Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

If I were going to pick 3 of those games myself, I'd take the top 3, Zelda, Slay the Spire, and Hollow Knight. I've played all of the games on your list and those 3 are fantastic. Each is deep in its own way, offers its own style of gameplay that is nothing like the others in the set. Each are top games in their genre.

These would also be my 3 recommendations from that list.

From what I've gleaned it seems unlikely that I would finish zelda and hollow knight. Or am I wrong? I don't know what the typical playtime are.

Hmmm, that may be true. According to howlongtobeat.com, Hollow Knight is 25 hours for the main story, Zelda is 50 hours. I spent about 50 hours in Hollow Knight doing most of the optional stuff, and my Zelda save is over 100 hours. It really depends on what you want to get out of it.

I keep waiting for a Switch game that I feel like playing for more than an hour to come out. Maybe Daemon X Machina?

From that list, Zwickle, I don't know if I could pick a definitive 3. The Switch has so many games that you're likely to get a large variety of favorite games lists.

My top 3 would be:

BOTW
Mario Odyssey
Fire Emblem: Three Houses

But I also really like to love the following games:

Towerfall
Dragon Quest Builders 2
Lumines
Katamari Damacy
Super Mario Maker 2
Celeste
Pokemon: Let's Go
Captain Toad
Valkyria Chronicles 1 & 4
Golf Story
Abzu

And many others

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a pretty amazing game, and I heartily recommend it, though you need to enjoy both the turn based tactical combat of a Fire Emblem game and the social interactions and day/month time management of a Persona game.

Totally. The Switch has a mind-bogglingly various library.

I can see how someone might buy it as a Zelda + Indies machine.

My wife surprised me with a Nintendo Switch as a birthday present. How wonderful! Mario Odyssey (physical) and £30 eShop credit. Excellent!

If it isn't the newer "red box" model and assuming she bought it after July 19th, consider taking advantage of Nintendo's program to trade it in.

I would add Mario Kart and Smash Bros to that essential Switch list. There's still a lot of fun to be had in single player too, unlocking things in either one. I've barely touched online in either but still got my $60 worth out of both.

I would offer this alternative. If tough and somtimes frustrating platforming or boss fighting is a little iffy, swap Hollow Knight out and put in Into the Breach. I loved Hollow Knight and bounced of Into the Breach, personally even though I originally found Hollow Knight tough to get into.

The 3 best games on Switch for me also. Hollow Knight is just majestic in every sense from exploration, tight controls, amazing boss fights & a world that is unlike any other you've seen. A true masterpiece.

Slay The Spire is pure addiction, the brilliance of that game can't been seen in videos, it just seeps into your soul, until you think about your next run, then your next run & just another go before bed. You can modify your play style in so many different ways & the card combos can be truly delightful, it really is genius.

BOTW is just a beautiful mixture of well thought out puzzles, far reaching, varied, beautiful lands that give you space to enjoy & take in the atmosphere, some really good physics & so many minor details it blows your socks off. It really feels unique & throws out a lot of open world tropes out the window.

The library is really impressive: so much that I see it as a portable PS2/3 machine; just to name a few of my favorite titles:

* Final Fantasy XII
* Katamari Damacy
* Okami
* Assassin's Creed III
* Dark Souls
* Dragon's Dogma

And then some that I'm excited to try again in the comfort of portable mode:

* Alien: Isolation
* Witcher 3

Now if only a port of Deus Ex: Human Revolution would somehow appear... *chef kiss*

Speaking of Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest is coming on September 27.

Oh hey, Torchlight II is coming on September 3. Did that ever come out for the other consoles? I held off on getting it on the PC because I liked the original better with a controller, but I eventually caved when it got super cheap on a Steam sale. After that I stopped watching for a console version.

It isn't. But that's okay. Were it more than a boost to battery life I'd possibly be scrambling. As is, for an odds on perma-docked household, it's a fine fit. She also got a good deal, and I'm a sucker for sentiment.

My wife also let my mum and my sister's in on the surprise. As a result I got an additional third party controller, a carry case, and a joy-con charge station, not to mention Crash Bandicoot Trilogy. Good times!

I think a lot of stuff from this morning's presentation looked neat, but the only one that really intrigued me into remembering its name was Eastward.

Yeah, my Switch library is huge. I get excited for games when they come out and then just never really play them. I’m not sure why.

