So we just had a minor earthquake so imagine people are stocking up on supplies in case a big one hits. When I went to get water most of it was gone as a predicted but what I didn't predict was the price hike. A week ago a gallon of water was 89 - 99 cents depending on the brand. Now a gallon is 1.30. Seems like a crappy time to be raising the price on water.

I don't know how to explain without it sounding kinda self absorbed and patting myself on the back, but a guy was in need of groceries and had been sitting in the 100 degree sun with a sign asking for help, so I took him shopping yesterday. He lost his job a few years back because he had a seizure and almost fell off scaffolding. No job means he can't afford his medication, and no one wants to risk hiring a man who has frequent seizures.
That alone sparks the anger in my heart, but the fact that his situation is far from unique here in the US is what makes it even more infuriating.
He also asked me about 10 times through our trip what he could do as repayment. He offered everything between landscaping, deep cleaning my house, running errands, even walking to my house every day to take out garbage and do my dishes. I told him he didn't have to "earn" it, I just wanted him to eat and to someday show someone else kindness, just like people did for us.

He said he had a job interview next week though, and I genuinely hope he gets it and can get on his medication. Then maybe someday we can actually help the thousands of others in similar positions and I wouldn't have to be angry about it anymore.

With the level of personal hell you and your family have been through, seeing you pay it forward is heartwarming (not that any of us would ever doubt you would given the option). Don't feel that you are "self-absorbed", it's exactly the positive thing we all need to hear in our current climate. Good for you!

Having a very crappy week...

Spoiler:

I had to bring my son, who has severe cerebral palsy, into the Emergency Dept. on Tues eve cause he was struggling to breath. Around 4.30am I found out that there's infection in his lungs and he had to be admitted. It's now Sunday and he's still in hospital, and still showing symptoms of being sick, even though his breathing has been fine for a while now. X-rays show that the infection and liquid that had been present seem to be clearing up, so the Drs think he picked up a virus in the hospital when he came in and that's what's keeping him sick. It's really frustrating cause we think he could have been home on Thurs or Fri if he hadn't gotten that virus, but because he picked it up in a weakened state he's just not shaking it. Obviously this is all very worrying when you're talking about a child who has severe disabilities and who's general health is weakened at the best of times.

And just to add to the crappiness of the whole situation.... It was his birthday this week...and he spent it in hospital...and probably could have been home that day if he hadn't gotten the virus.

And just to keep things interesting, because my wife and I are taking it in turns to stay overnight in the hospital our normal routines are gone out the window, so I keep forgetting to take my antidepressants, and this really isn't the time to be messing around with them.

I posted this a little while ago and haven't really been around since. Very happy to report that my son is doing just fine now. It was a rough few weeks though. He had pretty bad Pneumonia, plus he picked up at least two different viruses in the hospital that just had to be let run there course. Long story short, it took a long time for us to nurse him back to health and for our family to get back into it's normal rhythm. It's all good now though, and I really appreciated the supportive comments and likes at the time.

I'm thrilled to hear that Stevintendo!

One of my new coworkers is a guy I met on Twitter who was in the same situation. Family was on the brink of losing their house because he had a massive seizure that broke his back 3 years ago. Their GoFundMe made it on the news, and they got a bunch of money from that, but a credit card company they owed money to got a judgement giving them first dibs, not the mortgage company, so almost none went to the house. Luckily I was able to help get his foot in the door with our DB team, he got hired, and things are looking up.

3 years, thousands of applications, and hundreds of interviews, and nobody til now wanted to hire someone with a seizure disorder, but they'll never list that as the reason they passed.

Thanks Thrawn! That's really nice of you to say!

New pressure washer I bought from Home Depot had one side of the package cut/smashed, which I attributed to UPS being careless, but now I'm pretty sure it was from the former owner, as everything was taken out of the plastic, there was a huge gouge down the back of the thing on an uncrushed side of the box, and the trigger/wand looked like someone's kid had played baseball with it. Clearly a very used item sold as new through the website, so have to start a return.

Home Depot sells used, old, or refurbished items?

Jet lag. I love to travel, even if I'm traveling for work. But, man, the associated jet lag with flying half-way around the world and then getting right into the office after 24 hours of flying is no fun. I was so brain dead, I tried to open my hotel room with my work badge.

When I'm booking flights now, I actually try and look for one that gets me home real late in the evening. I find getting back home and immediately taking a hot shower and going to bed at the time I'm supposed to anyways does wonders for the recovery period.

I also started booking the flights to my destination on the red eye. I realized that I can't fall asleep on a plane, and I can't fall asleep in my own bed if I have to catch a plane the next morning, so I might as well be in the air all night.

I flew business class for the first time recently. Getting a *solid* 6 hours of sleep lying entirely flat on the airplane did bloody wonders for the jet lag.

For awhile, I just bought first class tickets whenever I had to go up to the office because economy was $386 and first was $407. Just the $0 baggage checking fee made it cheaper, not to mention the meal.

Helps to use Dev Tools to remove that pesky "First Class" label in the email before screenshotting the receipt for reimbursement.

Now for some reason First is back up to 2x Economy.

