2019 - 12 Month Pile Program

walterqchocobo wrote:

I needed a shorter non-RPG to play after finishing up Rainbow Skies and Kingdom Hearts recently. The choice was between Tomb Raider and God of War...and I think that I chose poorly. So far, this isn't a bad game but it isn't very good either. Can't tell what is missing but it is just blah. Hoping that it improves soon. I'm behind but will start Trails of Cold Steel and try to catch up with the JRPG club.

For me, it felt like a step backwards from Rise of the Tomb Raider in a number of ways, the first being the emphasis on darkness and cringey violence. Playing them back-to-back-to-back, Rise actually is the least dark in tone and visuals of all three games, indicating that the Crystal Dynamics development team took player feedback into account. There's far less cringe-inducing death scenes (that, or it is simply harder to die as Lara) in Rise, and the story and setting largely feels more positive. Eidos Montreal, on the other hand, decided we needed to tell Lara's darkest story yet, which is only really "darkest" for one story segment where she's carrying the "trust-every-word-the-lying-antagonist-says" brand idiot ball.

A lot of people applaud it for giving different levels of difficulty for combat, exploration, and puzzles, but I found that some of the balance issues I had would not have been fixed by this. Shadow of the Tomb Raider has, I think, the best stealth mechanics in the series, but something about the regular shooting mechanics feels off in comparison, and eventually you'll find yourself in scenarios where you have to engage without stealth. Sure, I can knock combat to easy, but then all the stealth segments that were balanced just right are now going to be too easy for me. Do I just knock the combat back and forth as needed? Is that really a proper fix?

But that's part of the issue. Shadow of the Tomb Raider decided "we're just going to have more of everything" when the real, core fun of Tomb Raider is in the exploration and tomb raiding. Rise was starting to move in that direction. I think Square Enix should have honestly let Tomb Raider sit and wait until Crystal Dynamics was willing to pick it up again rather than rush a sequel about by a group of developers that didn't understand the franchise's strengths.

Oh, and they probably shouldn't have gotten rid of Rhianna Pratchett, either.

Spoiler:

Persona 5 (PS4): Finish, and platinum, the game.
Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel: Finish Chapter 3 and Chapter 4.
Super Mario 3D Land: Complete the game.

Anything else is gravy.

So far, my biggest complaint with Shadow of the Tomb Raider is exactly the same as it was with the previous two from Crystal Dynamics: the game doesn't stop talking long enough to let the exploration and tomb raiding really breathe. Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider didn't let off the gab train until late in the game, and so far Shadow of the Tomb Raider seems on that same course. No one cares about this absurd Trinity storyline! Stop. Talking.

Just finished Banner Saga and came to the realization I need to focus on smaller games. As much as I love Red Dead 2 and AC Odyssey, I’ve put maybe 10 hours into each and felt very unfulfilled. Beating smaller titles feels great.

That can definitely help. I had this phase where I only played games shorter than 5 hours. Really helped to get rid of some of the Pile.

I've spent the past couple weeks evaluating my media consumption habits and their effect on my mental health. Part of that has been looking at my gaming pile, and reviewing whether or not having such a thing is more a hindrance than a help to me.

Having a pile makes for this looming obligation in my mind that causes stress and anxiety. With the advent of streaming platforms making the idea of a pile increasingly irrelevant, reviewing this has been in the cards for a while anyway.

I've already been pretty arbitrary about what games go on the "official" pile. I might get a free game from PS+, Epic Game Store, etc, but I was only adding them to the pile if they were something I definitely wanted to play. I think I'm going to change that, and only have items on the pile that I've deliberately purchased. I'd still like to get my money's worth out of those. Or at least that's the mindset I'm going to try to have.

Having said that, this month saw me finish Red Dead Redemption 2 and Dawn of War 2: Retribution. I bought the latter years ago, and it felt good to finally check it off the list. With those, and the other changes mentioned above, the new pile now looks like this:

PC

  • American Truck Simulator
  • Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
  • Else Heart.Break()
  • King's Bounty: Crossworlds
  • King's Bounty: The Legend
  • KOTOR II
  • Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII
  • Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition
  • Watch Dogs 2
  • Yakuza 0

Hey look, no more PS4 pile!

