Fallout: 76 Catch-All

NW was satisfactory. It has all the UI cumbersome issues that the base game has, but it was fun having to accommodate the environment as well as other players in trying to get a win.

I tried multiple times to get back into the base game and it would never find a server for me.

Server stability has definitely taken a hit with the influx of new/returning players, but I've never had a problem getting into a server before. Might be worth verifying your files.

I picked this up fairly cheap (28 dollars AU) on PC following the recent free week. Been deterred by the horror stories at launch but was having just enough fun to bite

It still seems a bit..weird? think most of the fun I have had is in just exploring really.

You're doing it right.

OK well that's reassuring lol.. thanks

Yeah, if you liked coming across the environmental story vignettes from 3 & 4 than 76 should be a good fit since that's the only way the story of it is delivered. There were some real problems with the launch and there are still some significant bugs, but most of the horror stories were overblown gamer-whining and band-wagon Bethesda bashing from people who cared more its streamability than its playability.

Edit - Their biggest problem was launching with no real beta test. The two week one they did was more of a head-start than anything else. They shouldn't have launched until they had fixed the duplication glitch that let people have server-crashing inventories. With the game live that didn't get fixed until February, 4 months from launch, but if they had an actual beta they likely could have fixed it much sooner. They'd also have been able to work out how their players wanted PVP to function a lot quicker. Now that it's 100% avoidable in Adventure mode (as of early May) and always on in Survival mode things are much better.

So bought this yesterday, got as far as character creation. Best way to play? Not really interested in PvP, so is there an option when leave the vault for this adventure mode? Other players around but no fighting? Can you switch back and forth?

I really should watch a vid or something, not really up on 76 goings on.

When you enter the game you should be given a choice between PvP and Adventure mode. Just click the one you want.

Edit: Hit "Play" and you should see this:

Adventure is what you want.

Survival is the PvP mode.

Nuclear Winter is their Battle Royale mode.

Is that choice given when you leave the vault? When I load in its straight to the character creation screen, then left to wander the vault. I turned off last night and started again this morn thinking it'd save, straight to character creation again, start that from scratch... I'd spent some time on the look.

I'm on ps4.

Maybe when you leave the Vault? The other options weren't there when I first started so I'll admit I don't know how that works.

PVP does still exist in Adventure, but it has to be explicitly agreed to now. If you don't want it, when you hit level 5, go into your game options and turn on Pacifist mode, that will turn off the ability to enter PVP via the "slap" system (your attack or "slap" another player to initiate PVP and they can "slap" you back to agree). You can still get into it via workshops, where you either contest a claimed workshop or someone contests your claimed workshop, but that's pretty rare and they changed it awhile back so that you'll only be flagged for PVP that way if you're both in the workshop area. I'm pretty sure that being in Pacifist mode screws up workshop PVP still, where you're flagged for PVP but your attacks won't do any damage.
Some things to remember to avoid accidentally getting a bounty on your head (which automatically flags you for PVP despite your Pacifist setting) is to not pick the locks of supply drops you didn't request via a holotape, don't pick any locks in a workshop area that someone else has claimed, and don't shoot at enemies in player camps (lure them out so stray bullets don't accidentally destroy something).

Cheers both. Looking forward to having a go.

There's no need to spend a long time on character creation at the start, just pick the basics, go through the vault and get outside. You can alter your appearance any time you want.

Nice change coming in next patch:

raw food items and fluxes will last 50% longer before spoiling. Additionally, your food and drinks will no longer lose condition after you fast travel.

Good, hate when things spoil too quickly. Just irritating, really.

You take your character into other modes, so my assumption is the game doesn't give you a choice in mode untile after you create a character (and maybe leave the vault).

Yeah, you have to leave the vault to access modes other than Adventure mode.

As for the food spoiling change, I'm looking forward to that too. It seems like I end up a playsession by crafting all of my raw food into cooked food. Then when I next logged in it felt like most of my food had spoiled already.
I wasn't aware that food spoil timers decreased when you fast travelled, but the patch preview article implies that. That would explain a few things.

Been playing this since they had the free week during E3 week and play solo. PvP has not been an issue at all. I've been shot twice and had a grenade explode at my feet once. I'm guessing all were mistakes as the players never pursued attacking me further. On top of that the damage done wasn't even noticeable.

