Rebel Galaxy Outlaw - Privateering-All

I am now installing.

Just from an observational standpoint, this game is following the cycle of hypehypehypehype followed by middling reviews and 'hey manage your expectations'. I'm convinced to wait and watch some streams.

So far this morning they've been uninspiring.

Looks like the downloader is struggling. I'm going back to sleep.

The discord channel said something about restarting Epic to make sure it appeared.

This will be an interesting test of the store front, with a highly anticipated exclusive to see if they meet demand.

I've had no problem installing all the free games the last few months very quickly.

Installing now via remote desktop. Long day of work today too. Sucks.

Anyone know if Epic has cloud saves? I do play between a desktop and a laptop.

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw: Quick Look

There is a setting for cloud saves in the launcher. Not sure if RGO specifically makes use of that.

I played just a little bit. The mixed-in 8-bit graphics (especially in the options menu) strike me as an odd aesthetic. It is kind of jarring to go from smooth graphics to 8-bit graphics.

There isn't much to tell you how to fly or a tutorial in the game but there are hints as you do stuff. Looking at the key mapping helps too.

Not sure about their save system, however. Saving only happens when you dock. I can see getting pissed if I lose a lot of progress in a long mission because I can't save at any time.

Rebel Galaxy let you save anytime from the pause menu by exiting to main menu. Sometimes would do that in open space right before warping into a big battle just in case.

The Dark Souls style of save anywhere game.

Got the wife to get this installed for me. Damn you, workday! End already!

Game is awesome. Got my ass kicked at first until I started getting a feel for combat awareness. Make use of the targeting map if you are having trouble.

The game is ok - I think I let the hype meter peg and expected too much. It is very much heavy on style and light on substance. The music is great, combat and ship sounds are ok, graphics are a solid "meh". It crafts a decent Fireflyesque atmosphere. The gameplay loop at least with just a few hours in basically, deliver stuff, mine stuff, kill stuff (good guy credit), kill stuff (Bad Guy/Pirate Credit), investigate stuff and the occasional mission riff off of one of those aforementioned lines of gameplay. I found combat w/either the HOTAS or Gamepad pretty well done - game definitely slanted for gamepad play. The mini games were decently implemented, but I think most people will only play if there is a ship component involved in the long run. Definitely watch the "How to Play" video by the game designer that is embedded into epic - there some good opening hours hints. The game gets a solid 7.5 overall.

You definitely and get in and out of a game and mission quickly - I do like that. You feel like youve done something even with just 15-30 minutes of play. The game gets a solid 7.5 overall.

Edit - please post game play tips if you have them. My first tip/no brainer is do the local delivery missions whenever you can - free money and usually takes around 2 minutes.

Sitting here at the library with Find My Friends turned off, playing hooky from wife, life, and work, trying to download via my tethered work phone, and praying I will get in some play time before the wife expects me home.

installed. About to play!!!

I hope y'all are enjoying the game!

Yeah, but I just wish it evolved the Privateer genre a bit more.

If you are playing the same game I am right now and saying this hasn't evolved Privateer, you are remembering Privateer through some rose-colored glasses.

Evolving doesn't mean growing another arm most times. It's strengthening and enhancing. Definitely loving this. Real sense of personality in the world is so refreshing. I love Elite Dangerous, but it always felt kind of sterile most of the time (outside of the deliriously awesome combat).

This game is the first time in a long time for a game of this type, that I didn't need to use a 3rd party tool to do well at trading in the game. That's saying a lot, mostly about my lack of economic assessment skills but whatever

And I also try to understand, how the hell did 5 people make this?

Hmm. Epic claims there's a problem with my purchase, and that I will be refunded in 8 days or so. This popped up immediately after I entered my payment info into Epic's website. My bank account is showing a $29.99 pending charge to the Epic Games Store.

After too much searching I found and downloaded the actual Epic Store client. Don't see the game in the library there either.

I didn't used to care about the exclusivity deal, but now I'm rethinking that opinion...

I don't believe merchants have any control over the expiration of a credit card hold. It should drop off in a few days when the confirm fails to arrive.

Call the credit card company usually they can approve the charge after validating you are the cardholder. Then call the vendor to let them know the charge should go through.

I had a chance to play some this afternoon. I'm loving the atmosphere, graphics, and story. I'm making progress and enjoying it.

But ... the mouse controls? Hmm, how to describe this nicely ... the mouse controls are a complete sh*tshow?

There's two modes, virtual stick and relative. Virtual stick treats the mouse like a joystick, but it steers the ship like a drunken sailor and it's flat impossible to line up a shot on any of the settings. Relative is better after you turn off the dead zone, but its behavior is still bizarre - sometimes moving the mouse a short distance will cause the ship to swing quickly and continuously, and other times the ship will start swinging and then just stop, or worse bounce back in the other direction. This leaves you lifting and swiping the mouse repeatedly just trying to point the ship at a target, and then wobbling your way into a point of aim. There are no keybindings for strafe left/right/up/down, which means that WASD and the surrounding keys are just duplicates of the mouse controls or unused.

I'm currently using Relative mode with no dead zone and very high sensitivity. It's workable, but I feel like I'm fighting the controls and swiping my mouse around like mad trying to do a 180 and stay in the fight. I would go so far as to say the mouse controls are unusable with the default settings, and virtual stick is completely unusable. I realize the game was designed to be played with a gamepad, but ... the mouse controls need to at least work. Hopefully they'll be able to fix this quickly.

Best get one of them Novint Falcon hoochiemabobs. If'n you can find one.

Anyone have any thoughts on difficulty settings? I'm going to jump in on sim mode. I guess I'll report whether I've made a terrible mistake or not. I don't even understand what flight assist might be.

Flight assist is a hold-down-the-button-to-keep-the-target-in-your-sights thing. Sounds like an "I Win" button but isn't really, just helps with the constant pitch and roll. I'd say you'll want it with a gamepad, not with a joystick.

I started with Veteran, by the way, and it was fine (though a colour-coded radar couldn't come soon enough).

Okay, I could really use a ship painter for dummies. Like, I didn't really need space Photoshop here. Just some different textures and a color chooser for parts. Also, the "print physical model" option is hilarious.

Polygon recommends 3rd person camera instead of cockpit view for combat.

I have to admit that feels more like the first game, and looked good in some of the videos I saw.

The Double Damage guys and gals are killing it in Tech Support. The whole team is locked into the Discord and addressing bugs - with two patches having been released since launch this morning - and helping people as issues are being reported. If you’re having any problems, I suggest you check in there.

Welp, that's my evening gone, and I had a hell of a time. I died like a dozen times because I suck, but mostly enjoyed it despite that. Definitely worth every penny of the day one purchase for me.
