Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

Boo!

Blech. The more I think about Dark the more I hate it.

Into the Spiderverse is freaking amazing. Watched it a couple of days ago, and I thought it absolutely deserved all the praise I had read about it for months.

My wife and I loved the first series of Dark. We haven't watched the second series yet, but we will.

I've really been enjoying watching foreign language series, they have a very different feel to American or British series. I find them to be much more distinctive and interesting than Yet another Zombie, Vampire or Serial Killer series. There are an awful lot of very similar shows on Netflix and Amazon Prime, and ones made elsewhere have a different feel, and have a different looking cast. I swear there are only 4 actors and their uncountable clones who play teenagers in every single British and American show.

Are you guys watching the foreign stuff in english or subtitled? Haven't started Dark yet but I'm on season 3 of 3% which I'm watching in English.

Subtitled.

A huge part of an actor's performance is their voice and the emotion that comes through during a scene. A major part of that gets lost when someone who's not them is trying to replicate it by themselves in a recording booth. Even if you miss out on part of the subtitle, you can tell a lot by how the actor sounds.

I used to hate subs, but I have a friend who lost the hearing on one side from an ear infection. So when we watch stuff it's either crank the volume to deaf grandpa levels or turn on subs. Now they've grown on me and I pretty much have them on all the time.

I dunno, the other three Spider-people definitely didn't add to the plot much but consequently didn't take up that much screen time on their own, imo. They were around for some fights and got a few solo lines, but otherwise were just window dressing.

They also let the animators strut. It's a beautifully animated film on multiple levels, but one of the more clever and flashy things they do is using different styles of animation for each universe. The differences between Miles's, Peter's, and Gwen's universes are subtle, but the other three are wildly different from those and from each other. They let the animators break loose and show off the depth of their skills in much the same way that Miles strives to throughout the film. It's not just flashy animation, it's thematically resonant flashy animation.

The individual animators were also allowed to go and show off a lot of the process if you want to go dig through their twitter feeds.

Even if he/she lost hearing on one side, there's no need to crank up the volume. Especially considering there's only one functional ear left. Gotta protect that baby.

I also always use subtitles, but that's a cultural thing from my country.

At the risk of sharing something political and absolutely relevant to today’s politics, Tricky Dick and the Man in Black was a really great documentary about Nixon, the Southern Strategy, and his attempt to use Johnny Cash as a way to appeal to white southerners.

Look for the next book in the series: Harry Potter and the Staff of Slytherine

I'm confused. Why are the ladies wearing so much clothing? It's breaking my immersion.

Speaking of immersion: If a close-up of Cavil’s hair doesn’t make the frame-rate drop from 24 to 12, I will be sorely disappointed.

There's a lot to be confused by, like why doesn't Geralt have a scar and why does he only have one sword? And will the fight choreography be as bad as the actual fighting in the game?

I gets much better in season 3 but it's still pretty bad.

One of the choreographers made a cut where the combat is so much better.

But then George Lucas did a Director's Cut where Geralt shot second.

And the horse keeps ending up on a roof.

I wonder if the director instructed the actor playing Geralt to pause and count to ten every time he has to change his walking speed or direction.

They've allowed him to use an alternative method for getting around during retakes where he simply lurches in the direction he wants to go, falling into a full sprint to cover even short distances.

Goes over some of the changes netflix made to neon genesis evangelion.

Watched the first episode of season 3 of Stranger Things, didn't care for it. Also watched the first two episodes of Dark, really liked it. I can see why people compare the two shows but they don't seem to have anything in common except nostalgia. The tone is different. Different types of sci fi stuff is going on. The look and feel are way different. One is full of fun and the other is all dread.

Stranger Things: Season 3, Episode 5ish.

Spoiler:

I didn't know until now that the ultimate 80s crossover we've never had is Magnum PI versus The Terminator.

Trawling for a trashy movie last night, I came across Kin, about a boy in Detroit who finds a "ray gun" in an abandoned factory. From there it kind of turns into a dark Thelma and Louise, but with a cooler soundtrack and guns. I thought it worked, better than I was expecting from a random pick!

Did you watch the previous seasons? Episode 1 is very much the calm before the storm..