I also had an incident today where I was heading to a shack in the middle of nowhere. When I came up on the shack another player was just leaving it. He saw me and gave me the thumbs up. So I gave him one back. Then all of a sudden a high-level monster rounded the corner. I started sniping it from a distance and the other player started attacking from the shack. After killing that monster two more showed up and one got on me. The thing was like 20 levels above me so I ran. But I couldn't get away. So I had no choice but to engage. I knew my chances of living was slim in close quarters (sniping is my game). Then all of a sudden the player from the shack and his buddy came to the rescue and we took that thing down. Thumb up signs from all of us and we went our separate ways.

I run across players from time-to-time, usually at train stations where you'll wind up a lot at to get to your stash, and never had any problems with them. I've seen wanted players (ones that have killed someone) pop up during that E3 week. I can only think of one time I've seen another wanted player once since that week ended. They're easy to avoid in any case as they show up on the map.

When details of the game came out and I heard about the PvP aspect it was an immediate turn off. Then when all the poor reviews came out, listening to Shawn and Amanda describe the game on the podcast, and watching a few negative video reviews I was convinced this game was not for me. But a free week is a pretty good draw to confirm suspicions. So gave this game which I knew I'd delete in an hour a shot.

Boy was I totally wrong. I have been playing this religiously since I started - like Skyrim number of hours dedicated to this each day. Almost all of the things I viewed negatively are a non-factor. Thought PvP would be a turn off and it hasn't impacted my play at all. Thought the nuclear strikes would be a huge issue, totally not. I love seeing those mushroom clouds go off in the distance and going in to photo mode to get a shot of it. The VATS system changing to just auto-aim was no issue at all. I actually love it and use it constantly. No live NPCs? Not an issue at all. The writing in this game is fantastic. Some of the quests are so fun. And to top it off the world is as addicting to explore as any other Bethesda RPG. As usual they did a fantastic job populating the world. Even going off the beaten path will usually lead to discoveries.

The only complaint from initial reviews that still rings true today are the disconnects. I've had that happen several times since playing and they can be rather annoying. Particularly when I had a series of disconnects after working my way through in to a heavily fortified location. After the disconnects all I had to show for my effort was most of my ammo gone and my weapons and armor in need of serious repair. It wasn't the end of the world but wow can they be frustrating.

Other than that though the game has been more than playable. It's quite a wonderful game and I'm playing and enjoying it as just another Fallout game in the series.

Most wanted players I saw during the free week that had a bounty likely just picked a lock they weren't supposed to. The game gives no advanced warning if it's a player-owned lock you're about to pick, and some players lock their resource gatherers in workshop. Lots of new players would see it like any other lock and pick it, earning a bounty. They could also come across a supply drop that belonged to another player and not have known that picking that lock would earn them a bounty too (it didn't for like the first month of the game, and was generally seen as a way to share the wealth since the loot was never that great, but for unknown reasons it was changed).
You can only get a Wanted bounty from killing a player if you kill one that never "slapped" you back, which takes quite a long time to do even with really good weapons. Normal, agreed-upon PVP won't flag you in Adventure mode.

I have a perk that makes my food spoil slower, so I wasn’t noticing the fast-travel-aging issue. Spoiled food makes fertilizer anyway, so it’s never wasted.

My wife and I took full advantage of the last double-XP weekend and got ourselves over level 60. I’ve outstripped her by about 3/4 of a level, and we still don’t know why my character earns more XP than her. She has specific perks to increase the rate she earns XP, and I still get something like 30% more per kill than she does. My only guess is that it’s because my Intelligence stat is twice hers, but nowhere can I find confirmation that intelligence increases XP awards.

Right now we’re taking a break to wait for more content. We’ve finished the main overseer quest (though we didn’t get credit for it for some reason, even though we listened to all of the overseer logs twice) and we each completed the nuke quest and killed the queen scorch beast. We’ve done all the scout quests and got the backpacks. We haven’t killed the sheepsquatch, though, because 1) fighting requires a consumable that’s hard to get and b) it’s impossible to do with two people. (Ok, not impossible, but too difficult to be any fun at all)

I hope they drop more stuff to do soon. Capturing workshops really isn’t worth doing above level 50, and we’ve done most of the dailies and events enough times that we don’t want to anymore.

Intelligence does affect XP, so far as I know, it's a hold over from Fallout 4. You could also be Well Rested and she's not, or be using food that gives a bonus to XP. Her perk only works when she's in a team, though I'm assuming you're teamed up when you play.