I don't expect to clear any more off this month, so I'll carry that into next month.

Not going to make any progress tonight so here we go

May Report

Added:
Stardew Valley (Switch) (gift card purchase)
Rime (Epic) (freebie)
Obduction (GOG) (freebie)

Beat:
Persona 5 (PS4)

Made Progress In:
Stardew Valley (Switch)
Banjo Tooie (X360)

Planned Games To Beat In 2019

Spoiler:

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4)
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (3DS)
Banjo Tooie (X360)
Persona 5 (PS4)
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (PS4)
The Witness (Steam)
God of War 2018 (PS4)
Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4)
The Witcher 3 - Blood and Wine DLC (PS4)
Resident Evil HD remaster (PS4)
Black Mesa (Steam)
Firewatch (Steam)
Paper Mario: Color Splash (Wii U)
Star Fox Zero (Wii U)
Star Fox Guard (Wii U)
Subnautica (Steam)

I'm not doing so well on making progress with my planned games to beat in 2019. Almost half way through the year and I've only striked off two games. Two games. I blame Persona 5.

Historically, June has been the worst month for the pile for me. Between my birthday, e3 sales, Sony's "Days of Play" sales and steam sales, I usually rack up a lot of new games. I've been tossing around the idea of picking up Spiderman in a week when it goes on sale but then I remember that I bought God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn last year during the Days of Play sales. I've put an hour into God of War and Horizon is in plastic wrap still.. so yeah. I am going to try my hardest to not bite on any of these deals.

Instead, I think I will finally close the books on Banjo Tooie. I only need to collect 8 more jiggies before I can take on the final boss so I just need to hang on a little longer. Then I might finally get to the Blood & Wine DLC in Witcher 3 since I'll probably be going to Salt Lake Gaming Con later in the month and the English va for Geralt will be there.

Not finishing anything today, so let's begin the tally.

GAMES COMPLETED:

  • Final Fantasy IX
  • Resident Evil 6
  • A Plague Tale: Innocence

GAMES PLAYED:

  • Final Fantasy XV
  • Caligula Effect: Overdose
  • Time Spinner
  • Space Hulk: Death Wing
Spoiler: The Rambley-Wambley

So Time Spinner and Space Hulk were more like "dabbling" than proper "playing". A week ago I was feeling the need for something a bit more action-based, or so I thought, and ended up purchasing Death Wing on sale, Titanfall 2 digitally so I no longer had to swap discs out, and Time Spinner because Google told me no Switch port was planned even though it was evidently promised to Kickstarter backers that chose a 3DS code when originally backing. So, on one hand, you can all thank me for the announcement it got for Switch. On the other hand, I wish I had known.

Anywho, otherwise, I beat the majority of games I was working on this month with Caligula Effect: Overdose being my new focus. Getting closer to its conclusion, and hoping to finish it soon.

Final Fantasy IX was good to finally complete, though I didn't do much in the way of grinding or optional content so I could finish recording and get down to making a video. The script has largely been the easiest I've ever worked on, but life stuff has interfered. To spoil my conclusions: FF9 is far from my favorite of the franchise, but it is certainly something special and stands out from its brethren. I very much understand the favor it receives from many. I feel like it could provide a baseline for an even better version of a traditional RPG or Final Fantasy, but no one seems interested in adapting and improving its systems.

Also: God bless the older JRPG's and their 30-40 minute average dungeon length. God how I miss those days.

Resident Evil 6 was an interesting experience to return to with my pal Nolan, but holy Hell was it also a disaster of a game. There were elements I began to look back on favorably, but it's kind of like remembering the rare instances of good times on a vacation that was otherwise plagued with disaster. Be it flat tires on the road, a broken air conditioner, bugs in the hotel room, throwing up in the theme park, those all get forgotten in favor of that one cool ride or something. Going back to play RE6 I began to wonder what I was thinking, no, no this game is just dumb and bad. Leon's campaign is especially an awful first choice, to be frank, but it may simply be that the "upgrades" you unlock make the other campaigns seem more manageable by comparison.

