World of Warships

Anyone trying the april fools space event? It's pretty fun, you get a bunch of free Tier 10 ships. To level the playing field no one gets modules or premium consumables.

I've been running the Paris (Republique) and just unlocked the Alldestroyer (FDG). At first I was considering a pure survival build with fire reduction and repair cooldown. But I eventually settled on an ALL secondary focused build with IFHE on top. The IFHE allows the Paris secondaries to pen 27mm and 32mm. 27mm is good enough for cruisers and 32mm will pen anything but turrets. On the Alldestroyer IFHE makes your guns pen 32mm and 48mm which means nothing is safe from you. The only thing that resist your secondaries is another Alldestroyer sinde FDGs get 50mm deck armour, but there aren't a lot of them in the queue yet.

Yes its fun. I like the "space water" much better then last year's which would hurt my eyes.

Decided to take a break from the game and uninstalled it. Had my fun with the space battles and I also passed the one major milestone I was working towards which was get my Alaska.

I'm not especially fond of how much grind is in the game now. The first thing they did was add campaigns with a big series of missions and a major reward at the end. I'm totally fine with those because you can handle them at your own speed and making progress in a mission keeps you moving forward even if you lose games. Even the campaigns with a time limit give you a whole month or more.

These days it's all about the daily missions and directives. In order to get the major reward you need to win at least 60 high scoring battles at a maximum of 6 per day. Alternately you can win 60 lesser scoring battles at a rate of 3 per day if you only accomplish the first step. Directives are even worse, some of the directives are nice and easy but most of them are just grindy as all hell. It's particularly bad if the directive forces you to play a specific type of ship, I main battleships almost exclusively with a bit of cruiser on the side. Grinding out 2 million credits or 10000 base XP on a destroyer or carrier is just impossible for me, I don't like playing them and because of that I'm also not very good at using them.

If you already play the game on a daily basis this is just free stuff to add to the pile. But for people like me who don't play every day (or don't even WANT to play every day) it just becomes a chore. It seems like every new patch will have it's own set of directives (and a new type of lootbox for the whales to buy into!) so I don't foresee things changing any time soon.

I really dislike how overpowering CVs are late game at high tier.

Torpedo Beats is crazy fun. Ships doing 100 knots, torpedoes going even faster, 15sec reload. It's also a great way to get elite commander XP, since they give you 19 point captains.

This thing is all of those russian bias memes personified. How much do you want to bet they'll still release it in an OP state and then nerf it after they get everyone's money. It worked for Belfast...

Yeah, there's no way that's going live as-is. I'm starting to believe it's a deliberate troll by WG on the Russian bias front, considering that overall the Russian ships are pretty mediocre in this game.

This explains a lot about why people felt differently about AA, and instances of defensive / offensive inconsistency.

I've been stealthily chasing [tamren's] KD/R on there for a while now. I'm not getting close, of course, but you make an excellent rabbit to chase.

I finally caught up to Tamren's 2.47 k/d rate. It only took three years.

Grats!

I've played a whole load of Legends lately on XBOX and I'm sweet and sour on it.

I love the strategic gameplay and have happily played many hours with lots of early unlocks. I have played mostly Japanese with a little bit of British. I love playing the level 5 and 6 destroyers. I am usually top half and very often top three. I think I've reached my peak with my first Kraken and c. 125000 damage on the level 6 Japanese destroyer.

The mixing of tiers and premium vehicles is less of big deal compared to WoT because you can always damage other ships.

The sour:
-Grinding is horrific for later boats.
-Three types of currency for commander- give me a break.
-Pay real money for boosters- not as bad as tanks but still horrible.
-Getting to the end of events is impossible for anyone with a job and the stuff you need to do is pure grind and sometimes tier and ship type based. Some dead ends later in events- 150000 damage in one round is never going to happen for me- maybe higher tier battleships can do this but with my destroyers, no way.
-Battleships are dull.

It's a free game and I'm not complaining. I'd pay for a full version of this game but there is no way I'm paying the ridiculous amounts of money to unlock stuff from the plethora on offer. My friend has played way more than me and spent about £60 on various packs but he is still grinding stuff out and it just feels exploitative.

You can absolutely do 150k damage in a Fubuki - you just need some straight-line-sailing BB saps on the other side, and a friendly team that can't shoot straight. The best way to beat the grind is just to play what you like, and don't worry about it. It'll come faster than you think.

I have almost 5k games played.

I think my tier VI damage record is with the Fubuki. At tier VII it's the Shiratsuyu.

At tier V it's the Kamikaze, but that's practically cheating.

Against my better judgment I started playing this game again over the past week (even though I get annoyed and depressed basically any time I visit its forum/reddit or hear news about the latest unbalanced high-tier premium or balancing debacle).