The main overseer quest gets stuck for a lot of people. It's completed, and you got the reward for it, but it's just stuck as active. It's the same way for me. I just stopped tracking it.

It's actually the Impostor Sheepsquatch that requires the expensive item to start. Actual Sheepsquatches can be encountered randomly or at the end of the Free Range events (there are three places for that to happen on the map, one in the Northwest Forest, one just south of Top of the World, and one in the Southeast Mire). The Impostor is much tougher than the actual ones, but those are still one of the toughest enemies in the game. And of course your fellow players are the biggest hindrance with the Impostor since 80% of them will just waste their ammo on it while it's invisible and invulnerable instead of activating the pylons first.

I'm also at the point of waiting for more stuff, but mainly because all that's left for me is trying to get the best legendaries I can. I've done all the non-bugged Scout challenges. Just picking an area and wandering (I've already explored everything) is still more than fun enough, bouncing from event to event hoping to get the ultra-rare rewards to drop, but I've been choosing to work on my pile instead of just maintaining in 76. The only thing I haven't done yet is successfully do Project Paradise, but getting a competent group going for that is even harder than getting a competent group for Encryptid, which at least has a server-wide message when it starts.

There are a lot of niggles and gripes that go with playing this game, lots... but am enjoying it despite that.

Does trying to ignore some if the more annoying players become any less tiresome!?

I haven't encountered many annoying players since I was level 2 and a pair of them chased me across the map wasting ammo on me for ten minutes before realizing that I wasn't going to shoot back.

Other than that there's the occasional person with a microphone, but that's not too bad. But I haven't played in a couple of weeks. Has the addition of a Battle Royale mode brought an influx of Battle Royale players?

I also haven’t really had any issues with annoying players aside from a couple people who wouldn’t turn off their mics. In fact I almost never encounter other players outside of public events. Everyone has just seemed more interested in doing their own thing, especially since they branched pvp off into a separate instance.

There's an option where you can change your audio to team only (or off) and you don't hear other people anymore...

I think I was unlucky my first couple days. Similar to your encounter DoubtingT, I had a few folk on different occasions just following me around hacking or shooting at me. A few ranters on voice too, but quickly found the mute so no worries there. Since sI posted above though, no hassles at all, see a few fellow wanderers here and there... all good.

Enjoying still, I'm kind of playing like I did early No Man's Sky... Explore, craft, chill.

I see they're adding NPCs later this year, that'll add something that does feel missing from what played so far.

I'm tempted to hold off playing much more until that's in there, but for now liking it well enough to continue as is.

So I recently set up a vendor at my CAMP. Does that mean the CAMP automatically appears on the map to other players? It's unclear if so or if/how to get it to appear on the map.

And what is worth selling at your vendor? I had a bunch of bobble heads and magazines so I just put all those up on my vendor. Do those even sell? I never use them my self.

Just hit level 45 today and still really loving the game. Not sure how much more to the main story there is though. I just started dipping my toe in the Cranberry Bog area, which looks to be the last. So many little spots on the map I haven't explored yet though. Kinda looking to starting a new melee build character but probably hold off until the NPC content comes.

Another question that came to mind too. I have enough legendary scrap metal to buy some L3 items from the vendor. Do you get to choose what type of item you get when you buy? Like for instance if I go for a ranged weapon can I specifically choose a rife? Or is it random?

Check out the map - See those green camps? Thats how yours look as well. You can see it yourself on the map as well, and you can see what you, and others sell when mousing over the camp.

As for what sells - Thats really varies into the extreme. Good weapons, rare plans, sometimes just stimpacks, and water and such.

Nope - just ranged, melee, and armor. Its random. Like I needed legs and got arms. I needed anything but a pipe pistol or fatman and got both.

Yeah, the legendary scrap slot machine is pretty terrible. I’ve never gotten something that’s better than, or even as good as, any of the items I scrapped to get the legendary scrip.

Just finished my first exploration of The Barrows. Wow, that was a junk goldmine. I did have some trouble finding my way back out, however. Some signs would have been helpful.

Holy crap, this game is pretty fun now. I just started playing a few days ago and I am digging it.

I made myself a lovely little riverside hut and am chopping scorched and robots to bits with a hatchet.

If you are looking for a decent Fallout-ish multiplayer experience, I say jump in.
