\m/(~_~)\m/ Bring the Metal! \m/(~_~)\m/

Inorite? It looks like an average image from one of those late-90s c-gen desktop background packs that used to float around when CD burners were a big thing.

I remember thinking the same thing about some of the imagery they projected during their last jaunt to Australia. It is definitely intentional, but I'm not sure what statement they are trying to make other than 'we really just don't give a f*ck any more'.

So, I just bought a ticket to go see Emmure and As I Lay Dying at the House of Blues in November. It coincides (day wise) with when I usually go to Houston and it's about 3 blocks from my hotel...

My 44 yr old a$$ is going to be so deaf on Wednesday.

Bring good earplugs. No excuses.

Yup. Imagine my surprise when, after years of not wearing plugs at shows I did... and found that the sound was actually much better!

Just ordered some.

#oldman

Good musician earplugs aren't even expensive, and should have a nice flat response curve so the sound is kept intact, just quieter. Though it does sound a little different because you can hear it clearer instead of hearing your ears getting damaged.

I've been wearing music-oriented earplugs for years, highly recommend!

I ordered these because I’m sheeple and Amazon Choice gets me every time.

Those should be just fine.

Because I have small ear openings (cannot comfortably wear ear buds, for example), the plugs I love most are the low profile ones from DownBeats.

I also own the Etymotic ER20s, a very commonly recommended plug. They're good but not as comfortable for my baby-sized earholes as the DownBeats.

I'd never heard of this (except for the performers).

Went down a rabbit hole of lady fronted moon/doom metal

Take a listen to :

Lucifer

Castle

Witch Mountain

Add to that list:

CHRCH

SubRosa (RIP )

Windhand

Acid King

Shroud Eater

Demon Lung

Ice it up and wheelchair your ass to the venue!

Cmon, man! I went to the pub for the Champions League final with my arm in a sling!

If Baroness was the New York Mets and it was the World Series I'd find a way

This seems really, really good.

I feel a little less bad about missing Psycho Las Vegas now that Oranssi Pazuzu has canceled.

They got Sumac to replace them, which, score, but I've seen them twice.

I listened to Spectral Voice today for the first time in a long while, and really liked them once again! Furthermore, as I've continued listening to more and varied types of death metal, it becomes easier for me to distinguish between what they're doing and what Blood Incantation is going for (again, both bands are the same personnel except for the drummers).

Spectral Voice's death-doom, while frequently quite fast (moreso than I had remembered) is more about mood and eerieness. Blood Incantation is definitely exploring the weird caverndeath space created by Demilich and Timeghoul, and currently en vogue with several other excellent bands.

I also continue to adore Tomb Mold and love their newest album just as much as their second record. Hopefully I'll get to see them one of these days.

I saw Tomb Mold last year with Horrendous, and that was a fantastic show - I'd definitely recommend seeing them if you get a chance! It's always amazing to see a drummer singing. Well, "singing". I don't know they do it.

This one's been ripping up my headphones for a couple weeks now. Reminds me of earlier The Ocean, with some really great post-metal if you're into that kind of thing:

Mireplaner is definitely on my end of year list for 2019.

Oh, yeah, I like that.

Yeah, Tomb Mold is the band I most want to see live right now.

Finally got around to listening to that Kull album mentioned a page or two back. That's some good stuff, thanks for the rec garion! It's a fun listen.

The new Tool track was just... boring for me. It didn't exactly get me very excited about the album. And Tool is probably the band that got me into metal in the first place, way back when AEnima came out. I didn't even think 10,000 Days was bad actually. Eh, we'll see in a couple weeks I guess.

Anyone else listen to the new Abbath release? It's sort of the same deal - kind of boring in my opinion. There are some good parts to it, but in general I wasn't really blown away.

This is what I'm into right now:

Comes across to me as a cross between that Celeste style blackened crust and Gojira progressive death metal. And they're also one of those outspokenly anti-fascist metal bands, contributing both to Kim Kelly's Riffs for Reproductive Justice as well as Worldwide Organization of Metalheads Against Nazis (WOMAN) compilations, which is always a plus for me.

I've been spinning Fen's 2017 release Winter a lot this week. I've never listened to Fen before now, so it's all new to me, but i spun some of their earlier stuff and the production quality on Winter is so much better than prior albums that I'm only jamming it.

Fen is post-black and while they sometimes go a bit too post and make their songs or parts of songs too long, this is one of those "that's a 17 minute song?!?" albums to me. While the above video is actually the band's first ever official video, I'm partial to the first half of the opening song on the album:

I'd give Fen a solid good score. I'm not sure what it is that keeps bringing me back, but they're hitting the right notes for me. Some editing and you could have something great, I think. (What post-band isn't like that outside of Pelican and Mogwai?)

The song has grown on me, massively. It went from being a joke to giving me some hope for the new record. I still can't believe how derivative some of the parts of the song are, especially Danny's drumming being so similar to Reflection. But Maynard's vocals feel fresh and I still can't believe that I'm finding that the most interesting part. Maynard has always been the cherry on top for me with the music being the real draw. The music feels a bit also ran to me with Maynard being the special sauce. Danny is still Danny. Justin is Justin, though also feeling like an echo of himself. And I'm curious to see what new tricks Adam pulls out because there's a few times in Fear that he does some neat stuff. Most of the song he's doing more of the same, but there's a few moments where he is showing chops I'm surprised he pulled off.

Can anyone recommend some Industrial Metal in the vein of Static-X or a band that has a comparable sound aesthetic? I sometimes listen to Dope, Fear Factory, Powerman 5000, Mudvayne and Coal Chamber (meh).

I love this kind of stuff as it helps me power through my workouts!

None of those are bands I follow, but for workouts I dig:

The Crown
Skeletonwitch
Behemoth
Pig Destroyer
Dillinger Escape Plan
Kvelertak

etc.

Unfortunately, not really. Industrial Metal in general is kinda dead.

Khonsu is the only recently active group off the top of my head, but even they're a bit of a stretch.

I liked Sybreed when they were active. They put out four albums before dissolving.

David Draiman's one off album with his totally-not-Disturbed band Device isn't terrible.

Oh, and for something a little cleaner sounding, try Celldweller.

In general, though, industrial as a genre turned to electronic dance music and metal went more metal and less industrial.

Oddly enough, or not, the Rammstein side of industrial music has been more longer lasting. There's numerous bands with a similar sound that are still putting out music.

Ministry put out an album this year, you can always listen to that.

Hell yes, they are great. I found them via that Riffs for Reproductive Justice compilation, and they recently released a new album that seems to be getting quite a bit of good press these days.

Alright you've convinced me to give it some more listens. Maybe with some more active listening I can get it more. I'm really surprised all their stuff is streaming all of a sudden, even Opiate, albeit with a different album cover.

@cartoonin, maybe Gravity Kills? They were around way back when and had a similar sound. All the bands I can think of are from 20 years ago. I think garion is right that there doesn't seem to be much these days in industrial metal. Crystal Method? Ministry is a good pull, r013nt0. The Disco Biscuits do some interesting stuff, but they're not quite metal.
