SWTOR: Catch-All

I think i logged in once with 5.4

5.5 just dropped and just going to post a video about the changes.

Biggest thing it seems are the nerf to the DoT Marauder and Sentinel classes

arise; Looking at this as a possibility to casually play through with my partner , would the two of us be able to coop the main story arch completely and get an enjoyable experience free to play or would the paywall barriers limit that too much?

Unless things have changed, the core story is about the one thing they give away completely free. My wife and I played through the game when we were dating, and it was about the perfect couple's game. It was subscription based back then, but the core experience of leveling up and doing story stuff should still be in there.

Yeah there are some restrictions like a credit cap and not being able to use high end gear, but you can either buy unlocks for those things or subscribe to get full access. After your first purchase you're moved to a 'preferred' tier that has higher access to things.

But beyond that I don't see anything that says you couldn't just do the core story. A few things I would note:

There are 4 starting worlds, 2 per good/light side. And then the force users start on one world and the non-force users start on another. For example, Republic Commando and Smuggler both start on the same planet together but the Jedi Consular and Jedi Knight are on another. After Level 8-10ish (about 2-3 hours worth of gameplay) you will meet up on the same planets and your quest chains will lead you along the same planetary paths.

Main story missions are instanced when you get closer to the end. An example of this is that my buddy and I would get to the end of a dungeon and it would have 4 hallways coming off of it. His took him off to the left and mine took me off to the right. So we would just go do his first and then go do mine second.

There are milestone fights that have to be done alone. These are usually boss fights but with the changes to the companion system they should be relatively easy as all companions can be spec'd as healers.

Personally i think paying the sub while playing through the story is worth it. The story lines are that good especially the later ones.

It will certainly do what it can to remind you of the things you could be getting if you sub'd.

It's important repeat: you get to tag along and see each other's stories. That way you don't have to play all the classes in order to see them. It's also nice that each person gets a bit of spotlight time in the otherwise shared story.

You may want to sub. The main story arcs (all 8) are all free, but there's so many quality of life improvements with a subscription and the leveling is so fast now that you can conceivably finish all 8 story arcs in a month or so and for $30 (2 subs I'm assuming) a month, you'll absolutely get your money's worth.

I'm actually subbed right now. Been playing through the DLC stuff and it feels so much like KOTOR, I love it.

Just started playing this again. I've been just circling back to the same MMO's for a while now and it was SWTOR's turn. Just a heads up, they merged servers. I had to rename many characters including my main, an Imp Agent, that I created at game launch. I was NOT pleased. I get attached to my characters in these games and having to rename them after all this time really pissed me off.

But, other than that it looks like they've added some really cool stuff to the game. I've got max level Marauder, Trooper, Imp Agent, Consular, and Bounty Hunter. So I'm trying to decide what I play through next: either Jedi Knight or Inquisitor.

This is like a 2 or 3 year old change

New expansion looks exciting though!

So what’s the news on the expansion? I was searching around for info but couldn’t find many details.

This guy is good with updates on the game.

Sooo....has anyone played SWTOR recently, particularly the new update? Just kind of curious.

Not i. It's on my list to do, but focused on other games. I hear good things about it though.

I last played about 4 - 5 months ago. Has there been big update recently?

I just re-downloaded this. Got a hankering for good storytelling from a multiplayer Bioware game. Anyone still around? Do we have a guild?

We all moved to another guild and i think they're still around.

Do you know the name of the guild by chance?

GAF

I run a guild on Shatele Shan - Thulsa Doom. Just a guild I started because could not find one - just friends, but really just me of late. I play pretty frequent - not hardcore or anything.

If interested...

Character name:
Rikka'a

Excited for the next XP!

I really really have tired to like SWTOR, but it just seems like I spend more time playing a single player game, than a MMORPG. Maybe I need to return. I guess I enjoy the MMO part.

Yea couple years ago they refactored everything to essentially be a single player game within a MMO hub.

From a storytelling perspective this is great and i still think SWTOR has the best star wars stories going these days. From a MMO perspective it's annoying and sad.

Anyone pick up the new expansion? Would love your thoughts. I’m still working my way through Knights of the Eternal Throne but hope to start it soon.

On the negative side, I’m seeing random flashpoint teams quitting if everyone’s not 75. Not sure if it’s due to gear but it kinda sucks.

Anybody still playing?

Kotaku article the other day got me interested. I tried way back in beta and liked it but never wanted to pay a monthly sub back then. Looked when it was free, but never jumped back in. Thinking it might be worth it for some single player story runs.

Free good enough? Should I buy some coins for preferred, bank slots or something?

What stories are most interesting? Yeah I like Jedi from both old KOTOR games but could do something else if it's really cool.

Just looking for quick tips and an "is it worth it?" affirmation. I think it could be fun.

I would say yes even if you don't make it to higher levels or end game.
I am not a huge fan of all the stuff locked away but there is enough there to mess around with.
Right now, the game can be played like an extended KotOR game. You can quest from story quest to story quest without need for completing any of the kill 10 rats side quests. That is well worth putting in the hours for a lot of the class stories. I would say all but I haven't gotten very far with more than 1-2 of them.

It would be certainly worth it to do the story of one of each archetype whether you go light, dark or a mix is up to you. Others with more experience with the stories can help you there. I've enjoyed the operative and jedi shadow (my highest) lines so far.

The great thing is that while you can only play 4(?) characters at a time, you don't have to delete characters to play new/other ones. You can activate and deactivate them on a whim.

Crap, I may go back to this. Something new and shiny came up as I was getting my shadow to the 50's.

If you're starting from scratch you can probably get away without paying the sub and sticking to F2P. Otherwise i think it's worth subbing for the time that is spent just to remove all the hindrances...

Like i said in my GotD post. Until this year with The Mandalorian and Fallen Order it's been the best source of Star Wars stories for years.

I jump in a couple times a year just to catch up on what they offer.

It's also been rumoured that they're going to be making movies from them.

I reinstalled this recently and have been digging it. What can I say? Between Mandalorian and a Rebels binge I've been in a SW mood. I played quite a bit at launch but have missed quite a few expansions. The "you paid us money once" account doesn't seem to have many significant restrictions on it. I'm definitely running into more difficulties from server merges and having to rename all my old characters than I am from F2P restrictions.

Though now that I think about it, I do remember resubscribing for two months a couple years ago. My wife and I tried to get back into the game but life got in the way. My main had more money than they let non-subscriber accounts keep, so I did roll the excess into buying a bunch of unlocks. And I can't remember which ones I got.

I started up a brand new Smuggler and I've had no difficulty there. The game likes to remind me that the XP will come faster if I subscribe, but it's coming fast enough as-is. And stuff scales to your level pretty much, so you don't really have to grind to keep up with the story bits you care about.

People like to hold this up as an awful example of free-to-play, but I'm not really seeing it. They give you a ton of story content for free. The stuff they charge for is the standard cosmetic stuff and the more MMO stuff like PvP and end-game raiding. The thing they do do is they ask you for money often, even though there isn't much core content that's actually locked away.

(and yes, my avatar is my old Sith Marauder character rendered in LEGO)
