Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

It's too bad that it doesn't have video output in some fashion. If it did it would be perfect for my usage. A lighter, more travel friendly system, that could still hook up to a big screen and use the pro controller.

My main question is will the Lite even output to a TV with a 3rd party adapter like the OG Switch? If not, that's a big bummer.

I get that the device won't fit in the dock properly, but I'd love to be able to push the Lite to a TV via the bottom USB C connector. I fear they've straight turned off that function.

The price is much nicer but I think I'll still wait for the New Switch. No rush considering the portable library I already have.

No video out and no Joycons is an interesting proposition. Intellectually interesting that is, but I can't see me getting one. One of my Switch's primary use cases is multiplayer family gaming, and a portable-only ain't gonna fly for that.

For me it makes sense as I'm 100% handheld.. I'll probably give away my Switch and dock and just use this as a handheld exclusively so the whole two Switch one digital library won't affect me.

Before you give that away, please give me a shot at buying it for my stepfather. He has my old Wii-U at his house for the Grandkids and he has been playing Zelda BOTW on it now for a couple months and is interested in a Switch but can't afford a new one. I told him to hold off in case something was announced this year but he will be docked only so this Lite thing won't work for him.

I'm guessing they didn't put the video over USB hardware in there. Otherwise I think they would have said optional output.

Yes, with Online subscription. There are a few (couple?) games that don't allow for cloud saves though.

But can you actually login to two Switch systems at once? I had to do a system transfer when I upgraded to the Smash Bros Switch.

I would totally buy this just for the d-pad but if you can't be registered and playing on two devices at once it's useless.

This would be the deal breaker, how much of a problem will it be for me to play the games linked to my account on the new Switch while the boy continues to play them on the old?

If that isn't an issue then the Lite works for us in theory. The boy probably plays our switch on TV 70% of the time. When I get a chance it's exclusively handheld. Son also prefers joy cons in separate mode, I always have em connected.

So getting a Lite for myself would work nicely.

I'm hoping they didn't mention it at all in order not to confuse the message and the fact there's no official adapter from Nintendo (outside of the absurdly-priced dock).

It's a small hope, I imagine.

Haha, I hear you. Me too! Thanks for posting that link by the way. I didn't realize that third party adapters that didn't blow up the Switch USB port were available. This will be great for a couple upcoming vacations this summer.

If they had this available at launch I would have purchased the full system.

Now that I know how I actually use my Switch, I would prefer the Lite.

Doubt I’m going to buy it though, as my current Switch is fine and I don’t need to spend any more money.

The Lite does have a real D-pad on the left side, instead of the awkward 4-button setup, which might make it better for 8-direction-move games that demand precision diagonal inputs, like Celeste or Street Fighter.

That being said, I just this week bought https://www.amazon.com/HORI-D-Pad-Co... for $15 for my Switch, which does the same thing (and seems to work just fine for the limited time I’ve used it so far).

I'll wait for the Switch Pro. Not interested in part-time switches.

Making the Switch Lite handheld-only is pretty bullsh*t if you ask me. It's not like TV Out had to be sacrificed for size reasons.

I'd wager that not fitting into the dock properly is the main issue here. Otherwise why leave it off? I guess they could have made it wider to include it and then maybe beef up the battery? Not sure. Either way it is a weird omission, but it's definitely sending a message that it's the portable only version. Will be interesting to see the adoption rate. At the very least it drops a full hundred off the price, which is actually pretty great.

The special Pokemon edition is pretty cool:

Someone posted that really the name "Switch" is wrong.

They even had the clicking noise of removing the Joycons in the release ad.

People have been saying the name "Switch" would be wrong on a handheld-only device from day 1.

Hell, I've seen people arguing they might bring back the Gameboy name if they come out with a Switch Mini. Uh, no. lol

Yay, the Switch I'd actually want! I would never hook this up to my TV, but I'd have in my bag a lot.

What about heat? My Switch heats up plenty with some games when it's driving the TV. The smaller configuration will compromise cooling.

Not like they couldn't make a Switch Lite Dock to solve that. Could leave it out of the base package but available as a separate purchase for those who want to dock their Lites.

Thus making the outlay $350 ($80 dock + $70 Pro controller) to play a Switch Lite on TV? Don't see the value there.

The dock isn't the issue, they could have easily left in an option to use USB-C cable to hook it up to the TV. I have a 3rd party cable that does just that with my Switch and it works great.

In fact, they went out of their way to not include this. They must have removed the data pins from the USB-C on the Lite and left it charge-only.

My guess is piracy, makes it hard to hack.

Could also be that the way devs code their games with resolutions. When the Switch detects it's in "docked mode", it will raise the resolution a bit. Perhaps they couldn't fit in the cooling tech needed to handle this uprezzed mode. So instead of making devs leave the resolution in "handheld mode" while connected to a TV, they just removed it altogether.

I think it's an obvious SKU and makes a lot of sense. Price is also amazing. Well done, Nintendo.

I think the key to this SKU being interesting to those of us who already have a Switch would be if you can have games on more than 1 Switch at once and easily move saves around. I still don't have a handle on that yet.

Some info here. Transferring save data is not automatic, and you have one primary system that allows all users to play all your purchased games, but on non-primary systems only your account can play your purchases.

Ask someone that wants a more portable Switch but still wants to use it on a TV.

It makes sense for these things to not be bundled, but for a dock to not exist at all does not.

It's a Vita 2!

Thanks. I looked at those recently but hadn't seen enough reviews yet. I might consider it for a few games.

I'm guessing it's as simple as business decision not to muddy the waters with the higher end SKU. It costs $100 more and TV mode is probably it's biggest up-sell.

Yeah I think it’s super simple. The people who want a Switch that does both either have one or can buy the existing unit. The new one is for people who are more price sensitive or want one for their kids. The cross section of people that want a smaller Switch but also want TV out is too small to warrant the costs of ramping up production on a new dock.

ERA just had a thread go up today that has some other info.
