Post a Picture - Something You Created!

Added a new thing to the DMs Guild! Another of my Pay What you Want mini dungeons

Legacy of the Mechanist.

"Beneath the rubble of the River District’s reconstruction zones, the legacy of one of Neverwinter’s more...eccentric mages still waits to be re-discovered..."

A short post-Phandelver dungeon for levels 5-6

This is the second in a series of quick mini-dungeons and encounters, all based around the “mysterious map” discovered in the lair of Mormesk the wraith, during the finale of The Mines of Phandelver. Legacy of the Mechanist is a short underground one-session dungeon, designed to work on it’s own, or to act as a potential link allowing the PCs to move from “Mines of Phandelver” directly into “The Lost Laboratory of Kwalish”.

As such it is designed for a group of level 5-6, but should be easy to modify for groups of higher or lower level as required simply by changing the danger in combat or the deadliness of any traps. This booklet contains everything you need, including battle maps, new creature statistics and tokens to use on online RPG systems such as Roll 20.

Includes custom maps and tokens!

Does anyone have any info or tutorial resources for putting something up on Roll20?
How customizable is the rule system?
Or is it just that your create theme, lore and setting but gameplay is using Roll20 rules?

I mentioned in the Pathfinder thread that my recent experience with Pathfinder: Kingmaker video game has really brought forth some creative juices on building a PnP system of my own. It has core roots in the ability to make the character you want to make by focusing on unique feats per weapon type, different types of spell totems/foci and dex vs str based fighting. (I will probably have to come up with other names since its not like dex fighters will lack str and str fighters will lack dex)

But I really want it to be where you have an idea of how the character looks and will be rewarded with power you expect and power that will be a joy to discover. Is that doable on Roll20? Or would I be better off with something like kickstarter?

Drivethrurpg might be more what you're looking for maybe? I've not really looked at Roll20 as anything other than just for playing games so i've got no idea how you would go about building/publishing a new RPG through it.

For the record, the "Lucid" game i'm (sloooowly) building is just offline in indesign at the minute, and when i've got it mostly written i'll probably do some testing and then eventually probably go the kickstarter route.

If you're looking to just do worldbuilding type stuff for now, then Worldanvil is probably worth a look.

Made a game called DotBox. Decided to pay homage to the Game King in the tutorial/demo gif.

but why just take a photo of an empty corner of your room?

Yeah I don't see anything in that picture either, except carpet with some light impressions on it...

(forgive the spammy post!)

I have revamped and updated my patreon page a little, putting more of a focus on creating illustrations and designs specifically for use in tabletop role-playing games, such as 5e Dungeons and Dragons, etc.

If you know anyone who you think might want some cool maps, handouts, encounter designs or the occasional discount on the modules and supplements I make, please do me a favour and spread the word of this page around. I could really do with the support right now, and the more backers I get, the more cool stuff I can create! Thanks!

I also have some products already uploaded to the DMs Guild for those that might not be aware..I'd appreciate some downloads (at least for the PWYW stuff!) and constructive reviews
The link to these can be found

I would love to explore that cave IRL. Even if it did have beasties hiding inside.

Another shameless promo, sorry!

So i've gone and set up a shopify store, connected to the printspace creative hub, through which i can hopefully sell some prints of my more artsy work. It's up as a trial for the moment, but should you feel you want to own a print of one of the drawings i've uploaded now, that would be helping me out a LOT! (AND it would help test this store setup to make sure it all works and that it's worth the effort!)

Anyway, the store can be found here for the next week and a bit while my free trial is active. Whether I keep it active after that will depend on how this little trial goes I think!

Great looking site Pyxi. Unfortunately for my wallet, once everything is said and done, for the Cyberpunk Devil it would be 75 pounds, so right around $100 to ship to my doorstep. A little much at this moment but I'll definitely keep an eye out for more items in the shop.

yeah sadly the printing is in the UK so postage is probably a killer, no worries.

Brexit will probably tank the £ into the ground though, so give it a few weeks

Been making a bunch of physical monster tokens for my new, live D&D sessions, since i can't afford any of those fancy miniatures!

Printed out some 25mm circle tokens using appropriate art, stuck them down onto wooden counters of the same size, and then stuck those into the upper half of some coin capsules. They look really neat! (and i'm going to use the bottom halves of the capsules to glue another batch of paper cutouts into them, doubling the number of tokens available.

Right now i've got most of the beasties and NPCs from Mines of Phandelver covered, and the next batch will be the last stragglers and then starting on the creatures from the Essentials pack quests. I've also ordered 10 50mm capsules so I can put some larger beasties like venomfang together.

oh, by the by, forgot to mention, i realised that the postage was set up wrong on the store - it's actually a flat rate of around £6 , not whatever it decided to set it at by default (like, £20 or something) . So just so you know it should be a good bit cheaper than initially marked.

Those look great.

That is a busy dungeon. The princess family just had its first dungeon crawl together DMed by our eldest. It went very well. Even our you-tube obsessed youngest paid attention for the whole thing.

Talking about busy dungeons!

I've finished turning the first seven days of my inktober challenge into Part One of a 31 level megadungeon, which you can download for free from itch.io as "pay what you want".

Do take a peek and spread it around to anyone who might be interested

I'm imagining you playing this whilst balancing back and forth on a Unicycle...

Very nice!

The Lunch Box Build: my portable RetroPie build with separate wired controllers

So I wanted an arcade to replay all of the games I couldn't afford to beat when I was a kid. I've got a friend who has one of those full-size multi-game arcade machines in his basement, but I wanted to go the DIY route to see if it would be cheaper.

