[News] Post a D&D Picture

Previous incarnations of Cleveland/P&C/D&D have had an image thread, to handle political cartoons and other image-based stuff that doesn't belong in the general post-a-picture threads.

If any of them spawn an extended discussion, please spawn it off into its own thread. Replies to non-picture replies should take the form of a link pointing to a post on a different discussion thread.

And I shouldn't have to say it, but the images still need to abide by the rules.

A compelling arguement, indeed.

The sign in front of Friendship Baptist Church in Appomattox, Virginia this week.

Pastor E.W. Lucas told the station Tuesday that he wanted to make a statement about the political divisions in Washington.

"People that feel hard about our president and want to down the president and down the country and everything, they ought to go over there and live in these other countries for a little while," Lucas said.

...

Lucas told the television station that he plans to leave the message up for a while because of the positive feedback he's received.

"Preachers, by and large, today, are afraid they're gonna hurt somebody's feelings, and when I get in the pulpit, I'm afraid I won't hurt somebody's feelings," Lucas said.

I'm sure the irony that the church displaying that is in Appomattox, Virginia, is lost on them. Appomattox, where a certain group who apparently didn't love America, tried to leave, and were forced to surrender.

I'm super tired of the people who pretend that the problem with politics today is "division" or "incivility". The problem is half the country is just fine with increasingly blatant racism.

Love that Diamond and Silk are so beloved on the right.

True intellectuals.

That tweet is so stupid that I’m not sure if it’s fake or not. I also have zero intention of looking.

It’s real. Diamond and Silk are ultra right grifters.

Poe’s Law was killed by the conservative internet. No matter how stupid the quote you have to assume it’s sincere now and occasionally, rarely, you’ll be pleasantly surprised if it turns out to be satirical.

*reads thread*

That'll teach me to post about religion and disappear into the woods for days.

Please don't assume that the modern-day pharisees in the fundamentalist churches speak for me or my church in any way. They're not the whole thing; they're just really really loud.

Some of that is our fault for not being louder to oppose them, but we could do without y'all atheist folk signal boosting their asses.

I mean, I know who they are but that tweet seemed too stupid even for them.

Yeah, no. There's a massive difference between signal boosting something and shining a light on it.

Instead of posting that you could have Googled that "pastor," gotten his contact information, and told him yourself about how he's a modern-day pharisee.

Instead you decided it would be better to tell atheists to stop pointing out how ungodly a lot of Christian really are and that we should just wait until you and the rest of the "good" Christians feel the time is right to confront them.

There should have been multiple church congregations there the next day tearing down that sign, but there weren't. And there won't ever be.

Because, like every Republican who won't say 'boo' about Trump's racism because they don't want to be seen as criticizing a fellow Republican (and, deep down, a lot of them feel the same), "good" Christians won't ever confront the fact their ranks are filled with pieces of sh*t because they don't want to be seen as criticizing their religious brothers and sisters. It's being loyal to a group over living the values that group is supposed to represent.

I'm not an atheist, but I'm also not happy with the way American Christianity across the board has decided that their racism is more important than how Christ told them to behave.

I am an atheist at this point, but my parents are both ministers.
American Christianity has NOT decided that racism is more important than Christ’s teachings.
Certain groups who use the name “Christian” have done that, but there is also a large group of people who are Christian and who are fighting the Pharisees within the church and fighting to make positive change in the world.

They just don’t get the press.

And yes, there should be multiple congregations protesting the posted sign and speaking out.
Some may be doing that in the local environment. There may be outreach and letters to the editor and public discussion that isn’t being amplified. If it isn’t being done, it should be.

And it is very hard not to paint all Christians with the same brush. I am uncomfortable when I hear people identify as Christian at this point.

I guess I should clarify that when I said "American Christianity" I meant the fusion of state religion and evangelical/fundamentalist churches that dominates the right-wing of Christianity in America. There are Christians in America who aren't like that, and who are actively working to do things like helping the refugees.

in our house, we call those groups “fundy “ or “whackadoodles” or “ Republicans”.

If everyone stopped paying attention to it, it would stop happening.

I think most people’s mental health and our country in general would be better off if we stopped watching 24 hour news (via whatever media) and instead focused on things that actually matter.

So full on normalize it?

Yeah, I'm not sure sticking our heads in the sand is there best option right now.

Maybe he meant instead of staring in horror at everything Trump does, to work on countering it in whatever ways we can?

If you are a POC you don’t have the same luxuries of white people to pick and choose what horrible things to ignore

Principle of charity please folks?

The antecedent of "it" in LeapingGnome's post was unclear but surely we could err on the side of assuming they probably weren't suggesting everyone should ignore everything Trump does so that it can become normalized.

I think his point is pretty clearly spelled out.

Everyone can choose to shut off the TV or choose not to read news. Real life will continue to impact us but we can always choose to reduce our personal exposure to the things we have control over.
