Spoiler:

Lightning ends up on Earth, in Paris?

Haven’t played Lightning Returns, but I read about that, and boy did it seem weird. Kind of killed my desire to even try the game, TBH (that, and I haven’t even finished XIII).

I'm not going to look up to see whether or not that spoiler is true, but god I hope it is. That would be hilarious.

Oooo! That is so weird and rad! Will have to YouTube. Never beat the final boss and gave up.

All this talk about LR makes me want to move it up my pile list and also complete all that I'm missing in FFXIII-2.

Was all this a call back to Lightning's time as, I believe, a Louis Vuitton model?

Has anyone here ever done the Final Fantasy V Four-Job Fiesta?

I’ve been thinking about trying this, but of course am in the middle of a few other long games.

I have a friend that does it each year. It sounds like an interesting concept and just goes to show how deep you can get with the job mechanics in that game. I'd be curious to try it at some point, though I imagine I'd be awful at it. I've never been that great at uncovering the most munchkin of possibilities in the class-customization games.

Might have to look into this--I have never played Final Fantasy V.

Having the Four-Job Fiesta made me think that FFV might be a good candidate for our JRPG Club in July! I'm not sure if it'll get enough support as compared to other, longer games though.

If you are playing FFV for the first time, I definitely would not recommend starting with the Fiesta. I'd say learn the game systems first. It's plenty hard even without the extra self-imposed challenge.

I’ve got about twenty hours into FFXII on Switch and not quite feeling it. I’m headed to Mt. Bur-Omisaice or some such. Does the game change much going forward? The characters and plot are feeling kinda stiff and the job system doesn’t feel as rewarding and interactive as I imagined.

I could certainly go for an FFV replay.

At twenty hours, I think you should already have seen what the gameplay has to offer. If it doesn't click, it's fine to just walk away.

You may want to check out the hunts and clan stuff as an additional task. Some of the battles are fun and you have to use a bit more strategy with buffs rebuffs and items.

My son is playing his first ever FF game. FF9 on the switch and he loves it so far.

I thought FF7 was fine. (Played it on my vita). Certainly not the best game ever but not the worst either. It was a lot of fun to play with an interesting story but was marred by certain things. For example the Disc was hyped up for me by other people, "just wait till you get to the Disc". I got there and discovered a bunch of mini games that were tedious to play and seemed pretty pointless. That and the usual host of unintuitive elements that are in most FF games. Like the big gun that kept making my party run out of a shop. " You'll find out what that's for later" people said. Well I never did. All that aside it was an enjoyable game to play but I couldn't see myself playing it again.

Now if the next FF has the fighting mechanics of 15 and the cohesive story of some of the earlier games I'm going to be very happy.

It's like you're not even reading your Prima Official Final Fantasy Strategy Guide you obviously purchased with the game.

I shook my vita for ages but no guide fell out.

I wrapped up Lightning Returns.

Like I stated before, it sure is goofy. But eventually the shine on that wore off, and I really kind of overtly disliked it by the end. The side quests (the meat of the game) were almost universally uninteresting, or hampered by terrible voice acting. The combat never approached the satisfying oomph of FF XIII or XIII-2. While the concepts were kept, it was bogged down in a mushy realtime system and a dry, unsatisfying ability fusion system. Battles took too long, and the lack of exp and leveling killed any real desire to explore the combat further.

As far the the XIII/Fabula Nova Chrystalis story goes, this game certainly did its best to wrap it up. All the hanging plot threads from the first two games were resolved. It even explained why Lightning is so stoic throughout the series. "We hope in the face of despair" is the running theme of this world, and the plot finally broke out of the depressing rut it had been in since the beginning. Despite the fact this was just how the story was supposed to go, this bleak tone is probably going to be my strongest memory of this series.

All of humanity, until Lightning Returns' final cutscene, suffers at the whim of cosmic gods. It's much more overt than previous Final Fantasy games, where maybe you learn at the end that God is behind all suffering all along. In this series, everyone already knows this, and just tries to get along. Lightning and friends try to fight against fate and gods, but they're written so poorly and simplistically that you can't really connect with them. They're mostly inscrutable mythic heroes who spend three games and a couple hundred hours smashing their heads against a wall before finally breaking through. There was a definite feeling of catharsis at the end, but it was faint. Vanille and Fang are notable exceptions. Those women have been through some serious sh*t, and seeing them reunited at the end was nice.

I'm glad to leave this world behind. Structurally and mechanically, XIII-2 is the most enjoyable of the three, but I can't see myself ever playing these games again.

It sure is pretty though.

Excellent, thanks for sharing! I primarily use Spotify to make playlists for tabletop RPGs, and there are some gems in there.

About two weeks ago I discovered the Know One Can Know About This podcast, which is a really funny and we'll edited audio play through of two guys playing every final fantasy game. They are currently playing FF7 (4th game they've played) and I'd highly recommend listening the guys have a great chemistry and I have often laughed out loud listening. It starts out really strong and even episode 1 season 1 is great but it only gets better as the seasons continue. Anyone else ever given it a try?

I've managed to catch up to the current episodes and was wondering if anyone knows if there are similar things out there? I wouldn't have guessed an audio let's play would work but this is edited so well and hits the ground running from the 1st episode I've got to imagine they are building on an established formula or maybe I'm wrong.

Can I get a link?

edit* Thanks!

Sounds interesting. Going to check it out.

Let me know what you think, I was hooked right away

We have a date!

Yeah right! I'll believe that this has a date three weeks after I've played it.

It's the date for the release date, if FFXV is any indication.

Water off a duck's back, folks. All of your predictive and probably highly accurate statements can't hit me today. Tomorrow, absolutely, but not today!

Much as I enjoyed FF7 I can't imagine wanting to play it a second time.

Cool, we get to go back to play the dead guy again

I couldn't help it, I'm hyped about FF7 remake, its pretty much what my brain imagined it was, back when I first played it.

I'm right there with you!

Also happy to finally see the FFVIII remaster coming to consoles. Getting my wallet ready for this year's end and the first couple of Quarters from next.

Hooboy!

Schreier has thoughts on the demo: https://kotaku.com/final-fantasy-vii...

The combat looks decent to me, and moving around the arena looks way more responsive than it was in Lightning Returns. The slow motion pause while choosing abilities looks like it'll keep things from feeling too hectic.

There's a lot of bombast and banter in that video, but I'm cautiously optimistic about the combat in general.

Oh, man. I just realized that it's gonna make the ultimate fate of AVALANCHE that much worse if the entire thing is set in Midgar.
