iOS Games Thread Catch All

Steam controllers are great and multifunctional. I think that's why they are so expensive...

Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but my daughter (now 10) loved playing Tiny Thief and Love You To Bits with me over the years. Now she's hoping to play another game along those lines with me. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Maybe also ask in the “game recommendation for kids” thread:

You’re connecting a controller to your PC and display on an iOS device, yes? So what’s keeping you from using a XB or PS controller?

The PC is too far away from where I wanted to use this so it didn't work to have the controller connected to the PC. I was hoping to connect the controller through the iPhone. Looks like only MFi and Steam controllers work that way tho.

If you are serious about getting an MFi controller you should look into the Nimbus brand.

I'll take a look. Thanks!

Good news. Looks like iOS is getting PS4 and Xbox controller support in iOS 13:

That’s pretty great!

Does the Steam controller link to iOS? How about Xbox?

PS4, Xbox One, and Steam Controller all connect over Bluetooth. The only iOS controller update I've heard about was specifically support for Xbox One and PS4 but perhaps it has wider support for other Bluetooth controllers as well.

I'm glad I decided against buying a MFi controller for my last work trip.

I am stoked that they've added mouse support to iPad. One more baby step to making a MacBook form-factor iPad!

Got a new recommendation for y'all: One Deck Dungeon. It's instantly become one of my favorite iOS games of all time! It's been out on iPad for a while, but just recently got updated with iPhone support as well. (They did make a multi-page interface to view the "gameboard", which works great, so everything is still normal-size, not tiny.)

It's an adaptation of the physical "board game" (with actually no board, but just a set of cards, a bunch of dice, and a few marker tokens) of the same name. The iOS app ticks all of the boxes of stuff I'm generally looking for in a mobile game:

- Portrait orientation
- Turn-based gameplay
- Game state is always automatically saved
- Fast and punchy, yet interesting, combat (and also "overcome an obstacle/trap" encounters)
- Interesting decision-making with respect to character build/upgrades
- An interesting progression system across multiple games. (You can unlock upgrades for each character that carry over to future games.)
- Premium game, so all design decisions are based on "what's fun", not "how can we frustrate the player into paying more $" (stamina timers, premium currencies, ads, etc.)
- Fast and easy-to-use UI

It even goes above and beyond in a few areas:

- The game seems to do a great job of having a minimal memory footprint. It can survive being in the background while you use other apps for a while, and then you can switch back to the game and be right where you were, without the app having to reload itself into memory and you having to click back through to your in-progress game from the main menu.
- Plenty of content in the base game, but extra content also available via paid DLCs, both in a few $0.99 micro-purchases, and one larger pack that is itself as large as the base game.

It's by Handelabra, the same folks who did the nice Sentinels of the Multiverse iPad implementation. https://www.handelabra.com/onedeckdu...

Good to hear. Kit and I have the physical version of the "Forest of Shadows" stand-alone expansion. We've never played the original. I'll pick this up on iOS for sure.

Thanks for the head's up.

If anyone wanted to play the physical version of One Deck Dungeon + Standalone expansion for free* you can download full res print and play from Kickstarter, file links are a little ways down the page...

I've just made base game, just sorting out skinning an old box with the cover art.

Nintendo DS Classic ‘Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box’ Is Now Available on the App Store and Google Play Worldwide

Today is a good day to be a fan of puzzle games on mobile. I wrote about how Level-5 was teasing a localistion of Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box ahead of Anime Expo 2019 and it has now released on the App Store and Google Play worldwide. The Japanese release of the second Layton game happened a while ago bringing another Nintendo DS classic to iOS and Android with high resolution visuals.

ThatGameCompany's free to play thing is out.

You walk/fly around and collect emotes and activate glowy magical things which isn't going to blow anyone's mind in terms of gameplay, but it sure is pretty.

There's currency available without paying, but it seems like it's only for cosmetics and more elaborate emotes anyways.

Thanks to everyone who mentioned Konami Pixel Puzzle Collection. I just completed 100% of the puzzles. This apparently opens up expert mode which lets you redo all the puzzles, but you can't X out blank squares. So... that's a big NOPE for me, since I've no clue how I could live without that ability.

Ahh, you beat me. I’m at 90% and still chipping away. Great game for the low price of free.

I recently also got to 90%, but I found out I have completed all the non-boss levels. Since the game only allows you to play one boss level every 3 hours, the next 50 puzzles will take a very long time. Not a good way to end, but it has been one of the best Picross games on the iPad.

So, 3 weeks later I've now finished all the boss levels. The expert mode does not allow you to X squares, but if a row is solved, the game will put in the X's for you. Often, I was not using X's already, so I'm going to try to progress through the expert mode. There seems to be some more puzzles added as well. Finally, the boss puzzles are no longer time locked.

This is one of the best Picross apps on the iPad.

And about 3.5 months later, I've finished expert mode. Nothing more to unlock. Great game.

I'm at about 94.9% through expert. 1 through 4 star puzzles are really not significantly tougher with the no x's restriction but these 5 star ones can be pretty tricky.

Not iOS as far as I know, but I recently came across Pictopix on PC via Steam. Hundreds of puzzles, good implementation that stays out of the way, and only $7. I'm a bit embarrassed to say I bought it 6 days ago and I've already put 20 hours into it...

Just got 100% of the achievements in Dungeon Warfare 2. It's great. Would still recommend.

Rise and Fall is out for Civ 6, though it’s not populated everywhere yet. It’s $29.99 USD.

Civ 6 full unlock is discounted as well, down to $14.99 USD (I think) along with most of the current DLC (up to Persia/Macedonia).

They also added full async multiplayer.

Woot! Looks like also a half dozen civs each with a scenario for $2 each a la carte.

Yep. The discount. They’re usually $4.99 USD each.

I haven't played One Deck Dungeon, but from what I can see of it on the App Store, you fans might also enjoy Void Tyrant. It's another card-based dungeon crawler. I'm not too deep in, so I haven't figured out the limitations of the micro-transaction system, but I haven't had any issues with playing it completely free so far.

+1 for Void Tyrant, it's pretty fun.

One wish I have for that game is if it would show you how many of each card are left in your draw pile (like the Carcassone app does), so you wouldn't have to "count cards". (Your deck consists of a fixed number of cards each numbered 1 through 6, and the basic idea of the combat system is you're trying to draw cards to get as close to a total of 12 as you can without going over.)

I’m surprised this hasn’t been posted already. New brough-like. It’s very good.

No rules explained. Cool and weird art. Learn as you go. Minutes to learn. Hours to master. Unless you’re me. In which case, it’s never will master. I still love it.

Euclidea by HORIS INTERNATIONAL LIMITED

This one was mentioned by a podcast guest a few weeks ago. It’s insanely difficult once you get past the first few puzzles. So fascinating though.

I wish I could find guides on how to master these concepts rather than just solutions to the puzzles. All of the euclidian geometry stuff on YouTube deals with numbers and formulas. There are no numbers in this game. At least not as far as I’ve gotten. Only tools for creating circles and lines.

Math nerds need to check this out.

Euclidea is also available in-browser which lends it to being well-suited for playing during short breaks at work and you can create an account to enable cross-play/cross-save between PC and your mobile device. And if you end up liking Euclidea or other math-based games, I recommend checking out Pythagorea.

Oh my. I recently revived Imbroglio (again) and at this point it's probably my most played game ever. (I didn't stick around long enough to get the feel for his Portuguese one, though.) I will download this new on immediately.
