Marvel Media (Spoiler Thread)

I'm pretty sure that the main reason that Captain Marvel didn't get that much time in Endgame was because they were shooting Captain Marvel after Endgame. Brie Larson's Endgame scenes were filmed prior to Captain Marvel's filming.

Maybe, but what the directors said that the focus was to wrap up most of the story lines of the original Avengers. At least with Lange and the Guardians, you already had characters that you knew well and understood their motivations.

Saw FFH last night and while I liked it I can't help but be annoyed by two things.

1. I am sick of seeing Peter cry. I was sick of it after Spider-man 2 when Toby cried all the freaking time and I am still sick of it. I wonder if writers/directors use that as a lazy way show depth.

2. I am tired of the huge battles at the end. The hundreds of drones just felt over done. Like they thought it couldn't work to have a small final battle. I liked in Homecoming that even the final battle was small.

Overall a good story and I like the world.

I do agree that the stakes seemed a bit too high for the movie.

Note I do enjoy the two actors that were the teachers. They play idiots really well.

Yes, I thought the teachers had a good chemistry with each other and the class.

I really enjoyed it. I had zero history in regards to Mysterio so from that perspective the plot worked fine.

In regards to the 1st stinger

someone said they thought mysterio was alive but that one guy downloaded the resources so he most likely just doctored up the footage. Mysterio is dead.

I like how well Tom Holland and Spider-Man act like a real person. The times he gets emotional seem real and much different then the first trilogy.

Lol

Saw Far From Home today. I have never really been a big Tom Holland fan for Spider-man but this one I actually enjoyed. I think it might be my favorite Marvel movie this year. I knew what Mysterio was supposed to be and was surprised with the direction the movie was going at the beginning but really enjoyed how it changed after the elementals were defeated.

Taika Waititi will return to direct Thor 4

Thor 4 is moving ahead in development, with Taika Waititi returning to direct the latest installment, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This, however, means that his other blockbuster project — the long-gestating manga adaptation Akira — will be put on hold for the foreseeable future.

Waititi’s take on the Asgardian hero with Thor: Ragnarok reinvigorated the Avenger, giving a fresh and funny take on the previous long and dreary Thor movies. Avengers: Endgame found Thor with a new outlook on life, going through a dark depression but ultimately coming out of it with a new perspective and feeling of worth. At the end of the movie, he joins the Guardians of the Galaxy as they embark on a search for Gamora.

With Asgard now settled comfortably in a small Scandinavian cove — and Valkyrie leading them as king — Thor is free to go on all the adventures he chooses. Whether or not he’ll make an appearance in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 or if his next movie will be Thor 4 is still unknown.

Thor 4 does not have a set release date — in fact, it wasn’t even slated for the next bout of Phase 4 MCU movies. Waititi, meanwhile, next lands in theaters on Oct. 18 with Jojo Rabbit, a dark comedy about a young German boy in World War II whose only friend is an imaginary (and ethnically incorrect) version of Adolf Hitler.

Huh. Interesting that they are breaking their three movie sets for the individual heroes. Thor will get 4, Iron Man & Cap will have 3, and Ant-Man will probably only have 2. Who knows about Spidey, Doc Strange, and Black Panther.

You shut your mouth, Ant-Man needs to have ALL THE MOVIES.

I like the Ant Man films. I want Ant Men and Wasps.

Let's all be honest here. We really just want Luis.

Yes Luis (and the other two cons as well) are a big part of why I hope we get more Ant-Man movies. They're so fun!

Let's see, so far they've announced Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, The Eternals, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, Thor: Love And Thunder*, Black Widow and...probably more as I type just this much.

* = With Natalie Portman as Thor.

Edit: BLADE starring Mahershala Ali!

Impossible. Wesley Snipes is still very much Blade.

BLADE!

I'm incredibly underwhelmed by the Phase 4 announcements:

IMAGE(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D_91KD0U4AA7FE3.jpg)

It really feels like they're scraping the bottom of the IP barrel already. Like, if we're already to the point that we're doing a What If series, why not bring in Multiple Man? How about Moon Knight? Silver Sable? How about some of the weird UK stuff like Death's Head? Surely the perfectly adequate Runaways isn't crowding out the space for Young Justice or a reboot of the New Warriors, right?

Why aren't the X-Men or Fantastic Four in there?

And legit lol at Moon Knight!

Oh that is all the tv shows they will have streaming.

What If is going to be their streaming service, so of course they're scraping the bottom of the barrel! They're not going to burn a possible billion dollar movie concept/character on a streaming platform incentive. So they're putting up "You liked these guys, right?!" in the form of Loki, Falcon/Winter Soldier, WandaVision (ugh, that name) and Hawkeye plus a bonus "What If" series that likely is at best animated.

Meanwhile Shang-chi has the potential to be a fun martial arts film (alongside the Mulan remake), I'll see Thor just for Taika alone (and morbid curiosity to see if Natalie Portman decides to act this time) and Blade... well, I did love Mahershala Ali in Luke Cage.

I'm incredibly uninterested in Black Widow and Dr. Strange 2. I have no clue what Eternals are, so probably previews on that one.

Yeah, I'm seeing X-men and F4 announcements now, so I'm not quite sure what this is. Are Black Widow, Thor, and Dr. Strange direct to streaming? I don't think Natalie Portman would have touched it if it wasn't in theatres.

(Side note, it's not that Portman phoned it in during original Thor, it's that she's incredibly bad at portraying normal human people with normal human motivations. She's been a Hollywood star since she was a pre-teen. Her sense of normality is way too warped to play anyone who's not a natural prodigy laser-focused on their craft. So, I dunno, maybe playing a norse god will be a good turn for her.)

