Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

How'd the Dreamcast do it? I know this is way off-topic at this point, but I don't remember. I just know Peter Moore was involved with the Dreamcast in enough of a capacity that it explains a lot of why the original Xbox was what it was, including getting a lot of SEGA properties on the system.

Too lazy/busy. Bought new Joycons last week instead. Old ones have been relegated to the occasional P4 in local multiplayer.

I remember the Dreamcast being not-confusing....

It looks like a huge amount of pain due to small ribbon cables and glue Nintendo uses in a small package.

I bought the Hori NON wireless left version as a stop gap.

Wait...

Are you guys talking about buttons being "reversed" in the sense of which one accepts and which one cancels or are you talking about the order they're in on the controller, like AB vs BA?

Yes.

We're talking about a lack of consistency.

Both. The Dreamcast above and Xbox reversed the A/B and X/Y buttons to be different from Nintendo, whereas Sony came up with different symbols.

But also Xbox switched the confirm/accept tradition of right button accepts and bottom button cancels. Sony sticks with it in Japan but changes in America. Doubly confusing.

Yup. Double-checked and the Japanese version of the Dreamcast controller is the same as the one in the states.

Which could mean that SEGA was simply doing it their own way all along, and until the original Xbox was the outlier since, in Japan and the start of PlayStation games localization, which face button was confirm was consistent between Nintendo and Sony (Final Fantasy VII still has it the traditional/Japanese way). As noted, Genesis was A-B-C buttons left to right, so the Dreamcast being swapped is kind of brand consistent.

I mean, really, it's just a silly mess of trivia that has a tendency to come up should someone claim Nintendo of being the ones that are backwards.

If you chop the C and Z buttons off the Sega Saturn controller, what's left is essentially the Dreamcast/Xbox arrangement, just slightly tilted. It's very easy to see how it went from that to the Dreamcast layout.

I have that question too. Mine started drifting a few days ago. Time to buy new joycons.

I took the right joycon from mine and put it on my wife's since she plays in handheld mode. I ordered a cheap new stick and will replace the one in her old one when/if it ever gets here.

Another weird thing is her volume Up button doesn't work, but the down does. She can change it in the software volume controls. I haven't searched on that, yet, but will after posting this.

It appears to be a hardware issue as it won't even to into recovery mode. Oh well. Sucks.

Next console needs to differentiate itself and come out with:

X Y
B A

That'll work!

Hey everyone! Long time no see! Pretty sure there hasn't been much Nintendo news since I last posted back in April...

...
...
...crap.

8BitDo has been teasing that controller for like a year, I think it was originally supposed to be out for holiday 2018? I keep holding off on buying the regular SN30 Pro as my main Switch/emulation controller because I know a week after I do they'll finally announce when the Plus comes out.

Edit: frell me it's finally up on Amazon for pre-order with a release date.

And here's the Amazon Link

Damn, it's only $5 more than the original SN30 Pro. There's...really no reason to not get the new version.

Though if they drop the price on the regular Pro, I'll be all over that. I really don't see myself needing the fancy programming, and the handles are more nice to have than required.

Yup! There are a number of repair kits on amazon that ship with the replacement part and the tools needed to swap it. I got the cheapest one available at the time for something like $9 and followed a guide on YouTube.

There are a couple of ribbon cables that are a little finicky, but so long as you’re careful it should be fine. Took me about half an hour all together a few months ago and I haven’t had any drifting problems since.

Bunch of Switch news this morning.

Updated model of the original Switch announced with extended battery life. That's evidently the only improvement, and it effectively doubles how long the battery will last. It goes on sale in Japan in August, no info on the American launch of the new model.

New Joy-Con colors available 10/4.

Luigi's Mansion 3 on sale Halloween, 10/31.

The last one is the big news for me. Proceed to gripe about the lack of a Pro model, or how you insist this isn't the actual hardware revision and they still gotta be working on something for only the most elite of gamers.

Saw the new joycons up for pre-order at Best Buy already sheesh.

That's a proper good improvement on battery life. Awesome. Pleased with that.

The purple and orange Joy-Cons are what may find their way as our additional set. Cool!

You know, I enjoyed Luigi's Mansion back when, from what I remember. I own LM2 and have yet to play. Perhaps I should remedy this?

Pro Model? Ha! Salty! I assume you don't have any criticisms or hopes that not everyone agrees with. That must be nice.

In a world where we have a PS4 Slim to a PS4 Pro, an Xbox One S to an Xbox One X, and Minimum Spec PC to High End PC, I'm not following the concerns. It's somewhat similar to televisions, record players, mobile phones, even fridges. They all do the same thing, but with improved features and performance the more you spend. Options for those who aren't fussed about bells and whistles. Options for those that are. A single model is, of course, perfectly sustainable. Perhaps for the better, arguably. Demand is what it is, though, and it is simply in line with tech progression, for better or worse. It's hardly a dedicated gaming issue, no matter how hard that narrative is peddled.

Having bought the Smash Bros Switch, I'd prefer just upgrading my current battery. Oh well.

So here's a question about the joy-con drift issue: do any of you know if there are any joystick replacements that are actually BETTER then the ones that come standard? I am looking at replacing at least one stick and was kind of hoping some manufacturer had released a better, more sturdy joy stick so I'm not doing this again 6 months from now.

Looking back at the PS4 and XBox release dates, Nintendo seems to be right on schedule. Microsoft put out the smaller-but-similar-specs Xbox One S about 30 months after the initial release. The Lite Switch will be about 30 months after the original Switch. Sony's PS4 Slim took a little longer, arriving just a couple of months ahead of the Pro.

Significantly bumping the CPU and GPU took three years for Sony (PS4 Pro) and four for Microsoft (XBox One X). That suggests a release in 2020 or even early 2021 for something like a Switch Pro.

Switch Semi-Pro.

Not the most exciting news but good. It should encourage people to pick one up in they haven't but won't make those of us with original models feel like we have to buy one.

This is likely the same battery increase we saw with the Switch Lite, except the bigger device likely has a larger battery inside. Same Switch, but with more efficient innards. The die shrink also helps everything fit inside the Switch Lite.

Real shame we aren't getting a CPU/GPU speed increase with it. Even a small bump a la the NEW series was what I was hoping for.

*sigh* Back to waiting on a Switch Pro.

Meh. I bought an ultra high capacity USB power pack a few months back. I get an entire 4 charges of the Switch out of it. I'm good.

I don't know if these are better but I got this pair of sticks for $12.

It took me about 30 minutes to remove the old stick, install the new one and put the joycon back together. Finally, no more drifting. It was much easier to do than I thought and it definitely gives me the confidence to just go ahead and get the atomic purple joycon shells and do it myself

Amazon link.

The thing is a beast. Takes literally days to charge if you're not using a decent-quality USB cable and a charger, so there's that.

Oh, I have that one. Yeah, it's amazing.
