Super Mario Makers Catch-All

Well, this is disappointing: Super Mario Maker 2’s paid online mode won’t let you matchmake with friends. Hopefully it can be rectified in the future.

I can see why they might choose to go that way, but it's definitely a let-down.

I swear Nintendo has a dartboard on their wall covered in Post-It notes that say things like "no online play with friends," "requires some dumb waggle thing nobody asked for," and "put basic functionality on a smartphone app for some reason" that they use to decide how they'll f*ck up their next otherwise perfect idea.

The E3 Treehouse info is mindblowing. MM2 is shaping up to be the full realization of the concept.

What new info did come out of there?

3 videos of them demoing it. I only watched the third which focused on the old school SNES and NES features. It's crazy that you can have MP SNES levels with Luigi, Toad, and Toadette or play with either single player. It's really ambitious what they shot for.

Awesome

I haven't caught any of the E3 coverage but hopefully will have time this weekend!

Chatting with a fellow afficionado over on Reddit has put the idea into my head of perhaps setting myself up to create my own Mario Maker channel over on YouTube. Seems like a bit of a hurdle between the equipment, getting everything figured out and setup, and then the time to record & edit videos.

How about you folks? Think there'd be enough interest to make it worthwhile, or is it just silly navel-gazing on my part? (I can't imagine there'll be any shortage of people putting their own Mario Maker 2 videos online)

The important question is if it would make you happy to do it. If so, then go for it. If not, then no size of audience will make it worthwhile.

Oh, I'm not looking to be some big YouTube celebrity or anything. It sounds like a fun project to me, but it feels... I dunno, vain? I may be outspoken when it comes to posting "anonymous" via text on forums, but outside of that I tend to be the person who doesn't seek the spotlight. So I guess what I'm really doing is looking for validation? I dunno.

I'm probably going to do it. Once I get an idea wormed into my head it's hard to get it back out.

If you're looking for validation, then:

It sounds like fun.

That's pretty much YouTube, yeah.

As a YouTuber that's gone nowhere and has had a roller coaster of emotions regarding feeling worthless and having extreme complexes regarding being unheard and all that other stuff I see a therapist for: do what sounds fun, quit if it stops being fun.

"It sounds like a fun project" is the best reason you can give something a try. If you're uncertain about it still, then do three or four test videos before even creating the channel just to see how much work it is and if it seems like something you would enjoy pursuing without it becoming a second job. It's what I wish I had done.

Speaking as someone who ran a semi-successful small business with a dozen employees making YouTube content for three years, YouTube is indifferent at best and actively hostile at worst to small and new content creators. Their algorithm is set up to push known moneymakers, not to guide eyeballs to new talent.

If you're looking to build an audience from scratch, YouTube is the last place to try to do it. Ten years ago (which is when my former company got its start) you could do that. Not now.

If you have a project that you're interested in doing anyway, and you're looking for someplace to host it so you can share it around to family and friends and through forums like this one, YouTube is still great for that. They're still a tech leader in the online streaming space, and they got where they are for a reason. They just suck at community management and fostering new talent.

I have a YouTube channel about synthesizer stuff. It’s just me shouting into the void, and I’m okay with that. Don’t get yourself into the mindset of having to churn out content, that way lies madness. Do what you want when you want, if people like it, all the better.

It’s the same way with releasing music or albums these days. The firehose of content and low barrier to entry means you should do it for yourself with no expectation of return or appreciation.

One week away from release. I can't wait.

Yes, I keep checking the date every day like a kid waiting for their birthday.

Two more sleeps.

You'll really want a stylus for this one.

Finally had some time today with the maker side and it went okay, though I did order a stylus. I’m thinking of actually making a series of entry-level boards aimed at young, young kids. Firstly for my own kids, but also tempted and simultaneously hesitant to upload them.

I tried using a 3DS stylus and that didn't work well at all. What is the stylus recommended for the Switch?

Also, going to take a while to come to grips with all the new features and the new layout of the editor. I do have an unpolished level 1-1 up though, just like with the last go-around I expect I'll make another pass on it later after I get some more time with the editor!

Just gave it a go. Nice flow to it. I didn't try for anything fancy, just a finish.

Spoiler:

Little devilish surprise there at the end :)

The Switch uses a different kind of touch screen from the 3DS and Wii U, so those ones won't work. You want any kind of tablet or smart phone stylus. I just grabbed a $10 one at Target that's marketed for iPads.

And if you are willing to wait a day or two, Amazon has bundles of styluses for even less.

Heck, you could probably walk into a Verizon or other cell phone company store and get one for free.

Really having a blast with the new Mario Maker! My daughter and I made our first level (CJV-F6M-DQF) but it hasn't been played. Do they take awhile to get uploaded to the servers or is it just luck of the draw? We never played the first game so weren't to sure on how it works.

Took me quite a few tries, but I got it beat. That P switch door though ... never got the timing right.

Aww thanks for trying it! She is having fun making the levels. The tools seem really neat I'm surprised by how easy it was to make something. Although I shouldn't have been surprised I know people really loved that first game.

Edit: promised my daughter Id post one more code I won't keep spamming but if anyone wants to try. My wife needed to upload it I couldn't beat it. WB9-DDK-PBG

My wife said I am just being mean now. But hey, my Mario 3 adventure needs to step up the challenge over my Mario 1 game! Still trying to make them feel like "real" Mario levels though. Not sure about this one... Level 1-2 is up now but I will probably re-engineer the earlier portion sometime, I didn't keep as consistent a theme as I would have preferred.

I'm going to convert over some of my old levels and get those posted here.

Working our way through this now...my wife is swearing like a sailor.

Edit-- and beaten. Pretty tricky timing but well done level.

Wish it was easier to play same screen coop rather then predownloading the levels wish they just kept rolling into the next one. Online multiplayer has been surprisingly fun in competitive play

I tried out the maker interface in SMM2 just now for the first time... and, unfortunately, already hit several frustrations with this game's capabilities.

- Continued frustration from SMM1: You STILL can't put a single coin into a standard brick block. (Dragging a coin onto a block puts the multi-hit 10 coins into it.) I want this all the time in levels to make a standard-looking brick that isn't breakable -- and Nintendo does this very thing frequently in the mainline Mario games -- but SMM1 didn't support it, and now SMM2 doesn't.

- Continued frustration from SMM1: There's no way to make nice-looking L-shaped pipes (like you see at the beginning of world 1-2 of the original Super Mario Bros. as Mario is heading underground, for example).

- Regression from SMM1: There now seems to be no way to make the same pipe serve as both the entrance to, and exit from, a sub-level area. I used this all the time in SMM1 to make nicely-flowing "bonus rooms" where you entered from one side of the room, and exited from the other side, and then come back out onto the main level where you started. (And again, Nintendo themselves frequently use this design in their own games.)

- Bonus frustration: While naming a level (as part of the process of saving it), on the on-screen keyboard, if you hit L to "cursor backwards" to correct something, and the on-screen keyboard brings up the suggested auto-complete words, there appears to be no way to "cursor forwards" back to the end of the name without selecting one of the auto-complete suggestions to replace the word the cursor is on, as L/R change function to scroll through the suggestions.

I didn't intend or expect my first post about SMM2 to be a gripe session, but I hit every one of these speed bumps in the space of about 20 minutes while creating my own first "World 1-1" level. With all of the crazy things you can make in SMM2, the inability to do the simple thing of putting a coin in a block is particularly galling, for me at least.

Rebuilt one of my MM1 courses: RSR-YWM-FHG Code no longer valid

Weird thing: did they actually take out the ability to give upgraded power-ups only if the player is Super Mario?
