No Man's Sky Catch-All 2.0

Well, my save is royally screwed. I tried to add an abandoned ship to my collection and my old ship ceased to exist. Its model was still there, but I couldn't interact with it and I couldn't summon it. When I reloaded the save, even the model was gone. So I was stranded in the middle of nowhere without the ingredients to repair my new and only ship.

So I loaded up last year's save file and played with that for a while. It has better stuff anyway.

So, VR players, am I missing something? I have inverted controls turned on, but when flying it is not inverted. This makes piloting an exercise in frustration. Extreme frustration. Is this is something that I just do not recall when playing in pancake mode?

I didn't change the controls at all and they seemed to work as intended... ie. pull back on virtual joystick to pitch up, push to pitch down. Maybe their "inverted" means 'inverted from default'... which is already inverted?

K something did seem pretty odd here. "pull back to pitch up" works great in VR without needing to turn on "inverted" setting. However if you then switch to non VR and use the dual-shock controller, to get "pull back to pitch up" behaviour you have to turn "inverted" on. Am I dreaming? I'm on PS4.

You are not dreaming. This is the exact behavior I encountered, and it's why I am simply using my DS4 to fly. I'm sorry, but that virtual HOTAS is garbage. It's far too sensitive, managing the throttle is a nightmare with either all on, or all reverse with no middle ground, and you can't even hold the right stick vertically for a neutral. Even looking at my hands in the game while flying made me queasy as the hands on sticks are not in the same position as my hands IRL. Add in the fact that it is insanely difficult to manage shield recharges, rolls, and firing with the Move controllers and I just "NOPED" right the F out of that. Maybe they'll patch up control changes to it, but for the foreseeable future, I just have 3 controls out when I play. Move in my right hand, Move in my left hand, and DS4 on my lap.

Geez, I haven't even unlocked an exocraft in this save game slot yet. What's driving one of those like in VR?

I haven't tried the virtual HOTAS on PSVR yet, but with my Odyssey+ controllers I've enjoyed it for regular flight. Admittedly its the worst virtual HOTAS I've played with so far, but maybe playing with such things in other games has biased me in favor of using it here. I also haven't tried combat yet, though it will hard to be worse than combat with the DS4 was at launch I suspect.

I'm enjoying the space combat more than I ever did (a low bar to be sure). Turning my head to track the bad guy when he's not in front of me is a game changer.

Anyone know how to get the atlas pass recipe now?

I completed one of those infested building terminals, and was given the choice of reward... I took the “recipe”(I forget) choice, and it showed me a research tree - Atlas pass was one of the branches. It gave me 2 “points”, that was enough for the Atlas 1 and the Atlas 2. The tree also had the rare stuff like - organic catalyst, thermic condensate, chromatic mirror...

Thanks.

So, you WILL find smaller or greater issues, but you can be sure they will be, in most cases fixed. The controls issue will of course be fixed. They have released 8 or 9 patches already since the latest large update, so it will get there.

Oh yeah. I've played Vermintide 2 since it launched on steam. I know ALL about new patches breaking the game in increasingly new and implausible ways.

You’re not alone - that’s a current known bug.

Can someone explain how to save the game? I see buttons for loading manual or autosaves in the option menu but if there is a button to quicksave immediately I can't find it because my keybindings menu is still blank. I started off on a hot planet with red plants everywhere and that was neat, but the graphics settings were still on default settings and I had to restart the game to change things. So I did and the game only gave me the option of generating a new profile which dumped me onto a snowy Alpine planet instead.

Not impressed with the ultra-minimal main menu either, would it have killed them to give me an options menu without having to load into the game first?

The game autosaves whenever you exit your spaceship (except in certain edge cases like bring in a freighter you don't own). Later on you can also save manually with save beacons (buildable tech).

Manual and auto saves don't overwrite each other, but the game only keeps one of each so manually saving when in your base is a good idea.

Agreed, sooo many games do that and it drives me nuts.

Hey they just added an "exit to desktop" button on the main menu in this patch. Back in my day, we had to load into a game and wait to all the shaders to compile before we could even exit the game! You kids with your steam shader caches have it easy!

Patch yesterday seems to have resolved many of the bugs I was personally witnessing, including the dreaded death plunge through the floor of the space station near the multi-tool vendor. I didn't get a chance to run any Nexus multiplayer missions, but several of the guys in my voice chat party did and seemed to get through without any of the constant crashes or other bugs we were having over the weekend.

Has the way we get drop pod coordinates changed?

So far, I’ve only been able to buy the coordinates from traders. (About 8hrs into my post-update game)

Yeah, you either have to discover drop pod coordinate data randomly in a cargo drop, or buy it from a vendor. Or, you can just wander a planet aimlessly and hope you spot one.

Wow I just got the free freighter. That's a lot of new game it just added. Seems like it might mostly be one of those idle games? Just send out the fleet and the'll come back with random stuff? Is there more to it?

Also can't you build a space station? I suppose the freighter might sort of be a mobile space station but it looked like the set of rooms you can build is pretty small. Might just be locked.

