E3 2019: Bethesda Conference [June 9th, 8:30PM EST]

I'm basically only here for DOOM Eternal's release date. That, and to see if Todd Howard can outdo Randy Pitchford's denial of Aliens: Colonial Marines being a bad game, only in regards to Fallout 76 being a major disaster.

I found lots of fun in Fallout 76 - Its a decent game now, but its just not Skyrim of course.

I cant believe we won´t get any Starfield OR Elder Scrolls 6 news this E3. I know I should be happy they are talking their time, but man - I am beginning to doubt they will ever make a game with the scope of Skyrim again.

Bethesda has nothing to apologize for with FO76.

Okay, maybe the tote bags. The game is fine.

Now.

The game wasn't close to fine at launch.

Todd Howard says otherwise...

"That was a very difficult, difficult development on that game to get it where it was... A lot of those difficulties ended up on the screen. We knew, hey look, this is not the type of game that people are used to from us and we're going to get some criticism on it. A lot of that -- very well-deserved criticism."

I mostly played it at launch, so my impressions are based on that. It was good.

Howard was under pressure to apologize—because, hey, fans are whiney and entitled babies—but he didn't need to and, in my opinion, shouldn't have.

Howard spouted some complete & utter rubbish in the lead up to Fallout 76, which is one of the worst looking AAA games I've seen in a long time. It's effectively made me not give a sh*t about Starfield or Elder Scrolls 6 until I see some significant progress from Bethesda Game Studios.

Their other Dev studios like Arkane & Id software are way more talented imo. Would love something new from the former then a September release for Doom Eternal would be lovely.

I think this is shaping up to be one of the tamer press conferences unless they pull out some surprise game announcements.

Why would Howard apologize for creating the joke that keeps on giving? From the critic who made a three hour video of just bugs, to those who just lay out events, to the sad guy on my friends list insisting he weren't taken and all the merch he bought was actually worth it, to the micro-transaction pricing that, whoops, turns out to be fraud in many countries, 76 has been the source of much hilarity.

Battlespire, now that was a crappy launch.

Fwiw, he also made an hour long video about the game itself in which he praised many things.

As did I, before I stopped playing for a couple mo this, and the game is in much better shape now. Some of that is the GaaS stuff in refining how players play in the world, but the bugs and connection issues were uber prevalent early on.

Did the game deserve the toxic reputation it has? Hardly. It's a continuation of the sh*tting on Bethesda in general. Some of that is earned, obv, but only some.

FO76 was probably my first pre-purchase in a long long long time. And with much reservation. I never liked pre-orders. It kind of reinforced my feelings about pre-ordering. It was not a good launch. It was also PR nightmare. Was it a good launch? No. Is it a good game? It's meh. I await a full blown modder attack and some form of private servers. It's upcoming Nuclear Winter is going to be about a battle royal mode most likely which will make me wait for something else.

Doom Eternal isn't my cup of tea, though I know it and Rage 2 are going to get mentions this year. And I hope they don't have that band open up for the show again. These little presentation fillers send my attention elsewhere. Maybe that will get a prod from Devolver. =)

I hope for some form of news on Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield. Not looking forward to the cynicism that will follow afterwards because of FO76 surrounding any news (or lack thereof) of these titles.

Maybe FO76 is fine, but it seems like they have walked from PR disaster to PR disaster with it - and are still doing so.
It makes little sense to apologize though. That is not going to solve anything. If you want to salvage a messy game, you keep working on it.

I'm somewhat interested in what Bethesda might show in any case. I kinda doubt there will be much, it just seems 'too soon' for their next big releases (Starfield/ES6/Arkanes next games).
But they have published some great games in recent years with Dishonored 2 and Prey, and while I dont really like shooters, I can't deny that Doom and Wolfenstein 2 was interesting/wild rides too.

FO76 what is the first game I’ve purchased on steam and ever got a refund for. Is it worth going back to you now?

FO76 wasn't released on Steam; just on the Bethesda store. (Though it is supposedly coming to Steam later this year.) A different Fallout maybe?

Guess they are starting at the bottom with FO76 and TES Blades. Now you too can pay to open lootboxes for free on Switch. Wohoo.

Human NPCs in FO76 The game instantly became better. That was such a crazy decision.

I mean good on them for listening with the Human NPC's... but no one, I mean no one...asked for a Battle Royal mode in FO76.

Bethesda bosses surely did.

LOL

Sure would have been nice to have seen game play from Ghost Wire. Looking for something to fill my Silent Hill vacant lot.

Different folks different strokes. But that game was a glitchy mess and filled with unnecessarily expensive microtransactions. I agree that many vocal gamers are whiney these days. But I also believe that developers need to actually release a finished, mostly bug free product. And in my experience, it just wasnt. So I believe the vocal babies actually had grounds this time.

Considering the vocal babies were vocal baby-tising long before the game released, almost from the moment it was announced, I’m not sure this argument is applicable.

At least Wolfenstein: Young Blood seems nice.
I thought the gameplay of the previous game was bad, but a fun and crazy ride. Seems like they are doubling down on all of it.

July 26.

New Arkane game also seems potentially interesting. Deathloop.

Of course. Let me rephrase that. The vocal babies who actually purchased and played the game.

I mean, if you actually enjoyed Fallout 76 more power to you, and that's all I'm gonna say on that matter.

Ghostwire and DOOM Eternal were the highlight of the presentation. I'm afraid of Shinji Mikami continuing his obsession with invisible enemies in Ghostwire. I'm sad that I have to wait as long as November to play DOOM Eternal.

I need real gameplay for Deathdrop before I'm excited. Also, when did Arkane open a second studio? Their original studio is in Texas, isn't it?

Sorry, did someone call me?

Good grief, I can't imagine anything worse than only getting the games we ask for.

I've said before, I don't think Bethesda should do a press conference. Especially when they have to pad it out to try to sound enthusiastic about mobile games.

This should've been just a dump of trailers.

those mobile games make them a lot of money...

I'm in agreement that Bethesda maybe shouldn't do a press conference because their portfolio is one studio short of avoiding having a fairly empty show like this season.
