Let's talk anime.

Netflix is doing a 3D Knights of the Zodiac series that comes out on the 19th. The trailer looked bad to me. Never seen the original, it didn't look good to me either.

Oh yeah, kind of forgot about that. I remember the discussions about the changes Shun, a character who bucked the male stereotypes, pretty unique for his time (1980's): a gentle, reserved hero who disliked fighting. Making him into a female, who seems a bit cocky from her one line in the trailer, bugs me more than anything else, especially since there are already female characters, knights even, who are already in the franchise who could have just been worked into the earlier storylines.

Well its a good reminder I should get back to watching the show. Need to figure out where I left off. I know there are a lots of episodes left for me. The most recent ones just finished airing early this year.

Finished watching Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. I really liked the series as a whole. As I said before it's like a apocalyptic steampunk samurai zombie mystery thiller. The animation and music are top notch. It also totes good fighting scenes, evolving characters, and a plot (simple but likable) that continuously unravels at a good pace throughout the episodes. The ending was decent and pretty much tied up the 1st season we.ll but I'll be excited to see where the series goes hope they address

Spoiler:

the larger mystery of how the kabane came into existence in the first place

One of the suggested titles after watching Kabaneri was Sword Oratoria: Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side. When I saw the title I thought it was a little silly and passed it up initially but then saw an advertisement and thought it looked kind of cool with the whole fantasy adventurers getting experience and levels with dungeon crawls part I'm already six episodes in before I knew what happened. First couple of episodes are mostly character development but then the action starts to pick up.

This is a side story to the anime Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girl in a Dungeon?. I've enjoyed it enough I am going to pause on the series and watch the first series.

Well, a follow-up film recently released in Japan, though I have no clue when it is intended to release in outside Japan. I believe a second season was planned as well.

Oh goodness, I finished the first season of that show and asked myself why I even bothered. Maybe you can get something more out of it, and maybe Sword Oratoria is a better side-story kind of thing, but the series is all wish-fulfillment and fan-service. I was not a fan and kind of regret having spent the time it took to watch it.

Huh, well, they've got a ton of great art to use.

Watched the first episode of Vinland Saga on Prime and it's looking really good. Love the manga so I hope the rest of the show holds up.

I liked the season final to One Punch Man. Highlight was the Metal Bat battle and hero hunter, demon cyborg, bang, his brother, and giant bug battle. I thought this season was overall better than the last. The animation wasn't as good but it wasn't like it was bad. I liked having a over arching story instead of mostly random episodes in the last season.

I also like season end to Attack of Titan. No action but I still liked it. Finally seems to be going somewhere now that we know why the titans exist.

Still working my way through Naruto Next Generation. I think I'm like 30 episodes behind. I don't know why I watch this. Every episode seems like filler and probably mostly is.

One Piece is in the Wano arch. I'm not really digging it. I'm glad the other half of the crew is here. I just hope the story picks up.

I'm still trying to finish Shippuden. I've started watching Erased (pretty good!), so it's going to take a while.

If It's for My Daughter, I'd Even Defeat a Demon Lord is either going to be the cutest, sweetest series this season, or the darkest. Or both.

Take note: if you want to make a 3DCG anime, this is the right way to do it:

Oh that looks so good.

I should probably watch more Lupin the 3rd, but I think the fact that it's such a long legacy makes it tough to figure out where to start.

Just watch the latest two series. The entire franchise is episodic in nature, and character depictions depend heavily on the specific director and writers so you're not really missing anything starting with those. The older series are a bit hit or miss(especially because Miyazaki took over as director of the 1st Lupin series 3 episodes in, and it shows).

Also watch The Castle of Cagliostro. It's Miyazaki's first feature film, and the animation still holds up today. It's on Netflix. Just make sure you're watching the subbed version. The dub is very weird.

I'm hopeful because it pushes some buttons that a few other recent shows tried but failed (because they then skewed off into either overpowered cakewalks or skeevy sexual power imbalances).

I've been enjoying the latest spin-off from the Fate franchise, Lord El-Melloi II's Case Files. This series is avoiding the usual excesses of that franchise (endless fanservice), and is leaning into what I think is the best part of the franchise, the whole "mages are assholes" aspect.