Do I have to build and maintain a planetary base or can I put all my stuff into a freighter or space station of some kind and use that as a mobile base? Packing all my stuff into the Cyclops was my favourite part of Subnautica.

I remember putting most of the base-essentials in my freighter - especially the storage containers. (Pre-update)

I found this video about adding power to a base really helpful.

On the down side I don't think you can build a portal on your freighter. On the plus side as Wink_and_the_Gun says you can build storage rooms there. Then build the corresponding storage crate at any of your bases and the goods you store will be available to you at both the base and the freighter.

Freighters were implemented on a previous update - I don't remember if it was NEXT or even before that. As a whole, the game has added a ton of features and things to do since it first launched.

You can acquire a free freighter by saving it from attacking starships after warping into your first several systems. The captain of the freighter will contact you and invite you to the bridge where he will offer you command after you destroy all attacking pirates. The number of slots and class of the offered freighter are random, but "drop" rates of higher class ships is tied to the economy level of the system you are in.

Once the event launches, you can accept control of the ship and receive it for free or turn it down, at which point you will encounter another freighter-in-distress at some point the future (several hours of real play time and/or numerous warp jumps) and have the option of taking command of it for free instead. You can continue to reject command of freighters until you find a desired design and/or class, but once you accept a free freighter, they will no longer be free and freighters are tremendously expensive.

Tip: if you like the design of the ship, but you would prefer an A or S class (freighter classes only affect the number of storage slots), reload a save from the previous system and warp back in. The freighter-in-distress will be there again, but you have a chance of acquiring a better rank with more storage slots. Take note, this can take some time if you are aiming for A class, but especially for S class. It's not unheard of for players to have to reload their game and redo the fight for up to 12 hours or more just to encounter a single S class, but I can usually find an A class in under an hour.

No, you can't build a space station, but what a freighter is and does:

1.) Mobile base. You can build a base inside and since freighters can be summoned, you now have a base that can be called directly to your location above the surface of any planet you are currently exploring. Storage, refining, pretty much whatever you can do on a surface base, you can do here.

2.) You can acquire a fleet of up to 30 frigates (each frigate after the first, which is free and comes with your new freighter, must be purchased and they are expensive), which can be sent out alone or in small groups to perform to various missions and collect resources and currency for you. Mission timer continues to run even when you are logged out. To acquire new frigates, fly toward a non-player fleet. As you get closer, icons will appear on your HUD indicating which can be purchased. Fly toward the icon until you are contacted by the captain - he/she will ask if you would like to purchase their frigate.

3.) Storage depot for your space ships - you can have up to personal ships and they will all be in the launch bay waiting for you.

4.) Long-range multiplayer transport. You can't pilot the freighter directly, but you can use the galaxy map to jump from system-to-system with or without your friends onboard. Freighters have better warp range than starships.

5.) Merchant/ship trade center. NPC pilots will land on your freighter for you to trade goods and ships with.

6.) Additional storage. In addition to whatever storage containers you build on them, freighters have their own inventory tab that can be accessed even when you are not onboard. You can always move items from other inventories into your freighter's inventory, but must be on the freighter to remove items from its inventory.

Previously, a freighter was required in order to summon exocraft, but you can now summon exocraft anywhere on a planet upon which you have built an exocraft pad. The exopad does not have to be nearby - just somewhere on the planet.

(Deleted. Whoops!)

So I just teleported to my base and the whole thing was gone without a trace, so I feel everyone's pain. After a brief google it sounds like there's no real fix, so build stuff you care about in your freighter I guess? Though some of links mentioned freighters disappearing as well, so... I guess the best course is probably to, uh, gee there's the doorbell.

In other news though, check out this absolute unit of a lad:

I spent about an hour working on my power system at my planetary base yesterday before jaunting off in search of my scientist. My first jump produced a "Imperial Star Destroyer" class freighter in-distress. So, I ran off to save it for my free freighter on my new save. First offered freighter was a C class with 23 slots, so I rebooted my previous save and... the power system that I spent over an hour building up was gone, but the warp fuel materials I spent about 10 minutes harvesting AFTER I finished the power system were still in my inventory.

So, the downside is I lost an hour of work and my resulting power grid. The upside is that after about 5 reloads of my game save, I ended up with a 34-slot A-rank very similar to this one:

Pro-tip, remember to always upload your base after changes. Your base state and your save state are not always in sync.

And that freighter looks awesome. I want one.

I hear that my dude, the other night I spent a couple of hours reloading saves to scum up a nice A/34 imperial star destroyer. If that sucker disappears I'll definitely be shelving this game -- until the next big update, that adds player-run political parties and a system where to date and marry NPCs

Huh I assumed that uploading your base meant making it available to populate other worlds, but I suppose not. I haven't seen anyone else's in mine.

That's just the "baby" Star Destroyer. Here's one of the even larger "Super" Star Destroyer models:

And protip - that model with the six whatsits on the side is the largest they go. I might have wasted a little bit of time because I thought it went up to seven. (There's one other model for capital freighters, that looks kind of like a cruise ship, where having seven visible segments is the max size.)
