It's never been a chore for me but I think the show can wax and wane a little bit depending on the games that are out (and the topics they inspire). There's been a nice run of bigger games lately which probably makes things easier for them.

Okay, folks, we've got to talk about Waypoint Radio right now.

I think I've made it known pretty far and wide that I feel like they're the best thing going in games related podcasting right now, and that if you aren't listening to every episode you might be doing something wrong. But at the same time, I get it. They're all about five star podcasts with five star runtimes, and some people just don't have five star listening blocks available.

But do check in this week if you normally dip in and out. Not only are they on a hell of a tear with their series of shows talking about Evangelion, but yesterday's game industry draft episode is just spectacular. It's an actual play podcast of them playing a game about the game of gaming the gaming industry. I mean, you like games, right?

(Also, remind me to NEVER play any game of strategy against Rob Zacny. Or Austin Walker, for that matter. And Cado -- he's quiet about it, but what my theory presupposes is, maybe he's the most dangerous of them all?)

I don’t know how I got turned onto it, but I’m listening to No One Can Know About This, a podcast where the two hosts are planning to play through every Final Fantasy game. I’m currently in Season 3 in which they play FFVI.

Hearing it made me need to play VI again. I don’t have a really convenient way to do so since it isn’t on Switch or 3DS. So here I lay in bed, playing FFVI on the Wii VC using my Wii U gamepad as a TV screen.

Anyway, good podcast. Would recommend.

Was just coming in here to post this, I mentioned it in the final fantasy thread awhile ago but it didn't seem like many were interested. It's so good though even if you're not a huge fan of the series these guys have great chemistry. It's also such a good idea for a show format I've tried finding similar things to no luck, if anyone knows of something with this format though let me know!

Based on this recommendation, I actually checked out No One Can Know About This yesterday, and I'm on Episode 3 of Season 1 (the original Final Fantasy).

For as much as these guys are suffering through a game that is almost unplayable by modern standards, the podcast is really entertaining! When I first read this post I thought the podcast might be pretty similar to Ultima Final Fantasy, where the hosts tried a similar project, but this is totally different as the hosts actually catalogue their play much more thoroughly. These guys are also super self-aware, and it is interesting, and very relatable, to hear their self doubt about being gamers (especially letting their non-gamer friends know about how into games they are) and why they are taking on this project in the first place. Totally would recommend.

edit:

I was trying to remember the name of a podcast that was on the tip of my tongue for a week, but I finally figured it out.

If you didn't follow Danielle Riendeau over to Fanwidth, this is a really good episode to check it out:

https://www.fanbyte.com/podcasts/fan...

Or, maybe really representative? They don't really talk about games for like the first half hour, then hit you with a bunch of belly laughs throughout the second half of the podcast, and I mostly remember a lot of talk about how Warframe is the video game version of a movie called Guyver which purported to star Mark Hamill but didn't.

I'm looking for a podcast which is similar to Three Moves Ahead, though it does not have to be about strategy games (or any one genre in particular). Here's some of the things I like about 3MA:

  • Episodes are about single games, not news-of-the-week style digests.
  • The panelists/hosts/guests are (mostly) professionals and not just fans.
  • The podcast stands on its own and is not a branch of a larger media entity.

Pretty much the only thing I don't love about 3MA is its infrequency, hence this request.

Off the top of my head:

No CB! is about Paradox grand strategy games . Main host Leana Hafer is an old 3MA alum. They occasionally have Paradox people on but the main panel is streamers/journalists.

Single Malt Strategy is a biweekly wargame/strategy podcast. Again mostly streamers with occasional interviews; recently they've spun off the interviews to a new podcast, Developer Dialogue.

Roguelike Radio has experienced devs/players as hosts/panel and often interviews more devs.

Explorminate is a 4X-focused podcast; I haven't listened in a while but they may fit your bill.

And of course there's hometown hero Veloxi with the Space Game Junkie Podcast

There are more on this list that I want to check but but I can't give a personal recommendation.

In the tabletop RPG space, +1 Forward is usually an interview with a PBTA designer including a short actual-play segment. Hacked In The Dark is similar for Forged In the Dark games, and A Systematic Understanding Of Everything for the Exalted RPG.

Explorminate completely changed tack a couple of months ago, mostly because none of them could really fit weekly podcasts and running the website into their day to day lives I think. So, rather than having a weekly podcast that discussed 4x and other gaming news followed by a topic - like a certain other podcast I can think of! - they now do it one an ad hoc schedule that more or less works out monthly. They usually discuss a bit of news and/or a single game, or carry an interview with a developer at the more indie end of the 4x genre. It has improved immeasurably since they have done this and I actually think I prefer it to 3MA.