The real treat of May was A Plague Tale: Innocence, which is probably going to end up near the top of my list for GotY. Probably won't surpass DMC5 or RE2 given it has some frustrating design choices in the final cluster of chapters, particularly in how it tries to handle some boss fights. However, all of the positive elements of the game far, far outshine its flaws. It lacks the same sort of replayability the other two games have, but I still hope to return to this for the story, as well as giving it a try without the HUD.

A Plague Tale is basically my "Hellblade" of 2019, so far.

Don't know what's gonna happen in June other than pushing to finish up Caligula Effect. I've got two-thirds of the month before Judgment hits, meaning PS4 time is fair game to anything. I'll probably start putting some serious time into Monster Hunter World again, or trying to at least. I should also be able to start recording the next video's footage, which currently is planned to be Darksiders because I must let everyone in the world know I apparently love awful games. If not that, then Halo: Combat Evolved.

Ugh, what happened to this month.
Replayed Dragon Age 2, played more Grim Dawn, and currently replaying Pillars of Eternity 2.

But for the pile:
Finished: Nothing

Added:
Walking Dead: Final Season
Hades
Subnautica: Below Zero

Well, two of those are not even released, so considering them pile games might be a bit of a stretch. But they will get there some day.

Had a running start to the month, but then tripped on a rock about halfway through.

Finished:
Astro Bot Rescue Missions
Crow
Batman VR
Eve Valkyrie
Drunken Bar Fight
Gorogoa
Eagle Flight

Added:
My Time in Portia (pc)
Everybody's Golf VR (psVR)
Statik (psVR)
One Piece Grand Cruise (psVR)
Drunken Bar Fight (psVR)
Catch and Release (psVR)
Trials Rising (ps4)
Batman VR (psVR)
Raw Data (psVR)
Thumper (psVR)

Had a pretty strong start at the beginning of the month, finished a bunch of games was feeling good about it. Then towards the end, my gaming time just fell off a cliff and what free time I had end up spending with other activities.

Time for the May report. I'm not going to finish anything tonight.

Backloggery is at 15, not too shabby. The spending is under control, so that's good. I'm not progressing as much as I would like, simply because the days are long, and I sometimes have no energy in the evenings. Even in the weekends when I'm childfree, I'm usually at the hospital, the gym or cleaning. Or at a coffee shop writing. Still. I'm glad. I'm on the road to recovery. Gone are the days of buying bundle of games I had zero interest in, just because they're popular (I'm looking at you Grand Theft Auto).

Only two games finished in May:

  • Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
  • Dark Souls II

I did sink a bunch of time into a few other games (Darkest Dungeon, Dead Cells, and Dauntless—I'm apparently legally obligated to only play games that start with D) but didn't finish any of them.

I spent some time looking at my collection and the games I've played and finished versus the ones I haven't touched or only played for a session or two. I noticed a pretty clear and easy pattern: almost everything I haven't put much time into was bought on sale; almost everything I played through was bought at or very near full price.

I mean, it's not exactly an earth shattering revelation, and I can easily see two reasons for the correlation. One, I've invested more in the games I didn't buy on sale, so I put more effort into them. Or two, I was more excited about them to begin with, such that I didn't wait for a sale to get them. Whatever the root reason, the next step seems obvious: stop buying games on sale.

It feels a bit contrary to the way the hobby is going these days (and especially the deals-focused bent of this community), but I think I'd be better off not participating in sales at all. I wouldn't be surprised if I came out on top in my budget, either. It seems I'm wasting most of what I spend on sales.

It's going to be tough to stick to this with the inevitable wave of E3 discounts and sales, but I'm going to try to hold to it.

