US Soccer Catch-All

Mehhhhhh.

One thing to lose to Jamaica, another to be fairly handily outplayed by them.

That said, issa friendly.

Better than losing to T&T in a do-or-die game...

Too soon!

Still waiting for Josh Sargent to break out and convert those chances...

Big headline today is that he's not in the Gold Cup squad. I assume that was planned. He, Pulisic, and Adams are the three young players I feel the most confident about.

I'm disappointed but not surprised. He's promising but has a long way to go.

That's funny right there, I don't care who you are.

Good news is women start tomorrow so we'll see some wins

Uff. I just watched the "high" lights of the Venezuela match, if that's what you'd call them. That first goal was awful on so many levels.

I just noticed that they start the Gold Cup against Guyana here in St. Paul next week. Tickets are running under $100 on Stub Hub, after fees. I'm tempted, but after watching those highlights, I'm not sure I'm tempted enough.

I'll bet they drop as the game gets closer.

I was wondering about that. There appear to be a lot of tickets available. I'm not that interested in paying $100 to see the match, but if it got down to the $70-75 range I might bite. I'll keep an eye on them, maybe make a decision at the last minute.

Tyler Adams is out from the Gold Cup squad.

This tournament could go badly for the USMNT.

Well, as Fedaykin98 predicted, ticket prices to the US vs Guyana have dropped considerably. Looking like my son and I will be going. I hope to buy tickets tonight.

Nice! Btw the American Outlaws usually have a great tailgate party and then march to the game singing. I've done that twice and had a great time. Also, they have a Night Before party at a local bar.

Woot! We might check that out, thanks!

I Just got two tickets now. They were running about $200 for two decent seats last week. We got a pair now, row 9, right behind one of the goals, for $110. I was hoping to a decent pair of tickets for about $150, so I'm happy with the purchase.

It's a doubleheader, so our plan will be to arrive in time to catch the second half of the Panama vs. Trinidad & Tobago match.

Anyone have any personnel thoughts? I feel like Carli Lloyd made a pretty good case for starting. I also thought Jessica McDonald was pretty good; her long throws really stood out. Christen Press provided good service and would have had more to show for it but for the great performance by Endler, that fantastic Chilean keeper.

I hate to say it, but Morgan Brian looked bad all game. Her first touch seemed to be consistently poor, and at times that seemed to be because she was momentarily switched off and not expecting to be playing the ball.

I also thought Megan Rapinoe was off in the first game. I noticed her overhitting a bunch of balls, where usually she provides the most consistent service on the team.

Oh, I also continue to enjoy Mallory Pugh every time. She and Rose Lavelle are huge bright spots for the future. It was great to see them both score their first World Cup goals versus Thailand. Both have impressed me basically since they first joined them team.

Lloyd has mastered be in the right spot at right time and off the bench I think serves her best.

Brian though had some very good passes and services with touch, but did have a heavy first touch. Looked better than she has in last runs with team.

Press looked better than Rapinoe did but Press is also good coming in as a sub with fresh legs and running at a tired defense.

Too many options which isn't a bad thing.

They are both on my local women's soccer league team (Washington Spirit). I plan to check that out after the tournament.

Eh, I'll take it. Yes, it's Guyana, but I'll take it.

Good times had at the match tonight! And first time to Allianz Field, thumbs up for the new soccer venue. You're right on top of the play.

LOLOL

Where was this USMNT when we were trying to go to Russia?!?!?

Biggest win since 2017 though.

Amen. To be fair to the boys, that was a CONCACAF away game at a super sh*tty field with no replay not goal-line technology. This was a home game under ideal circumstances. Not sure that accounts for the, what, seven goal swing, though.

Hopefully that day against T&T will be the lowest in US Soccer history. I would hate imagine worse.

Another sluggish start, huh?

9 from 3. Fine by me.

I was tempted to post a laundry list of impressions after my son and I watched the Guyana game live last week, but the short end of it was that neither of us was impressed by the USMNT performance. We won 4-0 yes, but we won because we were larger, stronger, and faster than Guyana, and several of the Guyana players (including their keeper) were really weak. Soccer-wise, we looked fairly lost in this system. We couldn't move the ball on the ground well at all. We set up goals with long balls over the top, or through passes that caught defenders napping. My son and I didn't think that was going to work against good teams where the size, speed, awareness, and strength are more equal.

I also have questions about our roster. If Bradley and Altidore are not going to be at the next World Cup, and we're trying to play a complicated system that will take time for everyone to get on board, why not bring in the closest representation to what we think the 2022 team will be and leave the older players out? Bring on someone like Weah right now, for example. Take our lumps early so we're better in 2022.

I haven't followed the team that closely, and maybe everything will work out fine, and teams can certainly change and learn quickly, but I'm not filled with confidence that we're going in the right direction.

Did the USSF pay someone so that Mexico & CR would play in the QFs, while we face Curacao? I know the bracket was set up so that we wouldn't see either Mexico or CR before the final, but still.

Here's the US goal, in case anyone didn't see it:

More worried about Canada or Haiti than Costa Rica this year. Man, that's a weird statement.

US v FRA today during the workday. Maybe I can find time for a listen in at lunch. How are others catching the game?