Short version: It's ten years after Fate/Zero, and Waver Velvet, the kid who got in way over his head in the Fourth Holy Grail War, is now a teacher in the Clocktower, the world's premier mage school. He solves crimes.

And I kind of love it? The promise of the show is that each episode will have a new glimpse into the world of mages doing the awful things that mages always do, and Waver will have to solve some new mystery. The series starts with an "episode 0," which was released back at the start of the year, and which feels like a pilot episode. Episode 1 of the series proper is mostly a flashback which helps connect the dots between Waver Velvet, the kid who lost but survived the Fourth Holy Grail War, and Lord El-Melloi II, teacher of the Clocktower.

But episode 2 feels like the first proper episode, which shows us what the series is actually going to be: There is a magical mystery, and Waver is invited to come and solve it. And if the series can keep up this sort of thing for however many episodes it's going to run? Then I am totally in.

So a few days ago I spent the night moving my anime list from anime-planet to anilist.co Fianlly figures out how to get it to start generating my stat page and its pretty neat. Not perfect, of course. The most common tags, for example, are lead by “Male Protagonist” and “Female Protagonist,” because almost every anime I watch has one of those tags.

Multiple people are dead and many more are injured after an arson attack at Kyoto Animation

Guy literally walked in with a can of gasoline. Incredible.

That's horrifying.

Was that a popular studio, not that it matters. What the f*ck.

Sentai Filmworks has set up a GoFundMe to help KyoAni and the families of the victims:

https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-kyoa...

Buzz in Japanese Twitter is that there are some fraudulent crowdfunding campaigns out there, as sadly seems to be the case now with any high publicized tragedy, so beware. Sentai's campaign seems to be the best way to get your money where it should go right now if you're moved to donate.

KyoAni has some of the best working conditions in the anime industry, and have done a lot to give new animators and directors a start, including a lot of women. The loss of so many talented people is going to be felt in the industry for ages. This is a tragedy on multiple levels.

THE EVOLUTION OF KYOTO ANIMATION: A UNIQUE ANIME STUDIO AND ITS CONSISTENT VISION

A short list of just a few of their previous shows:
Clannad
K-On!
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Free! Iwatobi Swim Club
Nichijou
Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions
Sound! Euphonium
Violet Evergarden

Their most recent US release was the limited run of the movie Sound! Euphonium: Oath's Finale, and the upcoming film they were working on was Violet Evergarden the Movie.

And Miss Kobyashi's Dragon Maid

A Silent Voice.

I just totally binged on a ton of anime:
I liked the 3d Knights of the Zodiac. The female character is far from cocky. The animation is decent and certainly a cut above typical 3d TV animation. Its pretty short as I think only 6 episodes are out so far. I have to admit I am a bit nostalgic about seeing such and old series that I never saw brought to life in modern times.

I blew through Record of Lod.. er, um.. Battlecrest War. There are so many things that should be turn offs, but I couldn't stop watching it for some reason. There are video game and anime rip off characters. The main theme I swear I have heard before and I think it is a rip off of Final Fantasy or Zelda or something. But it is epic in scope and things like the main guy's arm guard is awesome.

Despite the god arcs being completely ridiculous from the start and only getting more ridiculous as time goes on, I enjoyed God Eaters enough to want to play the game. (its downloading in the background)

Finally got around to watching Silent Voice. I'm wrecked.

A Silent Voice is a great film. Very touching, very moving.

I couldn't watch it right now. Can't even listen to music from a Kyoto Animation anime, let alone watch one right now.

I want to eat your pancreas should be next on your list of great anime films to watch, if you haven't already seen it. It is a little more of a tearjerker, even after telling you how it ends at the beginning of the film.

I just binged the entire The Promised Neverland first season over the past 24 hours. Damn, that is an amazing show. I really love those "fighting" shows where it's all about mind games and outwitting your opponents rather than hitting them with a kamehameha. I can't wait to see what's going to unfold in season 2.

Alita, Battle Angel was great! Just rented it finally .

The live action movie?
