No Man's Sky Catch-All 2.0

My first start was on a planet that was normal, with heat storms. So... Not so bad. Just ran for cover when the temp started climbing.

I'll probably start over again when the update comes out: it'll be my third time. For some reason I find it really hard to get back into NMS after a year break (plus: the universe is probably going to be reset AGAIN, and any new quest lines will be wonky with existing saves if past patches are any indication).

Patches are pretty save game breaking in my experience when it comes to the mission progressions, old bases and what not.

Dying quickly due to environmental conditions is about the worst start you can have, so having got through that, you're doing well. :-)

The joys of the random start I suppose. I wondered briefly if they give everyone a rough start, but that would probably put off way too many people.

So one of my planets had red water. Neat looking, and I scavenged some clams or something, but then it occurred to me there will be some sea monsters around somewhere, and now I'm nervous about going in deep water.

I was pretty sure this is how every start in the game is? At least now, since its part of the tutorial how to look for red and yellow plants, so you HAVE to start on this kind of planet.

Yes. The first planet is always environmentally hostile, although some are worse than others. They do tell you to pack up and leave the planet in the tutorial and the second planet is usually pretty mild. However, if memory serves, they also tell you to build a small base computer on that first planet. So, people just assume they are supposed to stick around and the hostility of the first planet is just a case of RNG. They should have added some additional prompts to make it a little more clear you are encouraged to get out of there as quickly as you can.

I may just restart the campaign when the next update comes out. I'm not married to anything I did in my existing campaign.

I wound up building the base on the third planet; the first was just telling me to get out of there, and the second one was basically a low atmosphere moon. Third planet was where the story had me build the base, and it was very friendly outside of some worms that smack me with their tails.

Also, I found a drop pod and tried to get a suit upgrade, but it wanted me to have some antimatter to finish the repairs first. How long until antimatter is available?

For that matter, how much of my progression will likely be wiped out in a couple of weeks when the new patch drops?

Antimatter should be pretty early, it is needed to make the fuel to warp to other systems.

What is multiplayer currently like? My brother will probably grab it when the VR patch comes out. I'd like to play coop with him. Is our individual progress saved whether we're playing toget or not or are we basically playing on the host's 'save'?

Is starting up for the first time and joining someone relatively easy to do or is some story progress required first?

So, the way I've done it is that you simply allow someone to "play" with you (ie, you can talk to them, interact with them in-game, and to a degree, their stuff). Then, you can travel to where they are and play with them. Your saves are your own, but you do get to discover their planets you visit as they are new to you.

So multiplayer is more sharing location data and chat than sharing "saves". All saves are individual, all the time, as far as I know.

I first did multiplayer with teleport devices in place, but I think you can join someone's game at any time, so you should be able to do it right from the start. You do have to set it up in the menus, though, if I recall correctly.

Yeah, as a general rule everything about your character - progression, inventory, ships - is locked in your own save (to the point that it's all hackable with save editors). For stuff about the world, like bases and planet discoveries, I tried to get a handle on it at some point but basically concluded that the details depend on version and don't affect gameplay overmuch.

polypusher, keep in mind the multiplayer implementation Robear and fenomas are describing is how it is currently implemented. You specifically said you will probably pick it up when the update releases. That update is supposed to include true multiplayer, but precise details haven't really been provided yet.

A horrible thought just occured to me - What if the last "Pillar" is PVP (Hence the true multiplayer) and they are releasing their version of a Battle royale game?

The horror.....

You take that back. Right. NOW.

Considering how combat (and in particular ground combat) is by FAR the worst part of that game, I doubt it.

42 player ship to ship combat in low altitude over various planets

Now I´m just messing around, but its a fun thought - or, horrible

I bet it's loot boxes available through micro-transactions.

And an element exchange, where you can buy materials with pseudo-currency that you can purchase with real money in amounts guaranteed to leave you with no way to spend the last couple of dollars without reloading with more real money.

You are a bad person, and should feel bad about yourself.

So, would a battle royal mode matter? If you don't like it, continue not playing that mode. If it successful for Hello Games, then... yay!

INCOMIIIIING!!!

https://kotaku.com/a-new-trailer-jus...

From the very brief article, "A new trailer just dropped for No Man’s Sky Beyond, the game’s upcoming expansion, and if you ever wanted to ride the weird alien animals, August 14 will be your lucky day. "

I guess that’s the third pillar?

Trailer looks cool with all the activity going around on it but what will reality look like? This is how Grapeshot games tried to sale Atlas by showing robust towns full of people and players interacting together and so far it's not lived up anywhere near the trailer. True multiplayer may get me interested in this game again but what's going to actually bring people together? And I hope it's not PvP. PvP in this game would be just bad as the combat stands. I would like a little more danger from animals though. Is that a thing yet?

I only care about true multiplayer with my friends. Anything Beyond ( you see what I did there) that is a negative not a positive in my book.

From the NMS Website:

August 8, 2019.

Hello!

Thank you for your patience. Our biggest update yet launches in a little under a week on August 14th and we couldn’t be more excited to share this trailer with you, showing off the massively expanded online component of Beyond for the first time.

BEYOND is the culmination of 12 months of work on what was originally going to be 3 large separate updates.

The more we got into development however, the more those individual pieces started to coalesce and become interdependent on each other.

Virtual Reality is cool and a major undertaking for a procedurally generated universe, but virtual reality becomes all the more enjoyable and immersive when you’re playing with friends, be they VR players or not.

Bringing the social multiplayer enhancements we wanted to make together with VR seemed not only desirable and natural but unstoppable.

Remember that everything you see in our launch trailer can be experienced in VR if you have a headset.

We’ll be telling you a little more about some other elements of Beyond very soon.

BEYOND is not only our biggest update to date, but it also feels like our most important. It feels like all the different strands of the game have come together and unified the experience more than any other update before it.

The community has helped us get to this point in so many ways. Your feedback, encouragement and support fuels us and makes us strive for more and better every day.

It is never easy when the standards you set for us and we set ourselves are so ambitious, but the highs certainly outweigh the lows and it is a privilege to be on this rollercoaster with you.

This is another step on our journey and our journey continues.

Much love,

Sean

I did not get in my spaceship and fly millions of light years from home so that I could be with other people.

So I picked this up again for the first time since launch and enjoying it a lot more. Really hoping I can rope some friends in once the update hits. Quick question though, will I eventually be able to stop spending a lot of my time harvesting the basic elements so I have enough fuel for my ship and equipment?

Yes, absolutely. Upgrade your multi-tool (faster harvesting, better materials) and your vehicles (more efficient systems) and you’ll be fine.

From the launch trailer, it seems like there is some additional automation going on. Some new machines that are all connected with wires and pipes. Wonder if they have added some resource or manufacturing automation like Satisfactory or Factorio? There were auto miners in the game already.