Oh man I remember gawking at gifs of this on Twitter like two years ago.

So pretty!

I think that was a rumor that Nintendo denied?

Oof. You're correct. sh*tty of them. I feel like going to Best Buy or wherever to patrol the games department and warn unknowing parents.

Looking for a Switch couch co-op recommendation to play with the wife.

Previous games we’ve enjoyed (various platforms):
Overcooked 1 & 2
Nearly all of the Lego games.
Snipperclips
Kirby’s Epic Yarn
Torchlight 2
Dr. Mario
Rayman Legends - Just enough to get the collectables, speed runs got frustrating

Doesn’t like any fighting games (Smash Bros), prefers co-op instead of versus.
Doesn’t like any 3D games. Was able to do Portal 2, but that was on the edge.
Doesn’t like platformers, especially those with any jumping puzzles.

Tried Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, didn’t really hook her.

I think Death Squared might be one to try. What other suggestions should we look at?

Thanks!

So out of the showcase I'm interested in Eastward, Spiritfarer, and Sparklite. I remembered Spiritfarer from E3, so either I hadn't seen the other two before or I've forgotten about them. Keen! Ori is also great news, but I've already played through it on PC so I'm unlikely to pick up another copy. I'm holding out hope that it means the sequel might come to switch at some point though.

Diablo 3 is really good on the Switch.

In that vein, you might look into Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. I know the first two were good co-op fun, though I haven't heard if the third one is up to snuff.

Towerfall is mostly a PvP game, but you can have two players play the campaign co-op.

Last weekend I was hosting a party and somebody fired up Baba is You. Only one person was holding a controller, but the whole room really got into thinking about the puzzles and shouting out suggestions and it turns out it was a great group co-op game.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is so much better in co-op than it is when played solo. The AI for the characters you're not controlling is mostly adequate, but the game is meant to be played with friends.

I felt that the Towerfall co-op felt very much like a tacked-on thing, but I highly recommend it if you have a chance to play the 4-player vs mode. It's probably harder to convince people to try than Smash, but it's a very rewarding game when everyone is shooting arrows at each other.

What about Mario Kart? You're technically racing each other, in addition to the AI, but I have had a lot of fun with that.

Both Mario Tennis and ARMS can be played together, but I don't think you can progress through the campaign like that.

For co-op I see you said Kirbys Epic Yarn, but not Kirby Star Allies. There's one to try out.

Full Metal Furies is side scrolling brawler (like Castle Crashers) and puzzler. Don't pass on this one because you've never heard of it. They botched their marketing big time. The game is great and was built around co-op to the point that if you try to solo it, they make you pick 2 characters and switch between them. Some funny dialogue, too. Made by the guys that did Rogue Legacy.

Collection of Mana is out there, if you want a retro ARPG. Includes the never released outside of Japan 3rd game. You just have to get through the intro (~1hr?) Secret of Mana and find your 2nd player before you can do multiplayer. Not sure about the others.

Most of what I've heard about Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is that it is good, but definitely not great.

Would it be okay for a 9 year old?

I sure think so, Garion. Some of the battles are hard, but it’s got a nonviolent art style and a range of difficulty among the classes.

Play with me? I bought it to play with Tomaytohed here on his recommendation, but always have a hard time with schedules. My night times are still dominated by young kids.

Damn, full metal furies looks awesome. Now I just need friends locally who would play.

To be fair, we're pretty miserable about scheduling a time to play.

With my wife, we're in a pattern of working out the larger game puzzle before going after the next boss. I will say, they scale enemy numbers to the # of players, and so some encounters can be easier with only 1 player, and vice versa. I've played single, 2, (and some) 3, and (and less) 4 player and the difference is noticeable when replaying levels.

I still want to get 6 players going in Towerfall. Sadly I missed my best chance a couple weekends ago.

Cool, thanks for the recommendations. Definitely several I’ve never heard of before.

I'll give you the tldr in spoilers:

Spoiler:

Switch revision has significantly improved battery life from 40-70% more play time.

Unit runs ever so slightly cooler.

Screen on new unit has red tint. Could be case-by-case considering I've seen the same complaint about recent OG Switch units.

Unit performs ever so slightly better by being more consistent and getting 1 or 2 fps better performance.

Battery life is the real winner here.
