NFL 2019: Draft

Carr should've thrown more picks

Fake news

It's an interesting tae on how we can make stats say what we want. Before this, Mahomes was heralded for his passer rating when throwing into tight coverage. Now, when we need to make a case for regression, he gets dinged for being successful when throwing into tight coverage.

Really, he's the perfect guy for pessimists. His numbers were so gaudy, it's absurd to think he can do better. And a mere Pro Bowl season in terms of success could still be a massive slide back for Mahomes. Fans get confused by stuff like this all the time. Mahomes success does not mean he is going to be play like this every season. It does indicate, he's probably going to be a solid started for a long time.

As long as he has Kelce and at least one legit #1 WR, he's going to put up good numbers. I think after a year in Reid's system, Watkins is going to have a seriously great season, with or without hill. With Hill is better, but I thin Watkins can be the #1 guy. I do think the drop-off for the other receivers is going to be problematic. DeMarcus Robinson needs to step up.

Cam Newton, pocket passer (and a pretty good one, actually).

I especially liked the counter-intuitive idea that max protect isn't always the best pass pro. Sometimes it's better just to let everyone go out for a pass.

Many defenses will respond to max protect by sending extra blitzers via green dog blitz assignments. Which is what Denver did against Carolina in the Super Bowl. I think I've seen it become more common since that game.

So sometimes when you max protect, you just add blitzers to the play, and not necessarily in matchups that are in your favor.

Anyone think this has any teeth, or is Belichick just being a jerk and using it to keep the Texans from hiring Caserio?

I think that's not even the most interesting Texans story today.

Fired Texans GM Brian Gaine accused of targeting African-Americans in firings.

But as for the tampering complaint, I expect it's a slap-on-the-wrist situation if anything.

Is there ever anything other than a slap on the wrist?

With tampering, sometimes. The Chiefs lost 3rd and 6th round draft picks for tampering in acquiring Jeremy Maclin. Tampering is probably the thing most likely to be punished with draft pick forfeiture.

But Nick Caserio is still a Patriot, so the Patriots have no loss to show. I think this was merely Belichick using the absolute letter of the law to try and stem the tide of the Patriots brain drain. It was a defensive move.

Between the Owner and this guy the Texans just seem like a wonderful organization that should enjoy great support from the KKK

Yeah, I have to laugh at the team's denial that the complaint and Gaine's firing are related.

"This claim by Mr. Pope was not a factor in the recent decision to relieve Brian Gaine from his job as general manager," Texans spokeswoman Sarah Huckab.. Amy Palcic said.

Right, you just happened to abruptly fire your GM after only 1 year a few days before this complaint goes public.

Something less serious to moan about: the Sporting News wrote an article ranking all 32 NFL team uniforms, and the rankings are awful.

The Panthers at 29?! Their black-on-black is the best look in the whole league. Yes, I will die on that hill.

That's a weird piece for picking on the Patriots for not changing up their unis in 20 years but tongue-bathing a bunch of other teams that haven't gone with a new look since the 1960s. /shrug

Edit:
Even worse than this uniform ranking is the SI piece on Kellen Winslow Jr., which describes him as a "compulsive masturbater and pornography enthusiast," not to mention convicted rapist. Link is potentially NSFW, and it's potentially triggering for lots of different reasons. What an awful human being.

You know, people may not go to the article to see the full insanity, so this is just a sample.

Later on in his career, after being sent to Tampa Bay via trade, Winslow acquired a life-sized silicone mold of a woman’s torso—complete with vagina and anus—to bring with him on road trips, according to one former assistant coach.

AGAIN, JUST A SAMPLE.

I would have just stopped at the .gif.

Dallas ranking number one in anything immediately invalidates that list.

Seattle at #2 is even more egrigous, and really shows what the list maker values: gaudy "updates" instead of something that lasts.

Seattle's jerseys don't rank #2, they are "number two".

Derek Carr fares better here. Drew Brees continues being a wizard, as he is, but the shocking thing is Kirk Cousins coming in 2nd.

Actually, it's not surprising to me. Cousins had a great year until he was getting pressured too much. Then he fell back into his Gabbert-esque ways.

Speaking of Gabbert, he's far and away the worst QB of all time according to this stat ... as he usually is at Football Outsiders. (The caveat being FO's database only goes back to 1981 or whenever.)

Non-fake news.

And Blake Bortles is 4th worst. Eli Manning is 5th worst, but there's a significant jump in the number between Manning and Bortles, putting Bortles and the rest of the Bottom 4 in a tier of their own.

Josh McCown retires. Genuinely think someone with as limited of talent as Josh McCown making it 17 years is one of the most amazing careers we've seen in the NFL.

It seems unlikely that anyone will catch Blaine Gabbert to be the worst quarterback in modern NFL history, but Blake Bortles definitely has a lot on his side for the chase: he's real bad, he's just off his rookie deal, and he's still tall enough to convince dumb teams that he could be a good quarterback. On the downside, he did sign with the Rams, and they actually have a good offensive philosophy.

Oof.

Not sure if you all heard, but Gurley's trainer confirmed there's an arthritic "component" to his knee issues. Gurley has shed a little weight and has been focusing on agility.

I think it's pretty obvious Gurley's early season workload will be reduced so that he'll be in better shape come the playoffs. Or as the trainer said Gurley's doing the things "that's going to give him a better chance to be healthy Weeks 14 through 17 when they really count."

Gurley's knee is perfect this is all fake news

*ahem*

Todd Gurley available for trade in Dynasty league!

No kidding, not many players can say they were in the league as a player for 10 let along 17. It's interesting since some of the QB's that never really had a stellar career as a starter but were serviceable backups, end up being sponges and moving into a coaching career, analyst etc.

I wish I could take that tweet and send it back in time to draft day 2015. Given how much of Winston's draft evaluation circled around the 18 INTs he threw in his final year in college, I think we would just laugh and shake our heads.

He's been told to stop a lot of things since 2015.

Bengals lose 1st round pick LT Jonah Williams for the year.

Whelp, time to pack up and go home, Bengals fans.

Boy does that suck. I was looking forward to seeing how he fared, given that I thought he was the best tackle in the draft class.
