Collection of Mana: $40

Speaking of the wishlist, this is heading right to the top. I'm sure they won't hold up but Mystic Quest was my first JRPG, Secret of Mana is an all time favorite and I have been waiting to play Seiken Densetsu 3 on a console for about 20 years.

I picked up both of those collections when I got home. They seem pretty great, if not as fully featured as the Mega Man Collections and whatnot.

Seiken Densetsu 3 gets its first English release EVER on the same day it gets a 3D remake!

What a weird E3, but this makes me very happy. It's a much better game than Seiken 2/Secret of Mana that we got on the SNES.

Finished Katana Zero a few nights ago, it was pretty good. Like a side scrolling Hotline Miami.

I'm forcing myself to play through the games in order, not because they're bad (obviously they aren't), but because it has been an incredibly long time since I played Adventure, and a couple of years since I played SoM.

But man I wanna be playing 3.

Just to be sure, Mystic Quest wasn’t a Mana game and isn’t part of this collection.

Seiken Densetsu/Final Fantasy Adventure was released in Europe as Mystic Quest. Not to be confused with Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest for the SNES.

Oh wow, that’s confusing. Thanks for the info and apologies for being wrong!

Buying Into the Breach now...

Mana and Contra collections joining the Castlevania one on my wish list.

3 holds up surprisingly well.

Is it better than Crypt of the Necrodancer? Different enough to be... different?
I loved absolutely every single thing about that game except for the part where you play it.

I picked it up last night hoping that it'd release at midnight EST (6pm out here), but sadly it did not. It's loaded, though, and I'm looking forward to diving in tonight.

Polygon says it's the best Zelda spinoff game ever (which they realize isnt saying much). Sounds like its far more than a reskin. Instead it sounds like a Zelda 2d game with Necrodancer mechanics.

For $25 they priced it just out of insta-buy for me. $20 might have got me without looking further than that Polygon review.

I haven't played Necrodancer, so I was a little worried. I don't know how different it is, but it definitely has the move on the beat thing going. It's a little tough at first, but I'm getting heart pieces and buying hearts with diamonds which are permanent, so things are getting more manageable. I'm not great at it, so I may end up grinding out a bunch of diamonds (assuming you can redo a section of enemies for a diamond).

It all really feels like a Zelda game too with all the sounds, music, and items, which is the the nice thing. It doesn't feel like a game that just got a reskin. I'm excited to play some more later this afternoon.

I got to play Cadence of Hyrule for about 45 minutes over lunchtime today. It was a highly-anticipated day-1 buy for me since Crypt of the Necrodancer was my GOTY a couple of years ago and I still play it reasonably often.

Some early quick impressions:

- You start playing as Cadence (the main character from Necrodancer) through a brief tutorial area, then choose one or the other of Link or Zelda to play as. I went with Zelda for the novelty of having her be playable. In addition to a weapon, she starts with her "Nayru's Love" move -- the neutral-special move from Smash Bros where she gets briefly encased in a blue diamond which reflects projectiles -- which is cool.

- The music is great! From the same composer as Necrodancer's fantastic soundtrack. The first main outdoor theme seems to be a long track which is a dance-beat medley of the original Zelda overworld theme, the SNES overworld theme, and a track that I remember from Wind Waker, among others. I'm going to want to get that on my computer at some point for at-work listening.

- The game isn't just Necrodancer with a Zelda reskin -- it's a whole new game. There's an explorable overworld split into "screens" similar to the original NES Zelda.

- I was concerned that traversing the overworld while having to step only on the beat would be slow and get tedious; however, they solve that problem by allowing you to ignore the beat and move as fast as you want when there are no on-screen enemies.

- Like Necrodancer, the game has roguelike attributes, where you lose most of your gear on death, but can unlock permanent upgrades.

- There is great understanding of and homages to past Zelda games here. The green and blue slime enemies from Necrodancer return here, but now they're essentially the Zol & Gel enemies from the original NES Zelda -- where the big slime splits into two smaller ones upon getting hit.

- I reached (and was killed by) a boss enemy at the end of my play time. Without spoiling anything, the bosses seem to be designed around same the kinds of clever music-related puns as the ones in Necrodancer, mashed up with Zelda classic bosses.

I give this game an early recommendation for anyone for whom a classic-style 2D Zelda game where you move and attack to a dance beat sounds like fun!

The Treehouse presentation today basically sold me on the game, even though I never played Necrodancer. The soundtrack and aesthetic is enough for me, but I like what they showed of the Zelda-inspired mechanics as well. It looks like a joy to play.

The Wii U broke. Have replaced with a Switch for the boy and I. He's been ploughing through Odyssey, whilst I've been enjoying Steamworld Quest.

I thought it looked fantastic, but the constantly pulsating, throbbing world gave me a huge headache. I don't think I could play the game at all because of that.

Hyrule Warriors hasn't even been out a year on Switch. I'm shocked if it's the best spin-off on the system even, much less ever. But ok

Mario + Rabbids has just dropped through the letterbox, pre-owned copy for a tenner had to be done.

Other games considering for the pile...

Slay the Spire - enjoyed on Steam, but don't tend to play games on the Mac - Worth the double dip?

Civ VI - Not played a Civ game in decades, a good one to drop back in on Switch?

My Time at Portia - I'm a sucker for Harvest Moon, DQ builder, Animal Crossing style games - With that in mind recommended?

I've picked up Wargroove already and have Darkest Dungeon and Stardew Valley re-downloaded from purchase about 18 months ago when had a Switch for about a fortnight.

Am tempted by Monster Hunter Generations as it's 50% off at the mo.

I wasn't expecting to pick one up, so haven't really kept up with what's going on with the console at all - Any other recommendations?

Run screaming from this game, at least on the Switch. Absolutely abysmal performance that really detracts from what is otherwise a fairly pleasant game. I'd wait for patches, or just get it on PC.

Cheers for the warning, I'll leave it for now. I don't have Windows PC, so was hoping Switch an option.

So I just bought Hyrule Warriors and Crypt of the Necrodancer on sale. Did I do it right?

Fuse them like you do in Pokemon. Easy!

Steamworld Dig 2 for sure. And Skyrim if you have an itch to play that again, it really is a good port and nice to have portable.

So apparently with Cadence of Hyrule you can switch from a rhythm game to a sort of turn based roguelike.

https://www.polygon.com/2019/6/14/18...

Changing the setting shifts the game into letting you control the 'beat' meaning when you move or act, the game processes a 'turn' rather that making the turns happen on the beat.

That could be a far more relaxed and fun way to play for some people (me)