Played:
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Trails of Cold Steel (Vita)

I'm pretty far behind on Trails of Cold Steel but should be able to catch up soon as I have to be near the end of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. This is a perfect title as this one is a shadow of the earlier games. Still no planned purchases on the horizon so wallet is pretty safe.

The corollary to that - only buy games I want to play right now - has worked well for me the past year.

beanman101283 wrote:

My problem with that rule is that I have a particular talent for convincing myself that this game or that one is what I want to play right now.

But somehow that assessment gets a lot more accurate when something isn't currently discounted.

I feel like there's also the matter of full-priced game purchases are often done when the game releases, meaning you can budget your game time around that. That's largely how I tend to operate these days, and it's actually been working decently for me (with the exception of getting a tad back-logged on the Switch). Sales just pop up, however, so those games tend to be a matter of "when I next have some free time".

It's nice to have those "when I have some free time" games, as Yakuza 0 and Kiwami turned out to be for me this year. However, it's not often I have time for such games, and I really wanted to play Yakuza at some point. Like, it wasn't a mild interest, it was a "this looks so up my alley I need to give it a whirl". Most of the games I buy on sale aren't like that, and chances are they aren't for others either (unless they've done what a lot on GWJ have and purchase games exclusively on sale and never at launch).

I wonder if I should try an experiment and try to remember what I have wishlisted on PSN and Switch eShop. If I couldn't remember a game without checking the list, it gets removed from the wishlist. Right now, I know I keep waiting for Danganronpa 1+2 to go on a decent sale, but given that I want to play that enough to remember its on my wishlist, it indicates I actually want to play the game enough that it would be worth it at full price. Meanwhile, I know I have over 20 games on my PSN wishlist, but aside from some other Yakuza games and The Silver Case I don't really know what's on there.

I don't remember anything on my Switch eShop wishlist except maybe repurchasing Pokken Tournament.

So while sales and wishlists aren't so bad, regularly cleaning them out might be better in determining which games you missed that you really want to make time for.

I wonder if I should try an experiment and try to remember what I have wishlisted on PSN and Switch eShop.

Hmm. That's a really interesting idea. I should try that.

I sometimes put a games into shopping cart and wait till the end of the sale, if I remember about them I get them otherwise I must have not cared enough about them.

Mmaayyyy Report!

Wow so uh may just came and went. Dungeon Warfare was lovely but 2 hasn't been as good. The pressure of the devs saying play it on hard or do the harder objectives isn't as much fun. I played by getting three stars and then go onto the next stage.

The 3Ds was played a bit more while the Switch stayed home. Dragon Quest 7 has been fun.

Unfortunately mobile videos dominated my short attention span so that lowered the actual progress made.

Hey all.

There's no point in even cutting and pasting my old report and tweaking as usual.

The only thing I've played on screen in May has been an hour or two total of Nintendoland with the boy.

I've played board games, some mp, some solo, I've crafted PnP games, somehow I've accidentally started painting minis again after 20 years away, this time round with my son.

So I'm still gaming, just not digitally. This hasn't been a conscious choice to hack it back to near zero, it's just happened. Been a bit weird tbh, I won't try to explain because it's tricky to do that, but think my bipolar has something to with it. Not in a particularly negative way, it just is what it is.

I am feeling a lil hankering to play edging in slightly right now though, even if just a good mobile game or something.

Sometimes moods just shift in a way. There are times I'll be gaming constantly and suddenly switch over to watching film or anime more instead. People crave change, and it seems you've awakened some dormant passions that now feel fresh again.

Nothing strange, complex, or even wrong about that.

This is me very much. When I was young I would mistake my phases as permanent changes and think I was done with whatever I lost interest in. Now I know I’m likely to cycle back to it.

Finished:
Blackwell Unbound (iOS)

Also Played:
Final Fantasy XIV
Super Mario 3 (NES Classic)
Spider-Man (PS4)

I got back into FFXIV big time this month. As a result, I’m at level cap with a job (WHM) and caught up on the story for the first time ever, even though I created my character before the first expansion came out.

