So his mother's sacrifice will ultimately allow for better assessment of the amount of protection ground vehicles will provide to soldiers from underbody mines and IEDs.

That's all well and good, but perhaps the people leaving their bodies for Alzheimer's Research might object to that?

Which would be great and all if he donated his mother's body for non-specific "science", but I'm pretty sure blast testing has no applicability to Alzheimer's treatment.

I suspect that had dude read the small print on the paperwork when he donated the body, he'll likely find that this is all entirely above board.

Story about it here. Apparently this wasn't the only one and the owner of the company has plead guilty so numerous federal charges.

Did anyone else check snopes to see if this was real?

Looks like it

“There was actually wording on this paperwork about performing this stuff,” he added. “Performing these medical tests that may involve explosions, and we said no. We checked the ‘no’ box on all that.”

well...

that's 6000$ for Alzheimer's research I guess

Ah, if he specifically directed them to not subject her body to that type of testing, that's different. I thought her corpse was generically donated and he just didn't like where it ended up.

So, I'm not the only one sitting here thinking that "got exploded" is an awesome endpoint to donating your body to science?

No, I would find it awesome.

These gender reveals are getting out of control.

Of course the powder is pink - airplanes, like ships, are always feminine.

Where do I sign up for this? My mom wants to be cremated so I wonder if she would be down for this option as well?

I had hoped to be left to rot in the woods in one of those forensics research facilities, but being exploded sounds way cooler.

I want my body to rot in one of those body farms too. My wife doesn't like that idea. I wonder what she would think of explosion based body removal?

Technically the bodies aren't blown apart. They receive shock damage through accelerative loading and then go through an examination (autopsy?) to see what broke. I don't know what happens to the bodies afterwards.

From what I've heard from people who have been involved in it, the bodies used in cadaveric blast testing are treated with the upmost respect. Thankfully I am not part of that of those efforts. I'm not sure I could handle it. Mannequins only for this guy.

Stiff by Mary Roach discusses lots of things that can be done with corpses, including the crash testing. It’s really neat.

Now I want more pictures!
Bonus points for felines!

I've told my wife she can do whatever the hell she wants with my leftover meat. But if she is looking for inspiration, science dummy or turn my ashes into a diamond ring to freak out her replacement partners or embed my ashes into a record (all of which are viable services that actually exist).

Mary Roach is a living National Treasure. Her books are wonderful and she has been a delightful guest several times on the comedy podcast "Jordan, Jesse, Go!" I loved Packing for Mars especially, but Bonk and Grunt are great, too. Grunt also talks about those under-body explosive tests and how they inform penis replacement medical tech. Amazing stuff.

I saw her do a talk/presentation thing right before Stiff came out and I totally fell in love with her. She was hilarious and humble and fascinating.

Have you ruled out taxidermy?

Hell no. That's entirely covered in "do what you will with the meat I no longer need" approach.

My assessment of her character has entirely ruled out taxidermy.

I can't speak for that specific case but I believe the professor who ran the cadaver lab I used to support said that they get cremated afterwards.

But anywayI think I have a hit new business idea: exotic body disposal. Want to be blown up? We can do it. Fed to piranha? We can do it. Launched into the sun? If Elon will help us out we can do it.

Well there are three things we can do with your mother. We can burn her, bury her, or dump her.

More like PyroSPAM.

At first I thought the point of the picture was that it is silly to have a security chain on a glass door (it is). But then I noticed the peep hole.