I've mostly been a battleship driver in the past but I got sick of trying to be a good boy and actually spearhead pushes only to look behind me and see the whole rest of my team running away like the Three Stooges at the end of every movie while I get focus-fired. So I decided to make a serious effort to learn proper cruiser handling instead. And to my surprise I find I'm sort of taking to it? Playing defensively, circling in the second line, never being the best target in any engagement (or running away if I am), opportunistically delivering support fire, punishing targets that can't afford to take time to shoot me back... it's, dare I say, fun and engaging! I had a 120k damage game in the Pensacola earlier tonight and I'm having consistently enjoyable matches in the Furutaka and I remember when both of these ships were considered among the very worst in the game. (Granted a lot about both of them has changed since then.) Once I completely put out of my mind the historical role of cruisers as scouts and started treating the middle of the map like it was radioactive for the first 10 minutes of a match I started living a lot longer, longer than I typically do in BB's actually. I'm bummed out I missed getting Exeter for free because she seems like she would suit me well and I am a big teaboo.

In a broader sense I've basically concluded that tiers 5-7 are the sweet spot of the game for me. The mentality at top tier (at least based on streams I watch) is way too boring and passive for me and there are too many paper ships. (I enjoy some "What ifs?" and I know they're necessary to fill out the tech trees but when half the lineup or more on both sides never launched and the ships that actually fought are power-crept to irrelevance, as a naval history buff I lose interest.)

I got some free premium time for coming back (I guess?) but I'm probably going to drop a few bucks on doubloons for permanent camouflages and stuff soon (even though I frankly feel scummy supporting a company like WG).

My son plays the battleships excellently. I love the cruisers. I enjoy the speed and firepower (and versatility) of the various cruisers. For me, they’re definitely my favorites.

Yeah the game has its ups and down and top tier can get frustrating but the mechanics can be real fun.

Check out this guy taking a Scharnhorst with 14k hit points into a secondary battle with a Graf Zeppelin and losing.

I turned my secondaries off because I couldn't believe what I was seeing and didn't want to interfere.

Yeah CVs are a bit ridiculous atm in regards to everything.

Mr Bismarck wrote:

Yeah, a secondary fight is not something you want to get into with some of the CVs. The Graf is one of them, because it's "secondaries" are actually cruiser-grade 150mm guns. The Hakuryu is another one - it essentially has a Harugumo strapped to each side of the ship, and if you spec for it those guns can reach out to 7.5km and fire every 2 seconds. I kill a careless dd or cruiser every few games.

CVs are surely a great way to dump karma. If you play well the opposition report you and if you don't your own team reports you.

Yesterday I was playing the Hosho and sank one DD with a torp and another who had hidden in smoke with rockets. After the rocket kill I actually said "Oh boy I'm getting reported for that" and... yep. Double report, post-game.

To be fair, if you're going full speed in a DD and you get hit by a tier IV CV who's dropping individual torps from biplanes you should lose your ability to report for 20 minutes.

I am thinking of getting into this as a four person co-op with my three brothers. Two are on macs, myself and another on PC. Based on folks' experience with Warships, is this a good idea? Or will we inevitably end up frustrated by the free-to-play nature of the game? Any other pieces of advice?

Thanks!

I have >5500 games and enjoy the game. The high tier mechanics/ships are what usually get people most irritated. With all the ship lines you could play hundreds and hundreds of games and never hit that stuff.

Co-op (which is against AI bots) will never be SUPER challenging. There are also weekly ops you can play that are more like short scenarios with goals.

Regular matches are against other players.

You can only have 3 to a group (or division in game) so one person may be a bit left out. Actually if y'all form a clan I think you can do more for an op that way? Not sure.

BEFORE YOU SIGN UP: get a recruiting link from an existing player, and use that for everyone to sign up. You'll get a bunch of free stuff and a decent mid-tier premium ship (Warspite is the current one I think).

The co-op game mode is not very good. It's designed for brand-new players, and the bots are quite dumb and predictable. It's a good place to learn the basics of the game but you will quickly tire of it.

The PvE Operations game mode is a lot more fun with friends, but there's a catch - you need mid-tier (t5, t6) ships. The fastest way to get there is to do some PvP random battles.

The free-to-play nature of the game shouldn't bother you - it's focused primarily around getting premium ships, which you don't necessarily care about much when you're starting out. If you want to spend a little money get some premium time, which will make it easier for you to progress in terms of money and resources. PLEASE NOTE, however, that premium time is real-time; if you only play on weekends, just buy the weekend pass, otherwise you're wasting it on days you don't play.

Don't start as the Americans - American ships generally require a higher skill level to play effectively, so your frustration level will be higher and your teammates will be annoyed. Don't rush up a tech tree to T9 or T10, spread things out a bit and explore the mid-tiers. Try all the different ship types to get a bit of a feel for them. The developers have a YouTube channel with a bunch of How it Works videos that will be very helpful after you've played a bit.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask here or PM me.

Also, great timing... because you can get 14 days of Premium for free right now.

I've played a ton of WoW on XBOX. It's a good game to play with others. If they die quickly it can be a long wait but you can watch the match play out.

The F2P, like everyone says, is not a thing at low level. The really grinds are for top level ships. Don't waste free XP on ships when you have installed all the upgrades. Use it when you have a new ship to reduce how long you have to play without any upgrades.

If I die I leave the game and play another ship so that keeps the action going!

Is it just me or are the airplane overpowered? Once I hit Tier IV, it felt like I spent more time trying to dodge planes than actual ship v ship combat.

CV's are broken with no real counterplay, have been for literally years, and WG won't do anything about it.

What a bummer. It severely damages an otherwise pretty good game.