Clock, I realized something similar yesterday. I have a bunch of NES games on my backlog. Some, I played when they were current, but didn’t finish them; some, I bought at used game stores (in my 20s) because I remembered reading about them in Nintendo Power and thinking they looked cool. I think I got an SNES the summer after 4th grade, which should tell you how old these games were at the time I bought them. I didn’t play these used games when I bought them, and dipping my toe into them yesterday for backlog purposes, I realized I didn’t really want to play them at all. In the abstract: sure, I want to play and finish all my things. But time is limited and there are other, newer games I’d enjoy more—and plenty other games on my backlog. I don’t think I’d ever choose these old games over something else.

This got me thinking back to the CRPG Club. I convinced myself I was going to play DA:O and Arcanum, but stalled out of both. I had played DA:O before and had some nostalgia for it; not so Arcanum. I stalled out of DA:O about 10 hours in, and stalled out of Arcanum almost immediately. Just couldn’t tolerate the jankiness and poor UI. I liked the idea of playing these classic RPGs that everyone talked about, but again, I wouldn’t actually choose them over something else.

Trying to work on my backlog has definitely shown me that I should not be holding onto something that I thought would be fun when I was younger, playing a different generation of games. And that I need to adjust my expectations now so that I don’t clutter up my gaming experience with stuff that won’t actually interest me.

What to do when in a gaming (video) slump? Oh yeah, buy a Switch!

To be fair it's only because the Wii U I bought for the boy at Christmas has gradually become more knackered last few months to the point it was 50/50 if a game would work or not. Still under warranty with the shop but no replacements in stock so a full refund was received. Son was more than a little crestfallen so rather than getting another used Wii U, we took the refund and traded the games etc to upgrade to a Switch. He soon perked up!

The boy has Mario Odyssey and I treated myself to Steamworld Quest.

Redownloaded Stardew Valley and Darkest Dungeon from back when had a Switch for a few weeks about 18 months ago.

Just got the winning ebay bid on Mario Rabbids strategy game for a tenner, a lot cheaper than when I was looking at getting it 18 months or so ago.

This time can't have any retail guilt really because it didn't cost that much and it's more for the boy, but have a feeling will have me back on the gaming train too!

Oh no. Oh no..... I don't think I've finished a single game this month.....

***insert panic gif***

Time just disappears, but at least it's a better month than the previous.
Three games played that were actually on my pile.

Finished:
Walking Dead: Final Season - aw, so good. Telltales' games will be missed, even if the company will not.
Momodora Reverie Under the Moonlight
Spyro 1 Reignited

Played:
Terraforming Mars
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane - game 1
Darkest Dungeon - doubt I'll finish it, feels so grindy.

Bought:
Walking Dead: Final Season
Outer Wilds
Subnautica Below Zero
Hades
Crash Team Racing

June Report: hey it’s my birth month. Another month of no games finished. It’s okay. I’ve been jamming on old games (snes/gba/etc).

I’ve got one bright thing to report. I’m further in Mother 3 than I’ve ever been. I got back a member who joined a band and now searching for a special egg.

Played: Tactics Ogre Let us cling together.
Mother 3: Between work and jamming toward on battles.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
Time Spinner: Very Castlevania. Not too much variety in the combat. Pretty though.
Blood stained: Iga vania is a Castlevania game.
My Friend Pedro: Your cool 00s game with bullet time.
My Monster Prom: Not going to proms with anybody.

Not much else to say other than the family is going on a long vacation and will probably need to bring the 3ds or Vita along.

Speaking of not beating any games in June...

Played:

Mostly Persona 5.

Beat:

Zilch

Added:

The Sinking City (PS4)
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (PS4)

Drakengard 3 (PS3)
Peggle 2 (PS4)
Overlord: Fellowship of Evil (PS4)
Ray Gigant (PSVita)

I've been a bad, bad boy... but when am I not? It wasn't for lack of trying to beat something. P5 just happens to be hefty and my job has been very demanding for the past few weeks. Here's to July giving me the time to actually get some games beat!
