Dauntless Catch-All

I've dipped my toes into the hunting this week.

I'm pretty sure I'm vlox_km on epic too.

I started playing this last night. It's fun so far. Seems like less depth and faster pace than Monster Hunter, which probably suits my playing habits these days. I've always enjoyed the idea of Monster Hunter more than actually playing it mostly due to the time and dedication required. I don't have much idea about what I'm doing, but I'm enjoying it at least. No cats companions though - that's a real shame.

Anyone playing on PSN? Downloaded this but don't have a go-to gaming crew to play with on the Playstation.

It's completely cross-play, so you can play with anyone at all regardless of which platform you or they are on.

Excellent. I'll fire it up and join a crew.

Who wants to create the GWJ guild?

I'd be happy to do it but I don't know if you can delegate invite power to multiple people because I don't want to hold up guild management if I can't log on for some days.

Screw it, I'll start the guild this evening.

Post your Epic log in if you want an invite (don't worry about what platform, as others have mentioned it's perfectly seamless cross play)

I will take a guild invite. Epic name below.

I made one last week. It's GamersWithJobs - GWJ.
Friend me up as Amoebism and I'll toss you a guild invite. This goes for everyone!

Ah ok then (you guys don't want me managing the guild anyway).

Epic name: Trashidawa

Thanks Amoebic!

Sent you a friend request Amoebic (to Amoebism), I've felt like playing a bit this evening so maybe I will be playing some more for a bit.

Friend request sent too! Username same as here. Time's very limited though, so no guarantees on whether I'll be around much.

They *seem* to have fixed the super long server queues. Both last night and today got in with zero queue

I made trashidawa a guild officer, so hopefully that means he can send out guild invites as well. Have yet to look into what the guild level perks may be!

I'll give it a shot today. Thanks again Amoebic!

To anyone in the guild, feel free to send an invite to a hunt without prompting when I'm in game. I'm playing with a controller with no quick access to a keyboard so I might not reply to guild chat promptly

Some information here featuring the perks of guild involvement in Dauntless.

As of yet, it doesn't seem to be possible for officers to invite to guild, so not sure what that means, exactly, you can do. We'll see if they answer to twitter.

I played a surprising amount of this over the weekend. I feel engaged by it but am not sure if I like it, if that makes sense. I feel the pull to check off all the check boxes, but am still not sure whether I'm enjoying the combat. Still experimenting with weapons to find what I like.

I like the look and feel of the repeaters, except it seems like I'm doing very little damage with them, and in two hunts with them, my team failed on one and the other we completed but I was given a D grade. Clearly I'm missing something.

vypre001 for guild invite please.

Hi vypre! Won't be home until 7pm PST, but maybe they changed it so officer's can invite? Otherwise I got you tonight.

Aah, I tried to send you a friend request last night and it failed. One of your earlier posts said your Epic username was Amoebsim instead of Amoebism. I didn’t look at your signature.

I feel much the same. The combat/weapons are much simpler than Monster Hunter. There are some interesting things behind the masteries, like mods, but getting to some may not be worth the grind for me.

1) Distance is important and you want to be close. Watch your aiming reticle. If it is red, you are doing max damage. Unlike Monster Hunter, I don't believe you can be too close. If the reticle is white but you're still at mid range, you can do OK damage but it's like half max. If you're doing single digits you are too far and there is no point in attacking.

2) When reloading, get close enough to basically touch the monster. Your reload animation changes a bit and it looks like you are sucking aether mist into your guns. This "empowers" them, increasing your damage further and modifying the effects of your two specials moves.

You want to be doing both these things basically all the time. If you see an opening where you'd run in and take a swip playing melee, roll in and reload then back off a bit while shooting. Hanging around tails can be great for getting some distance and still getting power reloads.

I'm pretty extravagant with my rolls playing repeaters. They aren't as stamina hungry as some other weapons for attacks.

Lots of tips around reddit, here's one example: https://i.redd.it/686bts2a5w031.png

Ahh thanks for catching that! I edited and corrected the post. Thanks

I played sword primarily for the first 10ish Slayer levels. Then decided to give the pistols a try again (the low level pistols with no upgrades are downright rotten) and fell head over heals in love!

Not having to worry about stamina at all and being able to hyper focus part damage is my favourite aspect of their play. I’ll still break out the sword in the Boreus fight (the adds take forever to kill with pistols) and some of the faster Behemoths are tricky with the pistol too.

