NFL 2019: Preseason / Training Camp

Picked up a copy of this Jags lithograph:

Pretty sure the artist took some slight artistic license with this. They're in the 1995 inaugural jerseys, but you can clearly see Natrone Means (a Jag in 1996-97) in the huddle. The uniforms switched from Wilson (no logo on sleeve, like this picture) in 1995 to Nike (swoosh on sleeve) in 1996, so if this was in 1996 or 1997, I would expect to see the swoosh logo. I also couldn't find any evidence that the team wore the inaugural patch in any game in 96 or 97.

The artist page claims 1997, but I don't see them in those jerseys at any point in 1997.

Oh well. Doesn't matter. It's got Santa Maria legend Mark Brunell and that's all that counts.

Chiefs wrapped up camp today. Seems like the fans have a particular player they really like.

Well there were a bunch of Hunt and Hill jerseys that needed hasty replacements

Ouch!

Probably not good time to mention I already have Hill on my Madden 20 MUT team. Mahomes to Hill is freaking ridiculous.

Hill is obviously the most threatening WR on the roster (pun, sort of, intended), but, I really think Watkins is going to have a monster season. With a year in the system and a contract year on his mind, he is looking to get paid, and there is not a better situation in which to put up stats for himself. Now, he just needs to stay on the field. He has come into camp game shape, and could not appear to be more focused on the task at hand. I think he scores double digit TDs this year, if he can stay healthy.

Ringer article on Frank Gore. The guy is a machine.

The best Frank Gore stat out there: every season in which a team has had Frank Gore on their roster, that team's leading rusher at the end of the season was Frank Gore.

I'm glad Ryan Leaf has recovered and is able to join in on the jokes.

Good for him, bad for other teams.

What's the bigger number; TD receptions, or games played before his next suspension?

So, AB's replacement helmet? Failed certification.

Guys, I'm starting to think the Raiders might not be very good this year.

And the next decade. Someone has to take over for the Browns until the Browns Brown.

Rat Boy wrote:

Gee, maybe *this* week, Hard Knocks will suggest the team isn't totally stoked about Brown not ever practicing.

Maybe they'll also post tweets from the fake Ian Rappaport account that Peter King accidentally retweeted, too.

So, and hear me out on this…what if Andrew Luck has been dead for years and the Colts are just trying their best to keep up the facade?

Yes, it's The Draw Play, and you should go read it. Bonus points for references to Settlers of Catan, the Simpsons and an old Kevin Kline film

Also ...

Spoiler:

... and this is news to me but The Draw Play artist did a comic with every teams NFL logo re-imagined as dicks (and I don't mean Richard). This is a very NSFW link: (here)

Afterburner files a new helmet grievance. This may actually kill Hard Knocks before it kills the Raiders.

Another Freddie quote:

Freddie Kitchens wasn’t sure he’d ever get this job. The 44-year-old had spent his first 13 years in the NFL as a position coach, overseeing tight ends, running backs, and quarterbacks during his time with the Cowboys and Cardinals. Before last season, Kitchens had never gotten a shot at being a coordinator, let alone a head coach, and he could sense that his chance was dwindling. “I knew that it was becoming more and more difficult to get one if you didn’t [lobby] through the media,” Kitchens says. “You had to sell yourself out to get a job or get an opportunity to get a job. I knew if I ever got in front of someone and spoke my plan, I liked my chances. I just never got in front of anybody.”

Baker Mayfield is out there bashing the Daniel Jones pick by the Giants.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of the pick. But Mayfield is getting incredibly big for his britches already.

Yeah kinda can't wait for him to get struck Browns by reality. (getit?)

Baker has a long history of saying sh*t that's too big for his britches, which is why some people love him. I think he would've made the comment this time last year or five years ago. Just how he is.

Also, NY Post article about it? Seriously? Find yourself a better link next time.

Where else am I going to find my news with small words and big pictures?

I think between Baker and Odell, the Browns should really focus on themselves and stop the Giants talk.

Shut your mouth! The Browns failing to live up to expectations is going to be epic. Don't try to rob those meltdowns from me!

This is true

Goddamn does Frank Caliendo do the Gruden voice scarily well.

Diva gonna make diva comments.

You gotta read between the lines a lil on this one though. Ignore OBJ's ego, act like he never got into a fight with a net, the sh*t he's saying makes sense in terms of who is in charge. That's why he's saying he isn't taking shots but "just speaking facts".

Gettleman gave OBJ that contract but that was before he and Shurmur had him playing on the team for the season. All they knew was offseason OBJ, who wasn't the level of cancer that Eli Apple was, and at that point you gotta pay your stud WR. As the original article says, the reason OBJ believes the trade was personal was because he said sh*t outloud and was fined by the team. In context it lands a bit better than in the Deadspin pull quote article: OBJ figured from week 5 on he was a goner and that's how things shook out.

All of this seems in line with Gettleman and Shurmur. Gettleman likes RBs and to draft d-lineman. Shurmur is a huge grump with a diva WR. You said sh*t to the media, Odell? Not good. Bye bye diva, welcome nice kid QB. This all makes sense to me. It might actually all work out for the Giants, but let's avoid telling players they shouldn't say this stuff, it's what makes things interesting. Everyone repeats the same tired lines to media ad nauseum. Baker and OBJ are telling people how they actually feel. Flipping finally!

Now the Browns need to put their money where their mouth is even more. Let them make their own beds and lay in them.

The Chiefs' Legion of Zoom just got a notch zoomier.
With De’Anthony Thomas’ return, Chiefs just picked up an already fast pace

On a team with a glut of speed, the Chiefs have gotten even faster by signing De’Anthony Thomas, who was on course to switch to track and field.

Had he not gotten the call from the Chiefs, who were looking for a wide receiver and special teams standout to replace the injured Marcus Kemp, Thomas might’ve instead broken the tape at a finish line or two.

Thomas was working out with the idea of running in meets during the indoor season: the 60-meter-dash, to be specific.

And thus, the so-called Legion of Zoom has grown by one. Thomas has played with fleet wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins and cornerback-turned-running back Tremon Smith. Add to the group rookie speedsters Mecole Hardman at wide receiver and running back Darwin Thompson, and now Thomas’ sprinter’s speed ... suffice to say this unit will be trouble for opponents.