Even if this is TV, it's still weird. There must be some kind of exclusion period with all their Netflix stuff, because you'd think they'd at least try rebooting Iron Fist since that was received so poorly.

Scattered and maybe not coherent thoughts below because it's 3 AM and apparently I'm not sleeping much tonight.

1. Black Widow
Black Widow was sort of a weird character in the comics, and I don't think anyone really knows what to do with her in the MCU. And Scarlet Johansen's recent weirdness make me really uninterested in where this is going.

2. Eternals
I thought I had a pretty deep Marvel lore reservoir, even if I haven't read a superhero comic in like 5 years. This one's completely new to me. I dunno, I think Marvel really wanes the further they get from street level heroes, so million year old immortals seems like a stretch.

3. Falcon and the Winter Soldier
It's fine. I know the actors had great chemistry and all, but it kind of seems like a series that's looking for a concept. Sometimes those kind of things stumble onto TV gold, but more often they just belly flop.

4. Shang-Chi
Cautiously optimistic. Hollywood is generally bad at martial arts action, so it'll be interesting to see if they've learned any lessons since the Jackie Chan/Jet Li crossover era.

5. Wanda Vision
Does anyone give a crap about these characters? MCU sure looks like it's making a DCU mistake here, and forcing a storyline that originally took a pretty long time to develop.

6. Loki
I love Tom Hiddleston. He's great in everything, on and offscreen. But. Loki in the MCU strikes me as a bit of a Joey from Friends situation. He's great in ensemble roles, but it seems to me that putting him directly in the spotlight might strip him of what makes him so appealing.

7. Dr. Strange and the Lovecraftian Allusion
I thought the first movie was incredibly boring. I know others think it's one of the highlights of the MCU. But then again, I've never really understood the appeal of the character. Dr. Strange is really at his best when he shows up in a supporting role as an oracle, or to explain a MacGuffin. As a main character, I've never really understood who he was supposed to be, or what his motivations were. Frankly, I don't think the MCU has improved on this much.

8. What If?
If this is in the spirit of the original What If, it could be amazing.

9. Hawkeye
Nobody wanted more of this particular character. Nobody wanted more Jeremy Renner. Hawkeye in the comics is a lot more interesting character than he has a right to be, and the Hawkguy series has given him even more facets. MCU Hawkeye is a dud. And I don't know how you reconcile him with the comics version. (Recasting him might help.)

10. Thor
I'm here for whatever Taika Waititi wants to do.

11. Blade
Mahersha Ali is a great pull. That said, this franchise is in a weird place given the cult status of the original Blade films. It doesn't have the lowered expectations of the original, but it's still got to meet that level of quality(? affection? entertainment?). And look, I wonder if Ali can fill Wesley Snipes' shoes here. Like, yeah, that sounds crazy on the face of it, but back in the early 90's Snipes was the guy that Mahersha Ali is right now. He had the same soulful gravity, he had a backlist of critical successes working with guys like Spike Lee. We remember him now as kind of a weirdo action star, but Snipes had legit talent, and when he did Blade, he brought that talent to bear in the last gasp of his career. Those movies flat out don't work with a lesser actor, one who couldn't buy in fully to the intensity, who couldn't communicate the sense of repression, and who couldn't project the same aura that made Snipes an A-lister for a brief period of time. I dunno, maybe the point here is that those were weird movies, and it was a minor miracle that they came off at all. And it's real hard to write vampire storylines today that don't feel hackneyed.

I feel like about half of these needed to be one offs or recurring segments in some kind of Avengers: World's Greatest Heroes streaming show. Or maybe go full West Coast Avengers if you need to invent a reason why the characters with $30 million dollar actors aren't there.

After the years of really entertaining movies they get my optimism that these movies will also be worth my money and time. Oh and a Moon Knight show on a streaming platform similar in scope/material to Daredevil - yes please. That's a role made for Tom Hardy.

Moon Knight to me was always Batman with a "what, no killing people? F*ck that, let the bodies hit the floor!" mentality.

Some of things obviously missing:

Spiderman 3, etc.
Antman?
Black Panther 2
Deadpool, which I understand may go back and forth between "MCU" PG-13 and regular R rated Deadpool, and may even show up in Spiderman 3 first?

They did mention Mutant and Fantastic 4. Maybe some of those are 2023?

Another thought, no big team up in Phase 4, unless maybe there's something that's a stealth team up like Civil War.

Ug, Natalie Portman.
Which is funny because 15-20 year ago me would be all over that.

Jane Foster's character arc in Thor was pretty much "Brilliant scientist who falls in love with a hobo because he's hot.". I don't blame her for not putting a lot into that character, because she might have gotten the literally least-interesting writing of every character in the entire MCU.

For those who aren't into comics, Jane Foster became Thor for several years, and it was absolutely goddamn amazing, and is one of the best comic runs of the last five years. If they can grab any of the magic of that run, I'm completely on board for this.

Spoiler:

Wasn't part of that where she had cancer, and the more time she spent as Thor, the sicker she got?

Phase four looks incredible, bummed a bit that Black Panther and Captain Marvel are bumped to Phase 5, but the movies look daring in a way they haven't been since the beginning. If Disney+ ever actually launches outside the US I think I'm signing up.

And big bonus, no team up movie! It's like they listened to everything I wanted.

That is a very Fraction/Aja-looking Hawkguy logo.

Not sure about the bumping. At the end of the panel, right before Blade was introduced, they definitely mentioned Captain Marvel 2. So it's still coming, maybe a part of this phase even, they just weren't ready to preview it.