Working on getting a +5 Hellion set (and Gnasher boots) for those sweet molten drops. Hellion is a fairly trivial fight with full level frost pistols.

Thanks for the tips, StrayTanooki, that's helpful. And of course I should have realized that I could benefit from looking up the Dauntless subreddit.

Playing last night, I decided to just throw them $5 to get the new arrival pack they're promoting and the platinum needed to buy into the fancy tier of the Battle Pass. I find it worryingly satisfying to see those previously closed off boxes all available to me now. I continue to worry about whether I'm just responding to all the Skinner boxiness of the game rather than the gameplay itself, but I'm going to go with it for a bit and see what happens. I've already figured out a few systems I hadn't understood previously and am enjoying it more than I had been, so that's good!

I don't normally support free-to-play games with in-app purchases. Mainly because I try to avoid them like the plague, but if they do catch me, I usually end up dropping them in a week or two at the most anyway. The streamlined gameplay and loot progression of Dauntless makes it far more enjoyable (to me) than any of the Monster Hunter series. I'm enjoying myself so much right now, I'm seriously considering the Elite Pass.

Enjoyment levels aside, I've been playing on both PS4 (base model) and PC and there are a few things I have noticed.

1.) Graphics: Even though my mid-level gaming laptop is now about 6 years old, frame rates are higher and significantly more stable with max settings on my laptop. Textures on PS4 are also very jagged compared to my (again old, mid-level) laptop. PS4 also seems to suffer from something from something I will call "mirage syndrome". There's probably a word for it already, but basically the display seems to shimmy just a little, similar to a heat mirage rising off of hot pavement. It's also possible this is due to #2...

2.) Network Lag & Stability: PS4 currently seems to be suffering from some lag issues and talking to other PS4 players, I'm not the only one that has noticed it. This is what led to me jumping over to my laptop (that I barely use for gaming anymore unless I'm traveling) for the majority of the weekend. It seemed a little better when I jumped back on PS4 last night, so I have faith it just needs some time to get ironed out.

3.) Controller vs Keyboard: I'm not a fan of the PS4 controller layout and unless I missed it, there's no way to change it. I think having sprint bound to the right trigger was the worst offender, but I'm not a fan of the placement of the dodge and emote/flare gun either. I haven't sat down to think about how I would do it, but there's got to be a more intuitive layout. I prefer the convenience and comfort of the controller, but right now mouse and keyboard gets the win.

Edit: almost forgot - on PS4, jump and the pickup button are mapped to the same button. Really annoying when I go to pick something up and I end up jumping right over it. With keyboard, it’s very easy to pick items up on the run.

One last note: at some point in the past several years, I created a second Epic account not knowing I already had one; I somehow managed to correctly link my PS4 to the older one that was apparently used with the Dauntless Beta, but it doesn't seem like there's a way to link a single Dauntless Beta account on both console and PC. I ended up creating a second account to play on PC after a fellow Goojer - I think it was Psycotoaster - suggested playing there would eliminate the lag issues I was having on PS4 Friday night. So, now I have two Dauntless accounts (and two Epic accounts) and would prefer to use my Dauntless Beta account for both systems. For that matter, a way to merge my Epic accounts and/or change usernames would be nice as well, but at least I only have Dauntless and one other game on the older of my two Epic accounts.

Edit: Final note, for now at least, I'm playing PC under the Epic username "vypre001" and PS4 as "vypre".

I made it to level 7 over the weekend. It's definitely a very stripped down version of Monster Hunter, but so far, I'm enjoying it on its own terms. Given that I've been hearing Dauntless described as arcade Monster Hunter, the combat is meatier than I was expecting. The heavier weapons feel like they have real heft to them, and the sounds from hitting a behemoth convey that well.

I've tried the sword, repeaters, and axe so far. I found the sword and repeaters to be a bit too straightforward for my liking, but the axe has some interesting nuance to it. It has both moving and stationary charge attacks, so it feels a bit like a combination of hammer and great sword in Monster Hunter. I'm looking forward to trying out the hammer soon. It sounds like the one I'm going to like the most.

Could I get a guild invite? mrlogical on both epic and xbox.

I would like an invite to the guild, please.

BassaballJones on Epic

Thank you in advance.

I would also like an invite. I am bobbywatson100 on Epic. Probably won't be able to play until next week at the earliest though.

All caught up on guild invites.

Raise your hand if you ask for and didn’t get one.