The person who zip cut through the plexiglass & bars on the gate to the parkade of our apartment complex then cute through my lock and stole my bike.

Someone in the UK is going to make a killing retrofitting office blocks with Air Conditioning units in the coming years. It’s like a sauna here today, it’s horrible.

That'd be a solid ETF to create. Companies that will make money on climate change. Free money.

I loathe the latest Nvidia patch, as I was one of the lucky folks that experienced the mouse-cursor issue, which basically made my computer unusable. I was able to use the Windows driver function to roll back the driver to the previous version, which at least restored functionality, but now my game physics is all messed up (due to a release mismatch?). That has made for some amusing sights in Shadow of Mordor tonight!

Extra-loathe is that Nvidia issued a "hot-fix" that is actually an entire 500+MB driver package. As someone on a fairly limited internet connection, that's super annoying. I guess I'll try to download it during the "free" period overnight for my internet.

I hear you, Sorbicol. We even had the engineers round earlier in the week measuring the place up..of course, it'll be Autumn by the time they get around to putting it in.

You can tell it was hot by the fact that the boss sent everyone home at 3...well, apart from those of us working on the year end data return (our year end is 31 July), who had to struggle on.

Got a ticket because my car village sticker was on the wrong side of the windshield. It's not expensive but so trivial that I'm very annoyed

Did they see it and cite you specifically because it was on the wrong side? Or did they not see it and cite you for illegal parking? Condolences either way.

Contest the ticket. Send a picture of your sticker along with it.

I've gotten out of tickets with reasonable excuses. Once for forgetting to hang my state parks parking pass - sent a picture of the valid pass with an apology for leaving it in the other car, and a note saying that I love the parks system and am delighted to pay for the pass annually.

Another time for failing to notice the "back-in parking only" sign because it was literally hidden inside an overgrown bush, and parking nose-in. Once again, sending a picture explaining the situation got me out of it.

Thanks for the advice. I called about it and checked the rules online. It really did say it had to be in the passenger side which is opposite of his my old neighborhood was.

Based on that and the ticket being vague enough to apply to everything it's probably not worth contesting. Even if it was, it's only 25 bucks to pay. Which is less annoying then showing up in court.

Which is probably the point....

Who said anything about showing up in court? All of my ticket contestations have happened via email or through a website. Agreed that it's not worth physically going to court over.

Last week, my job let me go. I pretty much expected it, but didn't even think to clear off my desk ahead of time. I had a lot of toys on my desk, plus an expensive Mac keyboard and Sony headphones my wife got my as a gift.

When I was let go, I wasn't allowed to go back upstairs to get my things, and rather I was assured they'd be mailed to me.

Yesterday, a large Target box arrived with my stuff in it. Inside it seemed like the items were tossed in like so much garbage. There was random bits of bubble wrap, none of it wrapping anything. My Toothless piggy bank -- which was a gift -- is in pieces, as is several toys, and my keyboard had several keys ripped off (thankfully those popped back on). The Sony headphones thankfully survived.

The box didn't even have the word "fragile" on it, and there were two glass items in there.

I'm really sad and hurt. I tried to be as professional and calm as possible in my last meeting there, and they seemingly show me bare contempt. Once I get that severance check I'm going to be forever done with these people.

Prostate exams.

Prostate cancer. Found out dad's got it. Mom has Alzehimers. F@ck everything.

Sorry to hear that Mr Trichy especially in this land of milk and honey where either medical condition could bankrupt people. Then the emotional roller coaster caused by any serious medical problem. You have my good wishes.

It is funny how something can upset you and then something else comes along that is even worse making you feel bad for even given the first thing a moment of thought. There is no reason to feel bad though. F the little things along with the big things. Especially when you don't know the big things are coming.

Started off the day wondering about the cosmic happening that brought down three devices with the same problem at the same time. Laptop battery went bad, old PC battery went bad, and then my phone batter goes bad and starts to inflate like it is going to explode. Weird coincidence but all manageable. Got a new battery for the PC, running the laptop from ac plugged into a UPC battery backup, and have a new phone on the way. See no so bad but still odd to all happen at the same time.

Then the stupid mailman left a missed delivery note on my door. They didn't bother to knock on the door. Very frustrating considering I have been waiting for this package from Japan for about month now. However, it was easy enough to re schedule the delivery for tomorrow. This inspired me to try pointing my wyze cam out the window which worked better than expect. It is to far to detect people but can detect cars. So I'm hoping the mail car is big enough to detect. If not and he pulls this no knock sh@t again I'm going lose my sh@t.

The big thing though that I just learned about is one of my old homies has died at the old old age of 44. No easy way to handle that. F you world. Give me back my friend. Blow up all the batteries, don't delivery anything ever again. Give me back this wonderful person. A father of three. A teacher and youth coach. A better friend than I'll ever be. Just a all around good guy. Hug your friends and family. Tell them you love them.

I just had a pretty bad nightmare about my grandmother dying. She's actually still alive for now, but I am on edge and in full fight/flight mode. We are expecting her to pass sometime soon, so I suppose I have to deal with these on a more frequent basis. Yay.

Guns.

Social anxiety and loneliness. Thanks brain, you're really giving me a lot to work with here.
