The big news is Cross-Platform play! (oh and no battle pass but i'll believe it when i see it)

It will also be on Blizzard's Battle.net app like CoD4 was.

I'm, uh, assuming that PC/console cross-platform is only for the co-op stuff. Otherwise yikes.

For those wondering in a previous thread if the developers would feel they needed to do something in the "No Russian" vein... this game apparently has a playable child soldier scene? Sort of? Or at least it's definitely a scene with a child picking up weapons and killing people if not a "child soldier" in the sense the term usually brings to mind.

Some interesting other stuff in there about the game punishing you if you choose to kill civilians. Anyway, at least we know it has a campaign!

It would be sloppy of them to do it only that way. They're also making it so you can level up regardless of mode you play, and if they make it xplay across the board they'll always have a single constant pool of players. They move away from the issues they've had with the past versions which was platform populations dying off and leaving people stranded who would otherwise keep playing.

Competitive PC/console cross-platform is not viable. Full stop.

Right and the competitive scene has been PS4 for years. Don't think that will change.

Regular play where it doesn't matter as much... Beenox and IW have had half a decade to work the problem. We'll have to see where they land with it.

When I say "competitive" I don't mean organized eSports. I mean players shooting at each other as opposed to co-op with players on the same team shooting at AI. You cannot successfully do PC/console cross-platform in those game modes. The fundamentals have not changed since Microsoft tried this with Halo 2. There is no "working the problem" of one side having infinitely more precise controls in a game which revolves around aiming. They can either let the console players get waffle-stomped, in which case they obviously won't be happy, or give the console players auto-aim so strong its functionally equivalent to an aimbot, in which case the PC players won't be happy.

someone told me or i read it on Reddit that similar games that have co op have a way to detect input so we console players arent getting slaughtered by the mouse and keyboard folk. that seems logical and easy to impliment.

needless to say. i sent the video to some old COD 4 and MW2 fireteam mates. the excitement was palpable. so i think we're all gonna get it and find ways for all the dads to slip away for male bonding online shooting time.

With them using Blizzard/Beenox as their infrastructure base it changes what was possible before and at a minimum we'll be seeing what Fortnite is doing and have console folks make a choice to join pc folks. I won't be surprised if they just toss everyone into the same pool. It's a potential for more money for them and what the CoD community has been asking for.

FYI the Sony exclusivity deal will still be in effect sadly, but still only 7 days.

It's official. Everyone against everyone and the lobbies are Fortnite style.

Seems like i was right about how they will do the cross play. Input vs same input.
From a Reddit post in R/Games

If it's just putting all the KBM players in one bucket and all the controller players in one bucket than I don't even consider that cross platform as far as PC/console becuase all but a tiny fraction of PC players will be on KBM and all but a tiny fraction of console players will be on controller... Functionally it's still keeping the PC and console players separate 99% of the time. It's nice that the console people aren't segregated though.

i get what your saying. i suppose skill could be a better way to cross play. unsure how balanced that would be with controller vs KBM. but yes...be nice to game with some xbox folk . some work folk have xbox and if they buy itll be nice to have some water cooler game talk

As a person new-ish to Fortnite given my son’s interest and play, I can confirm the hilarity associated with running into mostly K/M players as a console player. The speed with which their Razer Nagas build forts at the click of one (out of 12) buttons is horrifying while you’re just struggling to aim and build one ramp. The entirety of the “last zone” meta - the rapid building and moving to the open circle - is completely off limits for console players, unless they’re robots of some order.

I do not want to play against K/M players on console in any shooter, ever.

I'm..... curious, but also kind of disappointed. I really like CoD4, but I never got into the multiplayer. I loved its campaign and the story they told, and MW2 went off the rails immediately (albeit in fun ways). I just... can't have faith that they'll do a story even half as decent, relying more on shock value than anything else.

Most of all: not buying this until the microtransactions come out. With BLOPS 4, they held out on microtransactions until all the positive reviews were out, then struck you with red dot sights. Don't trust what they'll do with Modern Warfare.

They've done this since microtransactions were a thing. Last year was exceptionally heart breaking because on the announcement stage they came out and said no battle pass. 3 months later they announce their plans for the battle pass. End of the day it comes down to what Activision wants. Which is always scary.

They're saying no battle pass this time around too, but the wording is better. No 'traditional' battle pass. So it'll be something onerous i'm sure.

Infinity Ward on new engine

This has actually got me interested in COD this year, that old engine was cracking at the seams. Some really cool stuff under the hood. The blog is very technical in parts but its really sounding like some very cool tech.

In particular the parts about the authenticity of certain pieces of equipment like older night vision goggles or 70's/80's era weapons having sh*tty, grainy imaging vs the modern era high tech stuff having higher res, no image distortion etc.

They really seem to be getting down into the nitty gritty details with the quality & authenticity of this new engine.

The darker more realistic tone is also a welcome change, I do wonder if their new engine will make enemy A.I a bit more engaging. Design wise it would be great if didn't just feel like that room to room or area to area shooting galleries, it doesn't have to be Dishonored but a little shift in that direction would be nice, it would open combat up a lot. I'll be keeping a close eye on Modern Warfare coming upto its October 25th release.

To hype the announcement of the full MP reveal at Aug 1st they had a sneak peak of a new mode called Gun Fight. 2v2 RB6 style. Looked fun.

raw gameplay footage without the silly talk of the players...

So gunfight is 2 v 2 survival? My palms are sweaty thinking of it.

GrandSlamSingle wrote:

better to think of it as 2v2 RB6 siege or CS:GO

https://blog.activision.com/call-of-...

Gunsmithing is a robust weapon customization option for your two main Loadout weapons: Each Primary and Secondary Weapon can be augmented to give you the precise type and style of firepower you require for any type of multiplayer game mode. You can customize up to five parts of each weapon, until your available slots are filled. With Assault rifles, for example, you usually have nine areas of the weapon to augment: The Muzzle, Lasers, Optic, Stock, Rear Grip, Magazine, Underbarrel, Barrel, or a Perk. Choose wisely.

Good point!!! I'll probably treat this mode like I did with Destiny Trials. Dabble once or twice, see I am outclassed, and never touch again

kill streaks are back...

Yup domination is gonna be a bunch of people with those tanks rushing or locking down a point.

Goodie /s

Some highlights.

Multiple modes with different sizes
6v6
10v10
20v20
2v2

Maps are asymmetrical like old school MW games.

No mini map without gaining them with kill streaks.

Kill streaks are back.

Night versions of maps will randomly show up.

Claymores are back.

Perks are tied to your gun.

Ghost perk is always active when attached.

100 health

Heal over time is back.

30-70 attachments are available for the guns.

Guns can have up to 5 attachments on them.

Attachments have pluses and/or negatives to them.

No more pick 10.

Gunsmith and altering your build can be done mid match. Don't have to wait between matches to change things up.

Hardcore is called Realism mode and there's 0 UI. Not even hit markers.

Operators are cosmetics. No abilities tied to them.

Open Beta Sept 12th.

They should have never gone beyond the first 3 in CoD4. That was fine, it was when MW2 came along with a million of the damn things that the problems really started.

Streaks themselves i have no problem with, but the behaviors they perpetuate in objective games i find annoying. You get people who won't help with the objectives trying to get the +1s to their streak and lose the match.