My original plan was to build a convertible stand-up arcade machine: a "bartop" that could optionally be mounted on a stand for traditional arcade play. Over time I decided it would make a better party game machine if it could hook up to any normal widescreen television.

(Entire Flickr album here)

1. The Raspberry Pi

I went with the 3B+ because at the time it was the most powerful option. Once I got my first set of arcade controls (from Focus Attack), I began testing directly through the GPIO.

RetroPie is a pre-built Linux image with multiple emulators that let you play a variety of old platforms, including old stand-up arcade machines.

2. Controller Input

The first step in deciding *how* to write the controllers to the Pi was counting the inputs. With an 8-way controller, 6 action buttons, 1 coin button, 1 start button, and 1 utility/hot-key button, I looked at standard cables/connectors that supported at least 13 wires. In the end I settled on VGA because they are ubiquitous. You can find VGA cables in lots of different lengths and Amazon carries a simple VGA breadboard which let me do all of my wiring without solder.

My original case was a Batman pencil box. I liked the look, but not the lack of space or the cardboard sides. It served as a working prototype though.

IMAGE(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48877375688_013dc6aab8_m.jpg) IMAGE(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48877922606_cc98e928ff_m.jpg) IMAGE(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48878108307_69eca84e17_m.jpg)

3. The Controllers

The prototype was pretty basic. It was a cut piece of pressboard shelving on top of a crude box. (I didn't cut any of the wires because this wasn't the final layout.)

IMAGE(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48877376978_c3f1f94c83_m.jpg) IMAGE(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48877376023_8a4bb03fac_m.jpg) IMAGE(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48877911836_4415b029ed_m.jpg)

With that tested, I constructed two different controllers with different form factors to see which features I liked and which I didn't.

The Mark 1 design was intended to give a very generous amount of surface area without fear of accidentally hitting a button you didn't mean to. The base was 16 inches with an arc so that it would sit on top of an straddle the legs if held in the lap. It'd 1/2" MDF so it has a decent amount of heft. The front corners are angled to sit perpendicular to the wrists for comfort. All surface edges were rounded on a router, then painted and finished with oil-based polyurethane. The result was a smooth, rugged surface with an (unwanted) slightly yellow tint due to the polyurethane. I picked the neutral gray color in case I wanted to graphics (decals) later on, so they could be white or black.

The Mark 2 was much more compact but with this one I tried the traditional finish of 1/4" plexiglass on top. Instead of T-molding though, I simply routed the edges of acrylic & MDF together with a round-nose bit. Wiring was tougher with the Mark 2 because of how close all the controls were. (I originally located my utility button too far center where it would have blocked my VGA breadboard. I filled in the MDF but you can see the extra hole cut into the plexiglass.)

4. Final Controller Design

In playtesting, we found the Mark 1 sat well on the lap, but as a whole the top surface was far wider than it needed to be and gave no benefit. The Mark 2 acrylic top was a great smooth surface, but the controller itself was too small to rest on the lap. It tended to shift left and right between the legs.

The Mark 3 retained the base from the Mark 1 but cut 2 inches off the width of the top. Instead of polyurethane, it used the same plexiglass surface as the Mark 2.

5. The Case

Unsatisfied with the pencil box, I tried to figure out what kind of box would be better suited. I wanted something with more room and I had ordered a flush-mount USB socket extension cord that simply would not work with the cardboard sides of the pencil box. So something with metal sides, and that would let me get flush-mount HDMI and power sockets. It hit me then that maybe an old-school lunch box would do the trick. And hey, maybe I could find an arcade themed one?

There were a few options to pick from and in the end I settled on the Midway Gauntlet tin lunch box from Amazon. On the front (handle side) I mounted the HDMI socket. The right side has the power socket. On the left are the extra USB sockets for a keyboard or other peripherals. The interior is rather crowded, as I did not cut the cables for the USB power or the USB extension cables. I simply didn't want to screw up splicing cables together, so for now all those cables are just tied up in loops.

(The cuts were all made with a Dremel and I did a pretty lousy job of them, IMO.)

6. The SD Card

Don't do this to your SD card. Your Pi will not like it. I managed to snap it while pushing components into the case.

IMAGE(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48877377023_0876e50ed2_m.jpg)

7. The End Result

In the end I'm pretty happy with the result. I'm not sure it has enough room as-is for 3rd and 4th mini controllers which probably won't be VGA since there will be fewer connections.

Nicely done! It’s beautiful!

Quentin that is SICK. Wow! That is so good. Gauntlet was the right choice.

Ooh, a non-quote-is-not-edit double post.

Props to QStone. That is way more work than I would put into anything game related. Anything physical that is... I guess I've put in similar amounts of work with some of my video let's play serieses.

Why isn't that the plural of series?

Thanks, guys. Sometimes it’s good to have a project.

I made a silly Halloween theme for my stream.

Take my like, ya filthy animal.

My girls typically cross stitch while we watch movies and shows, so I decided to give it a shot with a project I'd find appealing. Those of you who haven't played Overwatch might not recognize this, but it's the icon of one of my favorite heroes to play.

That’s dope! I tried cross stitch once, before I knew I needed glasses, but you can imagine how that went. Over the years I’ve entertained the idea crochet. Specifically this method of creating small 3D soft figures that are filled with soft stuffing. I should look for a YouTube tutorial.
