there was a bit of controversy about it at the time as the studio really wanted a PG rating, but refused to cut the film. Jaws however was a PG - which surprised me but my Dad remembers going to watch it on his own before deciding to take my brother (7 on release) or me (4) to see it. He didn’t.

Both films were re-rated as 12As on theatrical re-release in 2012, a classification that was created for Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film with Michael Keaton.

Poltergeist was also a 15 over here too. And remains so.

BttF and the Goonies are classics though. And it really is just swearing. Even the "violence" in Goonies is almost comical. A couple of guns but no one is shot. Swords, but no one is stabbed. Booby traps but no one is smashed.

That's what I said, "booby traps!"

I think we quit the Dark Crystal last night after episode 4.

We wanted to like it so much. We watched all the previews, behind the scenes, and trailers. Maybe we built it up too much? The muppets are definitely the primary problem for us. We could probably overlook that though if the story and dialog were compelling. It just didn't click for us. I'm honestly befuddled why it's getting such good reviews. Maybe the nostalgia? My wife loved the movie and has a higher tolerance for shows like these and she was the one who bailed us over to Carnival Row.

Nah man, I am as anti-nostalgia as they come. Sorry you didn't enjoy it, but I respectfully have to disagree with your opinion in a major way, this show is the real deal. Sounds like for whatever reason you couldn't get over the puppets - but the show is based on this artform so I guess if you can't clear that hurdle, it's just not gonna work for you. I find it a hugely compelling alternative to CGI, I think it is unique and fresh and totally works. Of course nothing pleases everybody, as it should be.

If you have enjoyed Stranger Things, make sure to check out Erased. It is about a Japanese manga artist named Satoru who finds he has the ability to time travel. It is pure Japan in style, make sure to watch it in Japanese w/ English subtitles.

My family recently had a Japanese exchange student, and stumbled onto this while trying to find something for her to watch one evening.

I had some issues with some leaps of logic the ending took, but over all a very enjoyable series.

A PSA since Netflix didn’t see fit to scream in our face about it, like it clearly should have:

The new season of British Bakeoff is being added as it airs in the UK. Only one episode so far, but it’s off to a great start as usual.

The problem I had with it is that it doesn't even acknowledge the advances made in puppetry in the last 30 years but went straight back to the bobbing up and down for walking and no facial rigs. After watching things like what Laika does and the new muppets and sesame street, they do a much better job bringing life into the puppets. It's kinda jarring because everything else in the show is astounding and beautiful. Then a puppet tries to emote and it all falls apart for me. I am glad you enjoyed it, but unfortunately didn't work for me.
