Rebel Galaxy Outlaw - Privateering-All

I played what seemed like a couple hundred hours of Privateer without learning there is a story in it. I was content to fly and trade and fight. Not until much much later did I learn I needed to go to New Detroit, I guess I never made it there in my game.

I wonder if I will miss the story in this game.

To be honest, the only thing that sticks out about it in my mind is it was probably the first game I ever bounced off of. It wasn't necessarily a bad game, but as a wing commander junkie, not the experience I was looking for.

bah

Yes it plays great without a controller, but it's sublime with a controller.

You can pretty much ignore the story, in fact the story is not where the most money is made, it's side missions/salvage.

I also hate/love you guys.

I streamed a bit more of it today if y'all wanna watch.

Too bad it comes out on the last day of my paternity leave. Would have been perfect to play for the next week and a half.

My concerns about Tencent's stake in Epic have basically nothing to do with my personal information and more to do with the pernicious impact of China's censorship policies on artistic freedom, which have already started to be seen in both the video gaming and tabletop gaming spaces.

Speaking of which, will I be able to cover my ship in Taiwanese flags, Hong Kong flags, and maybe a few Winnie the Pooh decals? Can I mod them in if I play on PC?

From what I've seen, you can load in any image file and plaster your ship with whatever you want. I think one of their gameplay videos has a demonstration. I'll throw in a link if I can find it.

You can add your own music I believe as well, if the 24 hours of music across 7 genre stations included in the game aren't to your liking.

When I was playing Wing Commander 1 (see avatar), I made a mix tape of just "You Could Be Mine" and "Don't Cry" over and over to use as a soundtrack. The intro to the former was perfect for the scramble sequence, and the latter brought home the empty loneliness of space.

If memory serves, (been years since I played) you are told where to go in Privateer. There's no big flashing arrow on a map. One of the most entertaining and addictive games I've ever played.

Pre-ordered, watching videos of the ship painting tool while I count down the hours.

I thought this came out next Sunday and not Tuesday! Hooo boy am I excited even more!

I pre-ordered over the weekend as well. I haven't watched or read any of them as I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but in browsing Reddit, I've seen a few reviews have already popped up and there's a lot of discussion - all positive, from what I have seen.

Now to suffer through the next 36 hours...

I just saw the Giant Bomb Quick Look. The space casino sold me. I'm in!

My recollection (which is almost assuredly wrong) is that they made the place to go to start the actual story (New Detroit) so enticing that eventually you would want to go there. But they never explicitly said "hey, go there" that I recall. I was having too much fun in the hinterlands taking bounties and moving cargo to make it there and so missed the story parts.

That was what clues me in to the release date. I track all the games I’m interested in between the various stores and had this written down as 18th. Thrilled I can jump in and play tomorrow since I still have another 5 days off work*.

*but am looking after my 3 year old and new born so time is limited

1.0 hit today, so I've already begun my Let's Play. It's the best you guys.

I preordered this afternoon and am impatiently waiting.

Austin Walker talked about the game on Waypoint’s podcast this past Friday. He likes it, calls it a good podcast game, but states that it doesn’t take the gameplay ideas beyond Privateer or Freelancer in meaningful ways. That tempers my expectations a bit. I am still looking forward to playing it when it comes to Switch but I’m no longer bummed that I have to wait longer for that version.

This sounds like a load of bullsh*t to me. This has always been sold as a 2019 Privateer, with more stuff, and it has more stuff. More mission types, more ships, more systems, etc etc.

I get sick of that type of criticism. Like a band you love coming out with a new album that's more of the same stuff _you already love_ and gets a lukewarm response because it's "too samey." Privateer is in my all-time top 5, and I'm very excited for tomorrow.

But how does it play with a Novint Falcon?

Just because the game is being sold as 2019 Privateer doesn’t mean he can’t want 2019 Privateer+New Ideas.

Like I said, I’m happy to play a version of that game updated with modern graphics, sound, etc. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it. I’d just be more excited if the game sounded like it broke new ground, rather than building more stuff on the established genre foundations.

WHAT IS THIS EVEN?

Some kind of medical imaging device would be my guess.

Looks like a 6DOF control- I've seen a similar controller for CAD programs. The one I'm familiar with had a tennis-ball sized grip on a small platform with a couple of buttons, and could sense 3 axes each of translation and rotation.

Oh. My. God.

I GUESS he can complain about that, which is idiotic, because they're delivering pretty much what they promised. Just because this idiot didn't get what HE wanted is a moot point.

Hmm, to hold out for the Switch version so I can play on the couch or jump in on PC in my sauna-like office now...

Apparently a poorly received 3D haptic feedback gaming controller by a company that appears to have gone out of business around 2010, but it looks more like something my wife might hide in her bottom dresser drawer.

https://www.amazon.com/Novint-Falcon...

In the abstract, wanting a new game in a genre to break some new ground is perfectly reasonable.

For this genre? The existing ground hasn't really been accessible since the 90s and I'm just happy to have an easy launch pad again.

Do not Google Novint Falcon mods at work.

It isn’t a moot point, it’s valid criticism. He’s allowed to discuss his experiences with a game. Austin is the editor in chief of one of the more notable gaming sites, and reputed as one of the smartest and most articulate critics around. His opinion counts at least as much as mine or yours.

You’re certainly entitled to your opinion, but the ad hominem attacks are making me wonder about your character. Is bringing a less than perfect opinion of the game to this thread taboo because you made it? Or because the developers gave you preview code?

I'm just tired of people expecting this game to deliver things it never promised. It's infuriating.