This month's podcast carries an interview with Julian Gollup, one of the guys behind the original X-COM: Enemy Unknown that firaxis rebooted, and now the brain behind Snapshot games and Phoenix Point.

I'm actually quite surprised they've pulled that off considering just how unhappy one of their original hosts was about their decision to do the Epic Store exclusive, but it should be well worth a listen!

Hmm...

Cane and Rinse?

Left Behind Game Club?

I don’t know how “professional” the hosts are.

Seconding Cane and Rinse! I think the hosts are a mixture of "professionals" and fans, but they are always professional in their approach. One game per episode.

I actually already subscribe to eXplorminate, Roguelike Radio, and SGJ. Single Malt Strategy looks promising; I'll give it a listen!

I began listening to an old episode of Cane and Rinse and it has been good so far. Thanks!

For 3MA I meant "professional" in the sense that they're either in the game industry or are game journalists.

Glad to hear it! Hope you enjoy Cane and Rinse. They have a huge backlog of old episodes.

Left Behind Games is very similar but younger hosts and less British.

So, if you're like me, you have lost several hours of entertainment from the GB... thing. What are people listening to in the game space now a days?

Start listening to the Bombcast/Beastcast from episode one. That's three thousand hours of content right there.

Garnett Lee (of Weekend Confirmed and 1UP fame), has just gotten back on the bandwagon with a new podcast called "Games, Potatoes, and Spatulas". I have yet to listen to it, but considering used to be a very controversial figure around here previously, I thought someone here might want to try it out.

I kinda like the Conference Call from Gamers With Jobs. Heard of it?

Dan Ryckert, Mary Kish, and Mike Mahardy (not sure on spelling) Have started a podcast called Fire Escape Cast. Might be a replacement for those that don't hate Dan. I happen to love Mary and enjoy 'good' Dan so it's been added to my list.

DLC has taken the generally upbeat podcast about games when I got sick of GB just hating on everything.

Good Game Nice Try is a podcast I've started in on, with the guy from Conan plays games and some streamer I didn't know existed. She is better than him, but they are a good combo.

Also G4 is ramping up and Adam is doing regular content on twitch/youtube I am hoping gets put into a podcast format at some point.

On the PC games side, I've always enjoyed The Crate and Crowbar

They have a podcast? How long has that been going?

Waypoint Radio, Kinda Funny (assorted), The Retro Hour, DLC, This Week in Retro

I loved it.

I listen to IGN's Beyond! They have great folks on there now. The MinnMax Show is always an enjoyable and now has more Janet Garcia. Game Maker's Notebook is excellent interviews with developers. Play, Watch, Listen is a must listen for me every week. I watch it on YouTube. I presume it's also a podcast. I listen to bits and pieces of Kinda Funny's output.

What's Good Games is hosted by 3 funny ladies with broad tastes in games. MinnMax is also good, hosted by some of the folks who left Game Informer a while back.

Triple Click, hosted by Jason Schreier and two of his former Kotaku colleagues. Highly recommended.

To those who listen to What’s Good Games, what’s up with the hellos at the beginning?

It sounds like you’re making fun of an Asian stereotype, but they can’t be that, can they?

I really want to like this show, because I want to support three women talking about video games. But I just can’t get past that introduction, unless someone can tell me that it’s really not what it sounds like.

I haven't listed for a bit. Is it something they do every episode?

I needed to give the show a break because, although I like the hosts' personalities when they actually discuss games, a lot of the show is simply them reading news in the form of verbatim press releases or articles. They sound so bored and monotonous sometimes that they often rush through and read the text with no inflection or emphasis. I'd rather they write their own copy and make it their own.

Kinda Funny Daily is also very samey with its production where it too can feel very rote and repetitive. I usually just listen to Whitta Wednesdays (on Tuesday).

If you're into RPGs, try Axe of the Blood God. It's Kat Bailey and Nadia Oxford talking all things RPGs. It used to be a USGamer podcast, but after that shut down, they spun it out to it's own thing with Patreon support.

They've recently done episodes on Indie RPGs to watch in 2021, The Women of Final Fantasy, and a series called "The Consle RPG Quest" where each episode is a mini retrospective on RPGs for specific consoles. The most recent one was for the Playstation Vita.
