Google Android catch-all

Multi account containers on desktop is dope.

I watched a video for the addon and it blew my mind. What does the "desktop" have to do with it though?

That's where I use it for work

Any adblocking apps that work well for Android? I am on a Galaxy S10 and the garbage ads are driving me bonkers.

I use the Brave browser, which is built on Chromium. It has built in ad blocking that is per site opt out. Seems to work pretty well for me.

Brave is alright too, but I really want to implore people to not let web browsers become a Chrome (and derivatives) monoculture. Firefox's entire mission is being a browser that protects the user instead of monetizing the user.

We don't want to find out how Google might leverage Chrome (and perhaps undermine those more open derivatives) if the alternatives atrophy and fall by the wayside. We all lived through one browser monoculture, and it was a sh*tty time.

I know not everyone will listen to me, and that's fine, but I say it to everyone I can:

USE.

FIREFOX.

I switched back to Firefox on the desktop. It is simply faster. Chrome is noticeably slower than either Firefox or Edge (!!).

I use Chrome on desktop only for sites I log in to. Any time I want to search I switch to FF.

Ah, OK. I was picturing some setup where you had multiple firefox shortucts, on windows desktop, that each launched into their own container.

I actually just switched to Firefox after not being to keen on the changes to Chrome, which will likely come to Chromium browsers like Opera.

When did this thing get so damned good? I'd not used it in years, but wow is it awesome now. The mobile version is great too, and being able to send tabs back and forth to each is a GODSEND.

Yeah I tried mobile Firefox back in 2010 on my first Droid. It sucked and chrome was way better. Never have tried again but you guys are making a case.

This is officially the back of the Pixel 4

Is is so unorthodox but pretty savage. So many leakers are trying to make money off of fake designs and Google just shut them all down.

I want to know if they got rid of the notch. I have the Pixel 2XL and I was disappointed when Google added it to the 3.

Googles official image makes this leaked design hold more weight

3a with no notch.

Google likes those giant forehead/chin bezels.

Anything is better then an odd shaped display. If they want to remove the speaker and camera from the front of the phone I would be ok with that. Otherwise, a bezel is fine by me.

I would like them if they were symmetrical.

This is way better than the Pixel 3, which was truly the worst of both worlds with both a notch AND a big lower bezel. I wouldn't mind using the Pixel 4 looking like that.

I spent about a half hour cleaning my OG Pixel XL charging port with a toothpick yesterday and it's now back to an adequate (if not quite pleasurable) tightness except with a couple of cables around the house which I think are just worn out themselves, so I have no plans to retire it soon.

Do you mean the 3 xl?

I'm still on my OG Pixel XL.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna ride with this phone till the battery just won't get me through a day anymore.

I guess. I forgot they didn't look the same, which kind of makes the design decisions made on the 3 XL more bizarre.

Lately my Pixel XL keeps choosing not to use known wifi networks for no particular reason? I will pick up my phone at home and see it's not connected, and when I go into my wifi settings the wifi is on but my home network says "disabled." If I manually tell it to connect, it works... for a while. Sometimes it will switch back to "disabled" while I'm still watching it.

Googling this problem only turns up forum threads from the Marshmallow era where there was some bug with battery optimization turning off wifi while the phone was asleep. The settings changes these threads recommend are no longer applicable, and the wifi isn't actually turning off, it's just arbitrarily disabling the network.

Anybody experience anything like this?

Hell no. Google Fi.

My OG Pixel XL's battery life has suddenly gone from good for a day and a half of normal use to needing to be charged whenever I'm not holding it to keep it going.

Is there a good replacement out there for it that isn't $700 or whatever and runs stock Android? The phone market is a mess as far as I can tell.

Headphone jack 100% required. Priorities after that are battery life and storage space.

I want like 128gb but don't want to pay $1000 for it.

Pixel 3A XL is exactly what you want.

Only 64gb though? I like having all my music stored locally on the phone

What I am hearing is you want to buy a $1000 phone but pay much less.

Thin_J wrote:

This is why I'm on Samsung and not a Pixel. No SD = no buy.

With Nova Launcher, I don't find myself missing vanilla all that much. Settings app sucks but not nearly as much as no SD.

Sorry for thinking maybe phones might have progressed past the point of charging $300 more for like $5 worth of storage. Super helpful though, thanks.

I didn't have a great experience with Nova Launcher when I tried to use it to tame all the extra BS Motorola put on my last not-plain-android phone. It would just kind of stop working for no reason all the sudden, and I ended up doing an uninstall-reinstall reboot dance to make it work again, and then it might go 6 months or it might go two weeks before I had to do it again.

Hence some hesitance to deal with Samsung or Motorola or whoever's stupid software layer they insist on shoving on top of android.

I'm not sure how long ago that was, but this phone and my last are/were Samsung with Nova launcher, with no issues. Maybe they've ironed out the bugs?

The stock Samsung interface got much better with Pie. Much cleaner than it used to be. Maybe stop by a phone shop to play with an S10e and see what you think.

3 phones? 4 phones?

sh*t I don't know. I hate phones so much.

The Pixel XL is the first smart phone I've ever had that didn't find some way to drive me insane for the entire time I used it. It had a couple little quirks at times but they'd get fixed and go away and then everything was just... fine. For almost 3 years. It just worked. It did all the things I wanted it to do and did them well.

And now there just isn't an equivalent. Because phones are bullsh*t.
